The Japan Preview: 9/25/11 Edition (Dark Souls, DQC wk 2) - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 25 September 2011 / 10,500 Views

Software sales remained strong in Japan this week as Dragon Quest Collection held up pretty well while Dark Souls opened at over 250,000 units, well ahead of what preorders had suggested last week.

1) Dark Souls (PS3) - 260,000

2) Dragon Quest Collection (Wii) - 83,000

3) Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Tag Force 6 (PSP) - 63,000

4) Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3) - 59,000

5) Busou Shinki: Battle Masters Mk. 2 (PSP) - 36,000

6) Senran Kagura: Shoujotachi no Shinei (3DS) - 34,000

7) Tales of Xillia (PS3) - 22,000

8) To Heart 2 Plus DX (PS3) - 20,000

9) Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS3) - 19,000

10) Gears of War 3 (X360) - 15,000

11) Monster Hunter Portable 3 Best (PS3) - 14,000

12) Rhythm Heaven Wii (Wii) - 13,000

14) Shadow of the Damned HD (PS3) - 12,000

14) Resident Evil: Revival Selection (PS3) - 12,000

15) Pokemon Scramble (3DS) - 11,000

In addition to the games above, Kirby (DS), Wii Sports Resort (Wii), Ocarina of Time (3DS), Grand Knights History (PSP), and Minna no Golf 5 (PS3) should also chart in the final top twenty data for the week.

Dark Souls opened very similarly to Dragon Quest Collection this week. It will be interesting to see if the Dark Souls drop next week ends up similar to the Dragon Quest drop this week. The worst case scenario would be the Tales of Xillia drop, which was essentially ~500k-->~50k-->~20k. With a 90% drop next week Dark Souls would struggle to reach even the 350,000 Dragon Quest Collection has gotten to already. I'm expecting the Dark Souls week two drop to be between Xillia and Collection next week.

The other notable datapoint for the week is Gears of War 3, which is down quite a bit from Gears of War 2. Given X360 has been selling 900 - 1100 units per week in Japan lately though, the figure looks right.

Going forward, there aren't too many big games in the near future. Final Fantasy Type-0 launches in October, during the deadest period of the Japanese market and should top 200,000 units in its launch week (possibly 300,000). The next AKB1 game for PSP does release in two weeks and should sell around 200,000 units week one as well. Otherwise - not much is highly preordered for late September or October. The big mover in the last week has been Monster Hunter for 3DS, the game went from zero preorders (as it was not official yet) to about 40,000 preorders. 3DS figures should begin accelerating pretty dramatically as major titles like Monster Hunter, Mario, Mario Kart, and the Dragon Quest Slime begin arriving from November onward. October doesn't look too strong though. Frogger 3DS in October could be a surprise long term hit even with a slow opening of say 20,000 units, as its been one of the top titles on WiiWare for close to a year in some markets due to its ongoing popularity with both men and women (based on the US Nintendo Channel).

With such an amazing first week, whether Dark Souls outsell Demon's Souls LT doesn't matter at all (it sure will though as it only needs 40k). 260,000 copies at full price already made them a very comfortable amount of money that Demon's Souls, despite great legs, couldn't generate. And we are only talking about Japan here.

Also I don't think we should be comparing Dark Souls to Dragon Quest, since DQ is a huge established franchise. Instead, look at Demon's Souls in Japan which only sold 300k LTD. Dark Souls s is definately going to expand the fanbase of that stlye RPG.

I totally see the connection between Dark Souls and Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection, Jacob. I mean, Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to a game that sold 300k in Japan. Dragon Quest sells Millions upon Millions of units in Japan. It's amazing that Dark Souls on PS3 can manage to match Dragon Quest!

I am glad to see the success although would have been even happier if it was still a PS3 exclusive

That is a very low opening for Gears of War 3. Very low. Hmmm... I wonder.

Wasn't there a X360 version of Dark Souls lol?

And by the way I expect Type-0 to top way more than 200,000 at launch... The game leads every "most awaited" list in Japan.

MH3HD is holding too well, dammit, that is going horribly against my "frontloaded" argument. :-P
Dark Souls had a HUGE opening, that was incredibly surprising.

It's not MH3HD though lol

Just a budget re-release (so at a lower price). Much like the Nintendo Select on the Wii.

Why are Japanese video games so freaking cool?

Monster Hunter for 3DS is like the major low kick Nintendo could have landed on Sony recently.

Yea, considering Crisis Core launched at ~500K FW in Japan, I would think Type O is very likely to at least past 400K. Too bad they didn't have a limited edition HW bundle, that would have skyrocketed sales even higher.

And was Dark Souls only released on the PS3 in Japan or was there just no interest in that version? If it is the latter, I think the 360 version has a similar fate in most regions.

Boutros thismeintiel (on 26 September 2011)

Dark Souls is exclusive to the PS3 in Japan. I think the 360 version could have done 15k-20k.

  • 0
thismeintiel thismeintiel (on 26 September 2011)

I guess in Japan it could have done okay. But I still think that it won't fare too well in the other regions.

The X360 version already has well over 60k preorders in the Americas.

Niiice Demon's Souls 2...er... I mean Dark souls. I wonder what sort of HW boost we're looking at with Dark Souls. Nothing like Xillia, but should be good for a 10K boost. Good kick off for Ico/Shadow.

Also that Monster Hunter game you have there is simply a re-release of the PSP version (the Best version). So it's not for the PS3 but for the PSP.
