The Japan Preview: 5/29/11 Edition (One Piece 3DS, new games) - News

Preliminary data for the May 29 week shows that Japanese software is finally starting to rebound after several very slow weeks. The 3DS, Wii and PS3 each had titles open fairly well this week, even though once again not a single title topped 100,000 units, the usual standard for a first place title in Japan. One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP for 3DS appears to have opened well enough to lift older 3DS software as well, which tends to indicate a sizable hardware bump. In recent years One Piece games have proven pretty popular - One Piece: Gigant Battle has sold over 300,000 copies on the original DS in Japan since launching last September - so the lift does make sense.
Based on the preliminary data, the top 15 games for the week were:
1) One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP (3DS) - 86,000 (possibly much higher if there are shortages in the store where the sample is based - 3DS games from weeks ago had sizable lifts)
2) Troy Musou (PS3) - 40,000
3) Pandora's Tower (Wii) - 28,000
4) Akiba's Trip (PS3) - 16,000
5) Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional (DS) - 15,000
7) Nobunaga no Yabou: Tendou with Power-Up Kit (PS3) - 13,000
7) Nintendogs + Cats (3DS) - 13,000
9) Professor Layton & The Mask of Miracle (3DS) - 11,000
9) Ridge Racer 3D (3DS) - 11,000
11) Treasure Report (DS) - 10,000
11) Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (3DS) - 10,000
13) Winning Eleven 3D Edition (3DS) - 8,000
13) Pokemon Black / White (DS) - 8,000
14) Patapon 3 (PSP) - 7,000
15) Gungnir: Mayari no Gunshin to Eiyuu Sensou (PSP) - 6,000
In addition to the games above, Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 (PS3), Wii Party (Wii), Steel Diver (3DS), Dead or Alive: Dimension (3DS), and Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2011 (PSP) likely cracked the top 20 as well.
Japanese software sales should slowly increase over the next few weeks as the next Yakuza (PS3), Resident Evil (3DS), Tales (3DS), and Zelda (3DS) games arrive throughout June. Yakzua: The End looks like it will open stronger than Yakuza 4, possibly topping 400,000 units week one, and then drop off more quickly when it releases June 9th. None of the 3DS games listed above should open nearly that well, but each is more likely to top 100,000 units in Japan than not lifetime. Barring a surprisingly good opening for one of the upcoming 3DS games, Yakuza still looks like the only 100k+ opening for another five weeks or so in Japan as preorders are pretty low for all other games. That could change a bit at E3, some announced or unannounced titles could get mid to late June release dates, but more likely than not, Japan's video game industry is set to generally see fairly quiet weeks through the end of June.

All the 3DS needs now is Pokémon, Mario 2D (or Mario Kart), Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter, or at least one of these games.
The sales for Pandoras Tower are great and theyre just for three days or release.
If Japan is 3DS stronger region then 3DS is dead ;) And don't count too much on shortages.
I hope to see 3DS sales jump above the PSP this week. About time it's sales jumped and Japan is it's strongest region.

Sigh.... Bad sales for Dead or Alive Dimensions. I guess Japanese people doesn't like fighting game on handheld. Hope 3DS gonna rebound soon. One Piece on 3DS looks awesome, hope they also release it in NA.
Ok Japan listen. Dead or Alive was released last week with only 28,000 in sales. Are you telling me that you prefer a game based on a manga that doesn't know how to end that one of the best fighthing games this year?
7 out of 10 are Nintendo released games, haven't seen that in a while.
Will VGC JPN Preview finally be correct and a 3DS title emerges at #1?! With One Piece I believe it finally will.
One Piece is currently the top selling Manga in Japan. I would expect videogame knock offs would sell a bunch.
I also think Pandora's Tower will be lower. I originally predicted 15k but it could do 20k I suppose.
