Sony Confirms 150m PS2s Shipped Worldwide Through January 2011 - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 14 February 2011 / 4,423 ViewsSony has just confirmed that 150m PS2s have shipped ("sell in" to retail) worldwide through January 2011 (149.7m of which were through December 2010), as VGC previously tallied. With shipments of about 300,000 PS2s in early 2011, PS2 shipments should reach nearly 151m by the end of March 2011.
From the March 2000 launch in Japan through December 2010, Sony has also confirmed software shipments of 1.52b games. Sony says the system has seen 10,828 game releases to date. A quick look at Sony and Nintendo records suggests this is far more games than NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, GB, GBA, DS, PS1, PS3, or PSP have seen to date.
Regarding the ongoing sales of PS2, Sony says "Despite almost entering its 12th year since launch, PlayStation 2 system continues to serve as the entertainment centerpiece in many living rooms and is strongly supported in countries and regions, particularly in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and South America." This is clearly true, as PS2 sales in Western Europe (0.5m), the USA (0.7m), Canada, Japan, and Australia fell to under 2 million units combined in 2010 while Sony shipped over three times that amount worldwide. With many of the above regions seeing steady economic growth on liberal economic reforms, there are potentially tens of millions of new video game customers in the areas Sony lists. The open question is when Sony will saturate these areas - as there are only 115m or so PS2s shipped to date between the USA, Canada, Western Europe, Japan and Australia - which puts PS2 at 35m in developing regions already.

In terms of longevity PS2 is in the front among the other best sellers, no wonder since it is cheap and as a big legacy of cheaper games with much quality still. Go PS2!

Sega's poor management decisions killed the Dreamcast quicker than the PS2 ever could, though it did lend a hand. But when are you Sega fans going to let it go. Does it really eat at you that bad?
10k8 releases not games I think, othewise it would mean 2.5 games/day !
Ah, the cancerous machine that killed the almighty Dreamcast, the greaest console ever devised. I pity whoever owns one of these DVD players.
what? 10.000 games??? prrrr
The Volkswagen Beetle of gaming consoles. Keeps running and running and running and...
Am i missing something here? 10,828 games???. According to wikipedia there's 2015 games for PS2 and 1150 for DS. What exactly is sony counting? The different region versions? NTSC: JAP/USA/ASIA & PAL EU etc. That would probably make up those numbers. "Sony says the system has seen 10,828 game releases to date"....releases not game titles. Are they daft?
Not surprising. I'm from developimg country and most of my friends has PS2.
whoa thats alot of games ds is second and only has 2000 games
Of the 10828 games I probbaly got a chance to play less than 1%...
Well PS1 did get close to a billion. Also the ps1 as well as many older nintendo systems have had many digital sales this generation upping many of there numbers although still far from the 1.52 billion.
Best console ever. DS will pass it in total sales, but won't come close in software sales.
Holy shit 10,800 games!! no one can even come close to touching that.
