Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Details and Screenshots

by Chris Arnone, posted on 10 January 2011

My new issue of Game Informer hasn't shown up yet, but apparently Badass Panda got theirs in the mail, allowing them to lay a whole slew of information and a handful of screenshots of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on the rest of the world. So Elder Scrolls fans, hold on to your broadswords and try not to get the keyboard sticky.

  • The new engine being built will include dynamic snowfall, shadows, and greater environmental detail.
  • There will be five "massive" cities and there will be more to do in them like blacksmithing, farming, and cooking.
  • There will be five schools of magic: Destruction, Alteration, Conjuration, Restoration, and Illusion. Mysticism has been removed and Enchantment will be a skill.
  • There will be 18 skills, down from 21 in Oblivion, these skills can be tailored to the type of character you wish to play.
  • Skyrim will have perks like Fallout.
  • Quests will be more dynamic with some being randomly generated and other being tailored to your play style.

Oh, I said something about screenshots, right? Here you go:

kafar said: "i'm glad the level cap is finally gone. but the level scaling is just a bad idea. they should abandon this. it's like you got punished by lvling up. bad for RPG." Why is it a bad idea? It has already been released that the enemy won't scale, so that makes the Skyrim easier. The game will have perks and level similar to Fallout 3, which was real easy, even on the highest difficulty. I don't want the game to be to be a cakewalk.

Naum said: "So we won't be punished with harder mobs if we level? I hated that in Oblivion that's why I couldn't finish the game" I honestly didn't have a problem with that since it made you think strategy when dealing with certain enemies. After I got so high, they became pretty easy to kill anyway. On the flip side of your complaint, the enemies could only be so strong when you reached a certain level. IIRC, when you reached level 25 or 26, that was the max your enemies would be for the rest of the game, though you could actually make it to a level somewhere in the mid-50s. In the case for Skyrim, they just made the game much easier to play, right along the lines of Fallout 3. In any case, I am stoked for this game as I absolutely loved Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I believe they can build a great game. Even if Oblivion was slightly disappointing to me. I just wish that, for once, we could journey to the southern part of the empire. Five games in and we still haven't been to the home of the Bosmers, the Kajiits or the Argonians.

"http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/01/10/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-combat-levelling-and-quest-details-revealed/" Awesome! Enemy leveling was one of the few flaws of Oblivion, I'm glad thats gone. Not sure what Fallout's level system is like though.

@Icyedge The world does level with you, however details say it's more like fallouts world leveling which was a lot better imo. Source: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/01/10/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-combat-levelling-and-quest-details-revealed/

scat398 (on 10 January 2011)

nice improvement on the graphics end (not that I minded oblivions look). I don't mind the loss of mysticism as I rarely used it as a magician but I'm sure there are those out there that enjoyed the specialty. I also like the addition of perks I think it will add to the experience.

Icyedge (on 10 January 2011)

Wow, awesome screen. I just hope everything isnt level based like in oblivion.

Chevinator123 (on 10 January 2011)

Loving all info coming out about this game.

yo_john117 (on 10 January 2011)

Some pretty decent graphical updates.....and its about time.

reidlosdog (on 10 January 2011)

@routsounmanman Alright, well if you used all 21 skills, good for you, but I personally never used all of them myself. And if your not going to get excited about blacksmithing, cooking, and farming, then poo on you good sir, poo on you. You must have obviously ignored the graphics of the dragon and werewolf on the screen shots if you loved the buggyness of morrowind

chingrin (on 10 January 2011)

@routsounmanman. I personally loved oblivion and it's what is making me look towards skyrim with anticipation.

Chairman-Mao (on 10 January 2011)

Looks good, can't wait.

routsounmanman (on 10 January 2011)

Each iteration gets thinner, shallower and more casual... I really hope Bethesda doesn't pull another Oblivion this time... God I miss Morrowind... >_>

MARCUSDJACKSON (on 10 January 2011)

looking forward to it

ManusJustus (on 10 January 2011)

YES!!!
