Black Ops Set to Outsell Medal of Honor at Least 4 to 1 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 15 October 2010 / 11,363 Views

Few games have caused as much of a stir recently as the new Medal of Honor title, released on October 12th in the Americas by Electronic Arts. From the inclusion of the Taliban as playable characters and then their subsequent removal, to inevitable comparisons with the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops and Electronic Arts stating that the title needs to sell at least 3 million units for a sequel to be considered, a lot is riding on the performance of the game.

Preliminary day one sales are in and Medal of Honor sold around 500,000 units in the Americas across Xbox360, PS3 and PC with Xbox 360 taking around 60% of sales. Week one sales should swell to around 700,000 in the Americas and around 1.1 million when adding sales for EMEAA (Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Asia). This would bring the game in just under expectations, although 3 million sales by the end of December should be possible given strong holiday sales. It would also bring the game in well under pre-order figures tracked by VGChartz, suggesting that many may have cancelled pre-orders after playing the beta version or have maybe been turned off the game following the Taliban controversy.

In comparison, VGChartz expects week one sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops to come in just below Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at around 6 million units across all platforms (based on current pre-order rates), doubling to 12-14 million by the end of the year (or around four times the sales of Medal of Honor).

ioi, nobody expected great sales from this game. The people who expected more then a poor performance are non FPS gamers. MoH is has been, their engine is not set up for the gamers of today, 90% of gamers don't care for the clunky controls and gameplay. Its the same for Killzone and Battlefield. People want fast paced games and easy kills.

Did anyone expect different? I'll be totally honest, this games just looks like a budget Call of Duty to me. I seems to lack the flair and all round punch that COD has.

I'm disappointed with the game.. I haven't tried the single player campaign yet but it's supposedly only 4 hours long.. Both Battlefield and Call of Duty are light years ahead of MoH..

the only reason this game sold well was because of the E3 hype. This is an average game, rented it yesterday and played for abotu 3-4 hours before getting rid of it. The only good news is that there will be a lot of pre-owned copies so EA won't make too much moeny back.

MoH was given a fair review, unlike MW2.

Black ops will help kotick grow his devil horns and release horror onto the gaming world.

Currently 75 on Metacritic. Yeah, this will have no legs at all. I'm astonished by its sales either way. I mean the product is mediocre and the franchise has zero brand power in 2010. It defies all logic, really.

Movement in the beta felt clumsy and snipers were a horrible problem. Also, gameplay wasn't very original. However, core gameplay was pretty good and if I some day hear they've fixed the movement and sniper issues, I might actually get the game.

After playing Medal of Honor it's totally deserved.
Even though Black Ops is not made by Infinity Ward.

@mchaza
how did it disappoint you if you haven't played it?

oh and MOH is one of my big disappointments of 2010 the fact is the Single Player being nothing around what it was hyped for cause me to cancel while i was ahead (couldn't return game) and pre order BO. Split screen online was the sealer for BO

BO might beat MW2 and it should since BO looks like a MUCH MUCH better game (good job treyarch)

But the hype around MW2 was massive so it wont sell as much as 20 million but expect around 15-17 million life time since Cod titles have a small lifetime of around 6-8 months.

Well... I think this is a good bet.

I can imagine Black Ops hitting the 20 Million mark by the end of 2011, and about 5 Million for all MoH versions combined sounds about right.
