Keiji Inafune Hates His Job, Wants to Retire Early

by Nicholas Taylor, posted on 12 October 2010 / 2,602 Views

In a recent interview, Keiji Inafune, best known for being heavily involved in the Mega Man series, as well as being the man behind both the Onimusha and Dead Rising series, revealed that he pretty much hates his job.

In the interview, he talks about the impossible, doing the impossible, and how that makes game developers grow as people. After talking about all the challenges of game development, the interviewer said that it seems like he loves his job, to which he replied, "It's the opposite. I hate it! I want to retire early and take it easy."

He went on to explain the reason he's working so hard now, saying that if you enjoy your work, you can take it slow. He says that he could do just a small bit of the work on a game like Dead Rising and get paid a high salary.

"There are loads of creators like that," he explains. "But I'm not like that. If things are difficult while they are doing it, they can become a leader and a creator."

Apparently, Inafune is pretty tired of the industry in general, since his own job isn't the only one he's hating, given his vocal opinion on the Japanese gaming industry that he voiced a few weeks back.

I aagre with Edrigo!

edrigo (on 13 October 2010)

cool dude

hagelt18 (on 13 October 2010)

@edrigo Yeah man...it's clear you don't really get what I'm saying. I'm done.

edrigo (on 13 October 2010)

u say i'm going off topic then u randomly throw in celebrities? dev's like u're god-like miyamoto are celebrities so is andy warhol (who is an artist) and yes you can judge them on both levels. Why did i mention kotick? Why because u could just look at him as a hard working person but once he enters the public dommain making random statement's to press and such he is looking for a reaction, so is inafune they go hand in hand with what i'm saying. Lots of artist can be dickheads so can celebrities, so when i make comments on this page it is just as a direct result of my passion for gaming. Also i find quite ironic that u ask me to respect someone who shows no respect to his own peers in the industry. My comments might not agree with u but many people on vgchartz have voiced there annoyance with this man. Lastly no matter how great someone is they can still be a douchebag. Anyway i buy loads of games from different dev's or "artist's "as u put it. Do i have to like them as people? no, can i be offended by stupid comments that they don't have to make, sure! because i'm passionate in my gaming it's why we both have been going to and fro on this message board. Unfortunately looks like we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

hagelt18 (on 13 October 2010)

Whoa man...I think you are getting carried away when you start talking about completely unrelated things. What he said was wrong...but who really cares? Why don't you judge these people as artists and not like celebrities? If you really want to treat him like a celebrity, feel free to hate him for his personal opinions. But as an artist, he deserves to be judged as an artist. An artist is judged by his work, not his character. When it comes to video game developers, I want artists (broad definition of art)...not charismatic figures. This man is an artist, and I appreciate the work he has done for us. I'm not even sure why you brought up Kotick, he isn't a game developer. I could care less about Kotick. Furthermore, at this point you've completely deviated from the subject of this article. Post your rantings about his opinions of japanese games elsewhere. This is about him being worn out developing games.

edrigo (on 13 October 2010)

fine then i won't boo him but he is talking crap nonetheless and he's feeding this notion that games coming from japan aren't up to par with the west i think maybe he should be looking at capcom and not others... wait u know what? i will boo him because to be so disrespectful at tgs when i personally feel that what the japanese are serving up for next year is looking amazing is diabolical. Feeding western gamer's beliefs that western games are "better" than japanese dev's actually hurts the industry so no i'm not being feral and yes u are condoning wat he's saying. Is wat what he says ok to u because he made games u appreciate? if he can disrespect his fellow proffesionals is that somone u respect? forget i asked that. Why don't u kiss some kotick ass while u're at it ? He works hard too maybe u can clap hands for the next time he says bungie are the only good dev making good games.

hagelt18 (on 13 October 2010)

@edrigo I just clearly stated that I don't condone what he says nor do I enjoy it. Just to repeat myself again, I do not think it is worth hating him for. If you can be appreciative and respectful towards someone who has contributed as much as he has over the years then suddenly turn on them like a feral cat after they said a few spiteful things, then your level of appreciation for developers is very shallow. Again, you don't have to kiss his feet...but you don't have to throw tomatoes either as soon as you notice he isn't kissing yours. He's already stated that he's on his way out, I don't think he deserves "boos" on his exit just because he's made a personal choice.

edrigo (on 13 October 2010)

@helgelt 18 watever u feel towards this dude is u're own story. What i see is a jaded man with nothing left to give the games industry so why doesn't he just chill out? why don't u just chill out? I've been enjoying my gaming despite random comments from inafune and u.This west devs vs east devs is b.s and guys from capcom have been kissing western gamer ass for a long time and i dn't appreciate seeing peeps just agreeing with this guy(cause of watever childhood memories u have). Hideo Kojima is my idol but if he came out talking crap like this i won't appreciate it cause i'm not a sheep.

hagelt18 (on 13 October 2010)

@edrigo You don't have to be sympathetic...but you don't have to be disrespectful towards him and unappreciative of what he has given to us over the years. What have you done for us? You are useless compared to him. All you do is bitch about him bitching. At least he is making games while he is bitching. I'm not condoning the way he is acting and what he is saying. I just don't think its worth hating him for and forgetting all the good he has done just because he's lost it in his late years.

edrigo (on 13 October 2010)

@ hagult 18 i would be sympathetic to the man if this was his first comment but he doesn't shut up! If he is feeling tired and overworked so what?? most of us work hard but we know this thing called PROFESSIANLISM slagging off a whole industry just because he feels like a used condom, oh and get's paid is not getting any respect from me. What about other japanese dev's that make awesome games? Do they not work hard? Do they feel a need to bitch and complain? they also have every right to complain but they don't , cause life can be unfair sometimes it's no use acting like a baby about it! i also disagree on his view's on the japanese industry just look at games like demon souls.

Aiddon (on 13 October 2010)

Get out Inafune; your stupid, bitter comments about the Japanese gaming industry are nothing short of ignorant and dare I say even racist. Ya also might wanna explain why Nintendo is still kicking everyone's ass across all creation with their games. This attitude of his is pathetic and spineless.

Random Person B (on 13 October 2010)

gah what about the megaman crisis, bridging X and classic megaman. Don't retire until then :'(

NoirSon (on 13 October 2010)

Damn what did Capcom do to that guy? His games showed so much promise and life and now look at him...

Metal Man (on 13 October 2010)

I sure hope he doesn't retire early. Maybe he just needs some time off or something. All I can say is that 2 of the best games I've played from this gen were produced by Inafune. Those being Mega Man 9 and 10, of course.

JOKA_ (on 13 October 2010)

As someone who is getting into the industry, I love what Inafune is doing. Hes being candid. And its not coming from a higher up like Kotick, its coming from someone who has been in the game for a long time and knows how things are run from the most basic level.

hagelt18 (on 12 October 2010)

I think the people bitching should try their hand at game development...its not a walk in the park. You can't expect every famous game developer to be as resilient as the god-like Miyamoto. Ordinary mortals can get burned out working on this sort of thing. As for his past comments that are completely unrelated to this article...sure maybe he was confused and maybe he was overstating himself. But who isn't a little confused in this generation of gaming? The industry and the community have changed a lot over the last few years...maybe too much. It has left me and my stubborn grip on the happy days of the past baffled. Most of the time I'm convinced that I hate all of you, but in reality I probably only hate most of you. The only thing I know for sure in all of this is that I still love games and I appreciate anyone who has contributed their efforts to the game industry.

thedaftman (on 12 October 2010)

are you guys kidding? This guy is mad for the right reasons there are plenty of people who hate their jobs and he just voicing his reason give him a break its not like he releases crap games geez

Severance (on 12 October 2010)

Meh , i don't care atleast if he leaves , a better person might take over and make games for the sake of making them, not for the sake of kissing the western audience's behind.

edrigo (on 12 October 2010)

why should they? Japanese dev's are in a rock and a hard place, damned if u do damned if u don't. would u have said that western dev's a few years ago should have made their games more japanese because they were more financialy successful. Japanese devs will not be able to make up this ground now western developers have devoted resource's and marketing to capture a larger audienc eg mw2. look at last gaurdian and tell me it's inferior in graphics or anything else. Capcom love's kissing western gamers asses anyway so listening to this guy is not advisable.

chocoloco (on 12 October 2010)

Its good to see that many of the Japanese are seeing that they truly are making games that are behind the West. And just a few examples of good Japanese games does not change the fact that most of the games do not appeal to Western audiences.

edrigo (on 12 October 2010)

This dude pisses me off like nobody's business he needs to leave. there are plenty of great title's japanese dev's have put out and will put out this year and next. He totally crapped on everything at tgs (i bet he was involved in turning dmc over to western dev's cause he's lazy). If it's too hot for u get out the ktchen. I have zero respect for him and kotick two of the biggest douche bags in gaming at the moment.

mjk45 (on 12 October 2010)

i think he means is adversity and struggle can lead to creativity and leadership blossoming and for some people to be at there creative best they need that in there work, so on one hand you push yourself to gain that creative energy but on the other it can make you burn out and no longer love your work

Rawnchie14 (on 12 October 2010)

@ darthdevidem01 He explained why he hates his job. He feels he's overpayed and that the game developement business is broken and choppy, especially the Japanese market. He mentioned how he gets paid the big bucks to do virtually nothing but dabble his input. If that's true then I can see why he'd criticize the game development world. The weight lifters and obnoxious deadlines given to them and they get paid dirt while guys with "reputations" and "track-records" are paid for doing little to nothing? It's as if they're encouraging him NOT to work. That'd drive anyone with a passion crazy. Please oh please, listen to the whole thing. The guy's pessimistic for a reason. Would you seriously be all smiles if the world around you was crumbling into mediocrity? Because honestly, best games this gen are coming from the west this time around.

darthdevidem01 (on 12 October 2010)

Well just go away then. your horribly negative, misleading, in-congruent, silly, horrible, hurtful, insensitive, unthoughtful, disrespectful and even racist comments about the Japanese industry is not gonna help anyone Please go, your best franchise creation can live without you.....k thnx BYE!

westplay (on 12 October 2010)

@Ninpanda I agree! Make a new Megaman X 16-bit game first!

priteshmodi (on 12 October 2010)

@Xbbjf9s Join the club. Onimusha Warlords/Genma Onimusha is perhaps the best Japanese made game I've (implying this is my opinion) ever played next to Pokemon Red/Blue.

66jzmstr (on 12 October 2010)

He has a few valid points (namely the state of the Japanese game industry), but overall his perspective is entirely off-putting. "If you enjoy your work, you can take it slow.. " WTF?! I love my job, but I really have to scramble some days. This man should seriously considering moving out of Japan if he honestly believes in those quoted words.

Xbbjf9s (on 12 October 2010)

so no onimusha then? I'm heartbroken.

Spedfrom (on 12 October 2010)

Get lost then. You've been nothing more than an annoyance, spewing nonsense all too frequently.

Ninpanda (on 12 October 2010)

Don't you dare even think about retiring, until you make me a new, 16-bit Mega Man X! Frankly, I don't give a damn what you do after that.
