As Black Friday - one of the single biggest retail days of the year - signals the start of the holiday season in the US, VGChartz takes a look at who the big winners were.

As with 2008, the biggest winner on Black Friday was Nintendo. According to our preliminary data, Nintendo sold nearly 800,000 Wii units and 850,000 DS units in the Americas during the week ending 28th November - pretty much exactly the same as last year. The biggest-selling software for the week was New Super Mario Bros Wii, which we estimate sold well over half a million units in the second week of release. Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, Mario Kart Wii and most of the other big Nintendo and big casual third party titles on Wii and DS saw huge boosts. **Edit** with more data coming in, Wii looks a little lower than last year - more like 750,000 units.

Sony had mixed fortunes this year. PS3 sold nearly 400,000 units during the week - around twice as many as last year and significantly ahead of Xbox 360. On the other hand, PSP sales were down over 35% year on year and PS2 was down over 25%. All holiday bundles were sold out countrywide, and while PS3 software sales in general were lower than Wii and Xbox360, top performers included all bundled titles (inFamous, Batman: Arkham Asylum, LittleBigPlanet, God of War Collection and Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time) along with Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed II. Edit - with more data coming in, it looks like PS3 could actually be as high as 450,000 for the week once all is said and done. **Edit 2** - with even more data coming in, PS3 is actually closer to 500,000 units for the week.

And lastly Microsoft had a solid week but down on last year. Around 325,000 Xbox 360s were sold, down over 35% on last year's record-breaking Black Friday for Microsoft. Most retailer-specific bundles sold well and the big software for the week was predictably Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2.

http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/photo/gallery/091127/GAL-09Nov27-3195/media/PHO-09Nov27-190153.jpg

Overall, around 2.6 million units of hardware were sold in total during the week compared to around 2.8 million last year and 2.0 million in 2007. Stay tuned for more news and finalised figures when we have them.

"VGC has a tendency to overtrack and undertrack hardware..." OReallLlLlLyyYyYy....? I thought VGC was the know all, end all, all seeing, all knowing console tracking extrodinaire.....!!! Imperfect they are..???? You don't say.....

XanderZane (on 01 December 2009)

VGC has a tendency to overtrack and undertrack hardware, so we'll wait for the official numbers from each company. It's seems all 3 consoles sold pretty well. PS3 will be higher due to the price drop, but come next year I don't think their sales will be any higher then XBox 360. Like the Wii is doing, they will all even off at some point.

LinKing12 (on 01 December 2009)

The new update says 550k for the Wii in another article here on vgchartz, 440k for the PS3, and the record-breaking 1,000,000+ for the DS systems. MS has yet to release data.

Buzzi (on 01 December 2009)

The article is not updated with Nintendo's data? Or those 750k are counting all the week/Canada & Mexico?

CGI-Quality (on 01 December 2009)

@ Jlmadyson lol.....dude, what's your deal? VG Chartz tracks more than just NA in their America numbers. In total, the console probably did do 500,000 in all, with 440,000 of it in NA alone.

ethomaz (on 01 December 2009)

VGC estimate numbes was... PS3 - OK 360 - OK Wii - Overtracked Petty accurate.

HelloMotto (on 01 December 2009)

vgchartz always tend to overtrack wii numbers

shams (on 01 December 2009)

Slightly odd that the other figures are so right, and the Wii figure is so wrong.

Euphoria14 (on 30 November 2009)

@jlmadyson These numbers are most likely US only, VGChartz numbers are for US+CAN+Mexico. Other than the Wii numbers possibly VGChartz looks to be spot on.

Jlmadyson (on 30 November 2009)

440k. I knew Chartz was wrong.

CaptDS9E (on 30 November 2009)

From Venture Beat "Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said in a statement, "The 2009 holiday season got off to an amazing start for PlayStation, with all key retailers showing a significant increase for PS3, PSP and key holiday titles over Black Friday and the holiday weekend. PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09."

Jlmadyson (on 30 November 2009)

Greeenberg said more than 2 times and they said this; Meanwhile, Microsoft said it sold twice as many Xbox 360 consoles during Thanksgiving week compared to the week before. Spokesman David Dennis said that Microsoft’s console sales took off a couple of weeks ago on two fronts. First, retailers began selling bundles of the company’s Xbox 360 Arcade — the lowest priced unit at $199 — with cards that gave $100 worth of game downloads for free on Xbox Live Arcade. Also, the $399 Xbox 360 Elite model based on the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 game also sold like hotcakes starting on Nov. 10. Microsoft cut the price of its mainstay console by $100 on Aug. 27, but retailers have been aggressively bundling games with the consoles. On Black Friday, for instance, Best Buy bundled the most expensive consoles with a total of six free games. But 500k on the PS3 for the week. I think not.

Jlmadyson (on 30 November 2009)

Nearly 500k for the week. Yea, uh no.

kunaixhaku (on 30 November 2009)

walmart also gave the xbox 360 arcade for $149

Avinash_Tyagi (on 30 November 2009)

@tedsteriscool: Wii still outsold it

kunaixhaku (on 30 November 2009)

canada had a $279 xbox 360 elite with 5 games (only good game fable 2) xbox 360 arcade for $149 and there was nothing for the ps3...and a free hat with the wii...bestbuy and futureshop were the only ones to do anything special in terms of gaming...and as for software deals were pretty similar to the states for ex: left 4 dead 2 for $39.99 dragon age origins for $39.99 fight night round 4 for $29.99 god of war hd pack for $29.99 and such...a lot of these and i believe walmart or toysrus gave 2 games for free with the ds and psp prob had a small discount to it.

kunaixhaku (on 30 November 2009)

canada's deals were mostly for xbox 360 and we had no special bundles as u.s. this is just the intro to black friday this year i have a feeling next year expect some greater numbers from canada as bestbuy and futureshop go mad with sales which are coming up shortly on boxing day.

libellule (on 30 November 2009)

""Aaron Greenberg from MS just posted this on twitter "Great #BlackFriday results just in, biggest sales week of the year for #Xbox360, more than 2xs previous week sales" "" this could fit with the datas 2x146k < 325k I stil this n

Euphoria14 (on 30 November 2009)

We will find out once ioi gets back.

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

@Euphoria - Maybe... actually Canada has deals like BF too for the consumers not invade the US borders.

Euphoria14 (on 30 November 2009)

Then Canada and Mexico won't account for the usual 10-15% they normally would. It would actually be lower this week if I'm not mistaken.

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

Ohhh yeah... Canada and Mexico don't have Black Friday but have some deals.

Gearbox (on 30 November 2009)

@Euphoria14 - no they dont

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

@Euphoria ioi said "These are Americas numbers" in first page of comments.

CaptDS9E (on 30 November 2009)

Aaron Greenberg from MS just posted this on twitter "Great #BlackFriday results just in, biggest sales week of the year for #Xbox360, more than 2xs previous week sales"

Euphoria14 (on 30 November 2009)

@Ethomaz I am completely ignorant here, but do they have Black Friday in Canada and Mexico?

tedsteriscool (on 30 November 2009)

PS3 basically teabagged Wii.

dsage01 (on 30 November 2009)

WOW Ps3 sales are way up high from last year. last year =238k this year= 500k. Good job Sony!

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

So... VGC reports near 650k for US only. Difference of only 100k, this is not much. VGC is petty accurate.

AE101 (on 30 November 2009)

@ethomaz Canada+Mexico are 10%. 10% is not 200k.

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

@GianCarmen, VGC reports America and this is estimate yet.

GianCarmen (on 30 November 2009)

That could also mean that the PS3 and Xbox 360 could be down much lower, then what vgchartz is reporting.

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

@AE101 550k from Nintendo is US only, 750k from VGC is America (US + Canada).

GianCarmen (on 30 November 2009)

Looks like vgchartz was off on the Wii by 200,000.

AE101 (on 30 November 2009)

http://www.gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=106083 Looks like Wii didn't do so well.

milkyjoe (on 30 November 2009)

LOL, only in the mind of a Sony gamer could a smaller number somehow be better than a bigger number when it comes to sales.

Ail (on 30 November 2009)

@ Avinash. No bundles maybe, but haven't you been telling us for month how NSMBWii will boost sales like mad ? So it's not like the Wii didn't have anything going for it either...

Euphoria14 (on 30 November 2009)

Very impressive Wii sales, but am I wrong when I see that it is down YOY after a price cut? None the less, still stellar sales. Don't know what to say about PS3 sales. It is less than 100k away from tripling last year's sales. O_o

atma998 (on 30 November 2009)

@Colonel-Killzone What are you talking about with your Wii sold at 100$. Can you provide us a link please?

Colonel-Killzone (on 30 November 2009)

wait hold on moondeep they had some deals with mario brothers if you buy a wii you get half off of the game also they were selling wii around nyc for 100 dollars around here so idk where your getting your info from they may not have had bundles but they had there own way of getting the wii sold

Colonel-Killzone (on 30 November 2009)

RageBot (on 30 November 2009)

@psfanboy: Domed man, DOMED, yes I know, it is really similar, but there's a difference.

leo-j (on 30 November 2009)

So estimates say: Wii: 750K PS3: 500K 360: 325K IN THE U.S......o-o

psfanboy (on 30 November 2009)

holy....shit...@ ps3 sales... ... i thought the systeem whas doomed?

moondeep (on 30 November 2009)

The Wii sales are most impressive. As has been said already, the Wii had no major bundles to incentivize folks. When you figure in the individual price of the PS3/Xbox360 bundles items, those consoles were selling for around the same $200 as the Wii, and yet the Wii sold the same number of units as the HD twins combined. Impressive!

Tallgeese101 (on 30 November 2009)

my god thats an ugly bunch.

Avinash_Tyagi (on 30 November 2009)

PS3 sales boosted quite nicely by rather impressive bundles Wii sales are extremely impressive considering it had no special deals or bundles

Xoj (on 30 November 2009)

Xiao, "does them" it main driver selller was wii fit.

CommonMan (on 30 November 2009)

@Carl- I lol'ed. And I'm at work, got some funny, funny looks. :-)

kunaixhaku (on 30 November 2009)

ps3 at 500k is amazing without any $199 sku this is the rebirth of the playstation brand

arcane_chaos (on 30 November 2009)

holy sh*t! PS3 FTW!!!!

Gilgamesh (on 30 November 2009)

Daaaamnyum The biggest week the PS3 had in America was it's launch week, and it sold 234K, the PS3 is going to double that and then some for Black Friday!

Carl2291 (on 30 November 2009)

*fap*

BHR-3 (on 30 November 2009)

If it comes in at 500k+ that will be more than the 360 did last BF 470k and the PS3 didnt even need a 200$ price tag to do it thats very impressive wait till PS3 goes to 200$ for even more sales EXPLOSIONS

CommonMan (on 30 November 2009)

And there was much fapping. . .

Carl2291 (on 30 November 2009)

Holy shit, PS3 at 500k. wow!

XiaoMay (on 30 November 2009)

The title should read : "with it s 50$ worth sku's still selling huge at 200$ Nintendo does ut again"

Metallicube (on 30 November 2009)

Should be interesting to see the potential Wii sales in the first holiday season when shortages are no longer an issue..

GameAnalyser (on 30 November 2009)

I am convinced that it's not a superior h/w that sells off but somethin that's worth buying!! ps3 just adds itself now along with the successful contendors.

Skeeuk (on 30 November 2009)

i predict 600k ps3 sold when all is settled.

huaxiong90 (on 30 November 2009)

They just have to rely on their first party and Natal, it seems.

huaxiong90 (on 30 November 2009)

@r505Matt and bardicverse: What core exclusives can they take from Sony that can turn the tides? -GT5 and GoWIII are both 1st party exclusives. -Final Fantasy Versus XIII is plausible, but Tetsuya Nomura seems to favor the PlayStation given his PR history (AND he's apparently taking advantage of the PS3's offerings). -Agent IP seems to be locked down as an exclusive from what Sony said at E3 (and they've said before in 2007 that Rockstar is working on an exclusive PS IP that is NOT L.A. Noire).

Gamerace (on 30 November 2009)

LOL. 'OMG PS3 sold 2/3rds of what Wii, did what a WINNER!' Don't get me wrong, it's a great result for Sony comparitively but back in '06 nobody but nobody ever thought they'd be saying that with euthusiasm.

r505Matt (on 30 November 2009)

Picked up the last Slim bundle at my Gamestop (LBP is AWESOME). I don't understand why people put supreme emphasis on change of sales versus overall sales. The Wii is still THE big winner with a 33% (or 50%) difference versus the PS3. That is a HUGE gap. And it's not like comparing apples to orange, it's a comparison between 2 video game console systems. None of this 'well the PS3 is HD and the Wii is Casual'. Nintendo Wins. Xbox 360 bundles were weak, and I agree with bardic, M$ needs to pull in some more high quality exclusives or they will fall behind. Or Natal needs to be awesome.

gustave154 (on 30 November 2009)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW unbelievable sales for the PS3..... First the awesome september sales now this??? The PS3 is back!!! B_E_L_I_E_V_E

bardicverse (on 30 November 2009)

Looks like the last nail is in the coffin, Wii has locked down another Christmas holiday competiton. Pretty impressive considering the rather lackluster year they had for 09. With a new Zelda due out for holiday season 2010, they'll have an even easier time next year. Looks like PS3 pricecut definitely influenced people to grab a PS3 over a 360 this year. MS needs to steal more "core" exclusives from Sony in order to keep their 2nd place position in lockdown. Even in hard times, this generation is definitely the Wii generation.

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

@LinKing12 Wii sell near 750k is normal and down compared the last year. PS3 sell near 500k is amazing and more than 2x the last year. This is not fanboy-ism. Wii = normal PS3 = Big Winner For the Wii to be a winner should have sold more than last year.

darthdevidem01 (on 30 November 2009)

MY GOD my PS3......its grown up!

--OkeyDokey-- (on 30 November 2009)

PS3... ;_; *sheds tear*

LinKing12 (on 30 November 2009)

Nintendo is compeletly owning the video game business. Let's not forget sales of the DS along with the Wii. Saying that PS3 is the big winner is obviously fanboy-ism. The facts are clear; Nintendo sold the most, a huge margin above the rest. The CEOs at Nintendo are no more disappointed than I would be if I owned Nintendo and sold nearly 1.6 million pieces of hardware in one sitting. Don't get me wrong, PS3 did great. But second best don't cut it, bub. ;)

Pharaoh (on 30 November 2009)

It seems this picture is used every black friday.

maximus22 (on 30 November 2009)

Wow I think every race and culture are represented in those two pictures. Haha. Nothing brings about racial harmony like saving money!

haxxiy (on 30 November 2009)

So, Wii - 750k, PS3 - 500k and X360 - 325k. That's a bit disappointing fo the Wii and good for the PS3.

fwap (on 30 November 2009)

@Makaha Thanks for your input Makaha, however you and your circle of friends do not amount to the entire 'hardcore' gaming market. Saying you would not play a Wii because of some 'stigma' that is attached to it says much more about you than it does about the console itself. I think it's a shame you would deny yourself the pleasure of playing a Wii for those reasons. As far as anecdotal evidence goes, most of my friends have a Wii and many more are looking into purchasing one. A lot of them, including myself, grew up with NES, SNES and Megadrives - the most 'hardcore' period of videogames, when you were seen as a bit of a dork for even being interested in videogames. I appreciate it's just your experience, and thanks for not being a dick to me about it, but when people look at those Wii numbers and say 'yeah but that's all grannies and 4-year-old babies' it does make my head spin in confusion. 'It doesn't matter if the average age of the Wii gamer is 29 like atma stated. Nursing homes have a Wii console for entertainment, but that hardly makes them hardcore gamers.' And for the record, it does matter if this is the average. And it matters too that the Wii is in nursing homes. There is truly an unprecendented wide-range of appeal for this console, but the 20-somethings have not been forgotten - and 2010 is going to be the biggest reminder of that.

ethomaz (on 30 November 2009)

PS3 UP 50k. Wii DOWN 50k. PS3 definitely is the big winner of BF... only 250k under Wii... it's amazing.

numonex (on 30 November 2009)

PS3 BF weekly sales in NA have gone from 400k to 450k to 500k. The PS3 sales numbers keep increasing. 360 BF weekly sales numbers are not increasing, stuck on 325k.

sully1311 (on 30 November 2009)

**Edit 2** - with even more data coming in, PS3 is actually closer to 500,000 units for the week. wtf!!!

WiiStation360 (on 30 November 2009)

At close to 500k, it looks like the PS3 might pass the 360's huge Black Friday numbers from last year. (478k)

milkyjoe (on 30 November 2009)

"holding a Wii remote, to them it's not macho" Yeah, the first thing I think about when playing a video game is whether or not I look macho.... You wouldn't happen to be American, would you? Personally, I'd say your friends have some deep rooted issues with regards to their sexuality.

z101 (on 30 November 2009)

Seems see Wii is now the Core and the Casual console. Almost all of my Xbox360/PS3-Only friends wants to buy one this christmas. Even among the pubertal "Harccore"-gamers the Wii popularity is growing fast.

jneul (on 30 November 2009)

yay go PS3 go, way to show all the haters on here that PS3 really did pull some amazing sales.

dharh (on 30 November 2009)

Ninty aint doomed. It's just boring.

11ht11 (on 29 November 2009)

lol at the girl in the second pic XD

Makaha (on 29 November 2009)

@fwap the Wii owns all, it terms of hardware sales Neither the 360 or the PS3 will ever catch the Wii in sales, end of story. However, and I know atma will jump on me for saying this, but the overwhelming majority of hardcore games are either on the 360 or PS3 in my circle of video game friends, ALL of them either play the 360 or the PS3. And they wouldn't be caught dead holding a Wii remote, to them it's not macho There's a stigma about the Wii, at least to my hardcore friends. I'm not hating, I'm just telling it like it is It doesn't matter if the average age of the Wii gamer is 29 like atma stated. Nursing homes have a Wii console for entertainment, but that hardly makes them hardcore gamers. For most harcore gamers, it's either the 360 or the PS3. For me, the Wii is a not even on my radar. The ONLY game that interests me on the Wii is MadWorld. That's it. I love cutting edge graphics, and the best graphics on consoles are either on the 360 or PS3, not the Wii So yes, the Wii dominates sales and will continue to do so, but seriously, the hardcore gamers are on the 360 and PS3

rexwong (on 29 November 2009)

GOOD JOB!! SONY!! GREAT BUNDLES, BEST console with Good Exclusive Game!

fwap (on 29 November 2009)

@htown4life Clearly you forgot my comment on the last weekly analysis... Me and 702, 184 others are apparently buying Wiis. :) The Wii is the best console available this gen! Keep up.

hYpnochronic (on 29 November 2009)

The most amazing to me is that the Wii didn't really even HAVE any bundles!

DOLBYdigital (on 29 November 2009)

Really like to see a software breakdown. Hope a bunch of the amazing but underlooked games get big bumps for all systems!! There are some true gems that are waiting to be played...

htown4life (on 29 November 2009)

Who seriously still buyin Wii's tho? This baffles me

htown4life (on 29 November 2009)

PS3 had better bundles than the 360...6 crappy games compared to the ones in the PS3 bundles...I'd buy a PS3 also if I didn't already have one...I know all the Elite consoles was gone tho

BoneyBoy (on 29 November 2009)

crazy numbers...the wii can't be touched. thot ps3 would sell more considering the bundles and tons of money sony spent advertising. i see 5-10 ps3 commercials per day. microsoft looks to be waiting for next to break out the major ads with natal. sony still in trouble tho because they are losing money while microsoft and nintendo profit

NoCtiS_NoX (on 29 November 2009)

PStriple FTW!

jneul (on 29 November 2009)

so ps3 outsold the xbox 360 in america interesting...

binary solo (on 29 November 2009)

With ~450K for the week PS3 has a pretty good chance of beating 360's 2008 WW total. It'll be close. I am astounded at the possible 36-/PS3 gap in Americas for the week. But 360's BF result was definitely dampended by a good 50K or so because of the recent Walmart deal.

RageBot (on 29 November 2009)

@Bobbuffalo: No dome, no doom ;)

Bobbuffalo (on 29 November 2009)

But I thought that Nintendo was doomed =P

Cheebee (on 29 November 2009)

Hmm, no surprises there, then. :)

Pho_Hybrid (on 29 November 2009)

ouch thats got to hurt for the 360 then again Software must be strong for it and they still make money on every 360 sold (I think)

woopah (on 29 November 2009)

ive heard worringly little about wii fit plus

lilwingman (on 29 November 2009)

ps333333 ftw.
