Sinobi: Wii Sports Resort Sells 155,000 Units Day One in Japan - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 24 June 2009 / 21,782 Views

Update:

First Day figures are in for Wii Sports Resort in Japan from Famitsu. The title has sold through 41% of its shipment, for sales of 155,000 units on day one of availability. That compares to 130,000 for Super Mario Galaxy on Day one, 176,000 for Wii Play & Wii Sports (1) during the Wii launch week, and 260,000 for Wii Fit week one (two days). Wii Music did 50,000 units day one.

Wii Sports Resort should top 300,000 units week one at a bare minimum given that the game has a few more days to sell before the week ends.

Original Piece/Prognostication:

Final preorder data for Wii Sports Resort has just arrived. The data suggests that the game has at least 125,000 preorders in Japan. Famitsu magazine analysts expected the game to have a week one shipment of 500,000 and lifetime sales of 3.5 million. Among Vgchartz expectations, Brett expects about 300,000 week one, while I have a more modest 250,000. We'll see soon enough, but it should at least be bigger than Wii Music.

For reference, all of Nintendo's Wii-line games have had strong openings in Japan. Wii Sports opened to sales of 181,000 units and will eventually reach a total more than 20x that opening in Japan. Wii Play debuted to sales of 178,000 and has sold over 15x that amount to date in Japan. Wii Fit opened to sales of 252,000 units and has reached roughly 14x that opening in Japan to date. Wii Music, the red-headed step child of this series, opened to sales of 107,000 last fall and has nearly quadrupled its total since then.

Japanese blogger Sinobi should have the day one data (June 25) for Wii Sports Resort this Friday.

Yup, by spring 2010 M+ games will be plentiful given good WSR penetration.

Well this should alleviate any developer concerns about the motion + market penetration. We should see some great games that require motion + come out thanks to these sales which is great.

Well, this really looks good for Monster Hhunter Tri.... I looked at several Japanese store online, and MH3 is the top selling Wii game, with Wii Sports Resort taking the #2 spot. These 2 games should really help the Wii regain some ground and hopefully hold on to it until New Super Mario Brothers Wii....

Anybody remember the first day figures for Animal Crossing City Folk? I´m asking because that game managed just around 300 k for the first week.

samus aran rules (on 26 June 2009)

155 k first day is I think an awesome result for this kind of game that is expected to sell with legs. I were hoping for an opening of this kind but I thought around 100 k first day was more realistic, so great !!

300k first week then maybe? Very very solid, things are looking good for Nintendo in Japan again.

its great news, Confidence has been lacking lately but looks like Nintendo is back. Overseas success is surely guaranteed after this.

Pretty good day 1 sales... now the real question is how many consoles will it move for Nintendo?

Lately the Wii has been struggling to stay ahead of the PS3 in terms of weekly hardware sales... I'd say this week's hardware numbers should be around 40k for Wii

i'm predicting it's between 220K & 250K

Wow, ha ha. People are seriously complaining about the use of a decades(centuries?) old figure of speech?

On the sales of Wii Sports Resort, the higher number seems more accurate to me since it showcases the new Motion +.

I have red hair in my beard guys, its just a figure of speech.

Looks like my first week prediction was right.
And yes, the red hair part sounds a bit... prejudiced.

''Wii Music, the red-headed step child of this series, opened to sales of 107,000 last fall and has nearly quadrupled its total since then.''

NightDragon83 says:
250-300k sounds about right to me... I think 500k is a little bit on the high side for first week sales.

Famitsu magazine said the game should have a week one "shipment" of 500k, not that it would sell 500k first week. ;-)

  • 0
Chrizum (on 25 June 2009)

I'm calling 262k first week.

I'm not expecting first week numbers to be that big, but this game will definitely have legs no doubt about it, just like all the other games with "Wii" in the title (minus Wii Music lol!)

"With preorder data in through June 24, it looks like Wii Sports Resort will be a bit hit in Japan."

a bit hit or a big hit?

I already ask my brother to buy 1 WSR while he going to Japan this week, so count me in for the first week sales. :D

I take it that Wii chess isn't part of the Wii... series then. Good HW bump for Wii in the weeks to come then?

I'm excited about WSR, but I'm unsure if I should take the plunge and buy it. I'll probably end up waiting for Red Steel 2 before I get a WM+.
