05th March 2009
VGChartz has today release preliminary first day figures for Microsoft's Xbox360 exclusive Halo Wars which released in the Americas on the 3rd March 2009.
Over 250,000 units of the title, set in the Halo universe and developed by Ensemble Studios, were sold on the first day of release including midnight launches at many retailers across the country.
Sales of Halo Wars are expected to comfortably pass one million worldwide, likely hitting 2-3 million making the title easily the most successful Xbox360 RTS game to date, with the title already having sold over 200,000 units outside of the Americas.

Stay tuned to VGChartz for week one figures to be released early next week.

Daddo Splat says: funny our local GS had a midnight launch for both KZ and this and KZ2 had 20 peeps pick it up and this only had 4 still. Iam like why the hell open for 20 or even 4 what a waste. still my son was happy to get his copy at midnight I waited to pick KZ2 the next day I was tired. ********************************************* I wouldn't get up at midnight to get either of those games. I pre-ordered both and still haven't picked them up. People complaining that the sales are low for a Halo game need to understand that this is a RTS game and not a FPS. It's quite obvious that FPS games are very popular on the XBox 360, while RTS games are not that popular on game consoles period. So the game could have Mario, FF, Killzone, Uncharted or MGS in the name and it still would have sold around the same amount. It's not the name that sells the game. It's what's in the game. Of course there are special cases like Pokemon. lol!! The fact that this game sold almost the same amount as Killzone 2 in less time, shows that KZ2 didn't sell nearly as well as it should have. Maybe the bad rep from the first game kept people from buying it.
The game is pretty fun. I'm still waiting for a starcraft 2 to come out though
"Vaux says: I don't understand why people are complaining about Brett's "On Pace" comment. Halowars: 1 day sales = 250,000 Killzone 2: 2 day sales = 350,000 I think that halowars would be equal or maybe have sold more if they had that extra day killzone 2 had." Totally agree!
Roughly? roughly give me 100000$!, roughly NOT, You can do better than this to attract xbox fanboys to this myth,,by theway every game is expected to sell over a million, in 20 years killzone 1 will surpass the million mark and Haze. Post it right or I'll be back
I don't understand why people are complaining about Brett's "On Pace" comment. Halowars: 1 day sales = 250,000 Killzone 2: 2 day sales = 350,000 I think that halowars would be equal or maybe have sold more if they had that extra day killzone 2 had.
Not bad, not bad at all. The legs will be very interesting for this game.
really good number. you know i gotta give it to MS they sure now how to attack when a big SONY game is going to be realeased. they do something always, like release a game or a bundle or announce new games so that people and press pay atention to that and not what SONY is going to release.
@mjk45 come on don't be a hater! I played with some people already online and they are as surprised as me cuz the game really rocks...and let me tell you I am not that into RTS games but this one is really nice, and online is crazy mostly when you play 3v3...and by the way the number of people playing online is only increasing so you just talked rubbish.
funny our local GS had a midnight launch for both KZ and this and KZ2 had 20 peeps pick it up and this only had 4 still. Iam like why the hell open for 20 or even 4 what a waste. still my son was happy to get his copy at midnight I waited to pick KZ2 the next day I was tired.
Damn alot of people were mislead by the commercial I guess lol...expect alot of returns and "bargain" sales in gamestop..Halo Wars $55 :p
@BMaker11 Well I've seen lots of people post that they haven't really played FPSs until Killzone 2. Then claiming it's the best without even playing any of the 360 FPSs. There are lots of niche fans on this site. RPG fans and such. I thought we were talking about the people on this site. Why did you change it up to be a general public statistic? What I just said can be translated to people on this site.
anyone else notice how they aren't showing gameplay in the televised commercials?
You got 3 mp maps for Halo 3 with a purchase of the special edition of Halo Wars. And include Halo in the title and youre bound to sell copies. But i did expect alot more from this title. This good in comparison to other RTS games, but the two previous points i made shouldve made more sales. So its just OK sales, not good and in no way great.
@pbroy But that's simply not true though lol. FPS = several million sellers. Many of which did over 4-5 million RTS = none
I'm very curious about the legs this title will have. I can't imagine them being very long as other big name rts games have already hit the console and there doesn't seem to be much of an audience. While I'm sure the Halo branding will help with that I'm not sure how much it will.
Not bad first day numbers... Hopefully it'll start a trend towards popularizing the RTS genre on the consoles.
So 150K Europe + 400K America means 550K in first week for Halo Wars. My original perdiction was 700K though. :(
Wait when I think about it, the sales have really nothing to do with Halo there was a demo out for it 2 weeks before the due date so people knew that it really doesn't have anything to do with the FPS. I think the word Halo brought it to people's attention but i don't think that's why it sold like that
Yes "Halo" is the reason it sold a lot but it's an RTS with a unique multiplayer and that's what 360 is all about. It deserves to be the most selling RTS for a console because it was made for the console unlike the rest of the console RTS's.
"It's doing super-incredibly well considering how it's an RTS!!!11111" It's called Halo. = Big sales.
@BMaker11 I was referring to your last sentence. "And many of you on VGC probably don't like RTSs that much either, so don't try and make it seem like this game "converted" you" Lets flip it a little for Killzone 2. And many of you on VGC probably don't like FPSs that much either, so don't try and make it seem like this game "converted" you"
The game ROCKS....so it was kinda expected with the Halo tagline on it's name! I've ye to play online, but the world on that is that it's a blast, so you can expect that it's going to be a hot product for a while in the online space.
I don't think just because it has Halo in the name it will do super good, otherwise we'd be seeing higher sales. People know it's not a Halo FPS so they aren't buying it right away. Like Simulacrum said, a Mario FPS probably wouldn't sell that well.
at my shop the guy said that KZ2 and halo wars had been selling pretty even ,went back a few days later and he said halo wars was the most returned game they ever had seems a lot of people wanted halo but not necessarily an rts
@pbroy I doubt KZ 2 was bought up because it had "Killzone" in the name. Nor do I think Sony will milk the franchise and make a "Killzone Wars" now that KZ2 is critically acclaimed. Really though, does anyone think this game sold this well because it's a "good console RTS" alone? Like I said before, Civilization Revolution was a great game, but didn't do nearly as well. Now if it said "Halo's" Civilization Revolution, then it'd sell
In my opinion the gameplay isn't as deep as C&C 3 but the story is tons better since I love the Halo backstory. I have a select few friends who always buy console rts games with me and none of them got the game at launch. They should be picking it up soon though. I see this game having decent legs.
Nice for just a day of sales. I was expecting much longer, but with better legs later on. I am curious to see what the numbers look like next week. Thanks, IOI. To the haters - before you comment on the game and how lacking it is, play it first - or the demo - and then report that. If you are just taking shots at it because it's a Halo game, you are just trolling.
Those with an interest in Halo lore probably bought this game for that aspect. I wanted it because I really like rts games and I heard the control approach worked better than others of the same genre on consoles. Regardless the name effect, this will help legitimize rts console games.
@ kowenicki You have to factor different accounts on the same console (I have 4 XBL accounts), rental copies, and borrowed copies.
Far better than I expected- way closer to KZ2 than I thought it would be. And yes I know there is a huge user base difference. KZ2 will have better legs, but this has taken a lot of steam out of the KZ2 launch in the Americas, where Sony really needs to make up some ground.
Whats with all the hate towards this game and its sales? I didnt buy it because I tried the demo and even played in the tournament this past weekend and felt the game wasnt for me, I dont have patience and this game is all about patience and strategizing, but several of my friends bought it and love it. I hope it does well, its just not my type of game.
Take a low selling (and generally crappy) genre on consoles, throw in an excellent developer and the Halo name, and this about what you get. Not amazing like Halo 3, but not horrible like Command & Conquer 3. It's doing well. ^_^
um,..250,000 copies RTS in consoles,. vs 350,000 fps in consoles, and the winner is?
Halo: Master Chief's Mystical Adventure to Rainbow Island Would sell 5 million LTD lol
Good sales for an RTS on a console. I'd love to figure how much influence 'Halo' in the title was vs the game itself (i.e. if it was just generic figures but otherwise the same). Clearly the game needed to be good, but I feel that leveraging the Halo franchise made all the difference here. The game does seem good but so have other RTS that have sold less. The Halo name has got to be behind a fair few of these sales. After all look at the attatch rate for Halo on 360 - how could a fair number of those fans not get this whether it was an RTS, a point and click adventure or whatever. Simply put those arguing these are poor sales for a Halo game aren't getting it, and those arguing the sales are just because the game is that good and that the Halo name had nothing to do with it are equally not getting it. This, and soon ODST are the first big tests of how robust games with 'Halo' in the title and good quality production values will sell on 360. Personally I think that they'll all sell very well unless MS messes up by letting some poor quality games slip out that tarnish the brand name. I wonder, wink, wink, what it would have sold if on PS3 though? A true test of negative loyalty perhaps?
I love the "this is amazing for an RTS" etc. comments. Take out the name "Halo" and put like "Bob" or something in there, and this game wouldn't ever come close to 1 million. Civilization Revolution was a great game, but it didn't fare so well. I'm not trying to condescend the game, just not trying to let it get overblown. I personally know many people who bought this game, without knowing anything about it, because it had "Halo" in the name. And many of you on VGC probably don't like RTSs that much either, so don't try and make it seem like this game "converted" you
@senortaco True. The mulitplayer element is also a big factor to drive sales up(let's leave wii fit out of it as that is a freak). halo - online, Mario with his kart and buddies - online. I have never played R&C so I'm not quite sure about a multiplayer element there.
Fenristh says: Uh, not really "on pace" with KZ2. Didnt Killzone 2 manage 350k in the US alone...? That's already more. ************************************** Make KZ2 into a RTS game and sell it on the PS3 and lets see how many copies is sell. Let me put it this way. Halo ODST will outsell KZ2 in it's first week. You want to bet on that? Halo Wars is a RTS game and whether it has Halo, FF or MGS in it's name, it's not going to sell millions in it's first week. That's a fact. Game consoles are not know for selling a lot of RTS games. Everyone knows these games are usually played with keyboard/mouse and not a game controller. Killzone 2 didn't sell anywhere close to what Halo 3, Gears 2 or Cod4 sold. Halo 3 outsold by almost 4x's the amount and that was on Day 1.
Established Mascots FTW!!! Sega - Sonic (for better or worse right now =/) Nintendo - Mario Microsoft - Halo (Master Chief) Sony - Ratchet & Clank (For me this should be Sony's mascot anyways) ...One thing that having a good branded mascot can do for you sometimes is provide great sales.
People have really gotten beside themselves with this game. I don't understand how you can have the biggest name in Real Time Strategy games announce a game for a system, and tell us they're going to make it control good, and then you attach the Halo name, synonymous with over 20 million game sales, and worldwide recognition, and be anywhere near surprised the game sells good. Like I said, it's frikkin halo.
Very good initial sales considering the reviews. Wonder if it will show a strong performance. Don't see why not with the userbase in the US
@Kowenicki "lets see how Halo ODST and Halo 4 (if ever) compares to Killzone 2 shall we..." I don't know why this statement is aimed at me, but any Halo title is currently a force to be reckoned with regardless of the genre. It seems this gen that only a Nintendo 1st party release can comfortably put Halo in its place. Killzone has a long way to go to reach where Halo is now but at least the groundwork is being laid out. PS: I am assuming you are refering to sales and not game quality. If you are talking game quality I am in no position to comment as my only contact with Halo is at work on the PC when ever a bunch of us get together play after work on our network....or during lunch...or at some point on a slow day, or...whenever. I did purchase Halo3 for my then x360 but it prodded before I got a chance to play it.
@sebnod: Sure, why not? Halo 3 with its old gen graphics still manages to chart about as often as not.
@sebnod Since you are new here, could you please read a couple of pages on this forum by yourself ? This way, we won't waste our time making your education...
Are we done with Killzone 2 ? Can't we just have a conversation and not mentioning that game everywhere? :) Good results HW.
@ Zenselai lol excellent. maybe odst with old gen graphics will have a real success...
@Jereel: Yeah, but Killzone 2's "week" was only one or two days long in North America.
The question we all have to ask ourselves. "would it have sold this well if it didn't have Halo in the title " ? I'll leave that question unanswered
@sebnod Most americans think Halo Wars is a FPS? If they thought that, it would have had 2m+ day 1 sales. @brendin24 you're comparing 1 day sales to week 1 sales. Why not wait a few days before talking?
Are people really dense enough not to realize the >250K day one is comperable to 350K week 1? HW will end up 300-400K week 1, probably closer to 300K, although good word of mouth from day 1 folks could lead to a nice weekend for HW.
the game is huge, got it(here in UK) last friday and already played more than 24hrs...
Brett is awesome.. I expected it to sell at east more than Fable 2, but I guess WRPGs are more popular than RTS games. Killzone 2 is still better, because PS3 said so!!! The PS3 can levitate objects. Be careful what you say or it might throw a brick at you fools!! @badgenome I'm pretty touchy too, but in a good way ~_n P.S. - Fable 2 owned Halo Wars, or did I say that already?
Halo Wars sold over 200 000, while Killzone 2 sold over 350 000. How is Halo Wars even on par with Killzone 2?
http://www.halowars.com/stats/globalstats.aspx The stats say that already 1million unique players played the game online! What about that?
@kitler: Wow, you sure changed your tune. You used to be one of the cooler people on these forums, and now you're enthused by some game's supposed failure. Oh the fanboyism, how foul is its odor.
@perpride: Sorry, that part wasn't directed at you necessarily. Just the general downplaying of Halo Wars' success in this thread. Though you are a touchy little fellow!
halo franchise on a console that "sells software like gangbusters" from the top name is RTS development. oh the fail, how sweet your fragrance.
oh and... @ justinian lets see how Halo ODST and Halo 4 (if ever) compares to Killzone 2 shall we...
My god there is some crap being spoken here? So what are you people saying? The Halo franchise is dead? The 360 is suddently dead? What? The level of sales is because it is an RTS pure and simple. The guys who are slagging off the numbers... how about you give your weird and wonderful reasons other tha it being an RTS on a console? And to give you some perspective, a simulataneous launch would have had Halo wars at about 150k less than KZ2. I think that would probably put it in the top 5 or 10 on the PS3 ever...
Uh, not really "on pace" with KZ2. Didnt Killzone 2 manage 350k in the US alone...? That's already more.
I dislike Halo FPS, but I will be picking this up since I like RTS's. I could care less that Halo is in the title.
@badgenome - dude why would I give a shit about how well Killzone 2 sells in comparison to Halo Wars? I don't work for Sony dude. They are two completely different games, completely different genres, hell they are even on completely different consoles. The 360 has already proven itself to be one hell of a software mover. Mix that in with the fact that Halo has always been the Xbox's flagbearer. All I'm saying is that if the trilogy sells ~25 million, we should not be too shocked that a spin-off would hit the numbers that it did. In fact, if you check my post history, I'm pretty certain that my prediction was that Halo Wars would outsell Killzone 2.
its not that RTS havent been great on consoles....LOTR was pretty solid...i was curious to see what a very good quality RTS with a great name attached to it could do and we have an answer it can sell. From what ive read, and seen in vids the games just good in general....throw in halo and there we have it. And can we please stop the kilzone vs halo wars vs odts vs halo 3 vs whatever......lets hope that this release pushes devs to realize great RTS can be sold on consoles and hopefully this will give a boost to RTS quality and production for all gamers who play console only.
I'm glad, I suspect this game will have good legs as those who are not really into RTS games, but love halo get to try it out more (Rentals, Trying it out at friends, borrowing). Word of mouth is what got halo to be amazing, I have no doubt word of mouth will do the same for Halo Wars.
Maybe if it sells well enough, they'll put the team back together for a second one or a Gears Wars. They seemed like nice chaps with strong enthusiasm for the game in all the game's production videos that have been on Live.
MontanaHatchet, kinda proves MysticD point, doesn't it? Perpide, see MysticD's post. Nojustno, ignore sebnod, it's just lanod's new name.
@simulacram I dunno man, mario with a rocket launcher would be pretty sweet.
@pepride: It was on a damn board game, and it didn't sell that much. Apparently Brett's comment about selling on pace with KZ2 hit a nerve with some people. :-D
@Simulacrum "You can't put Mario in to k18 Fps game and think it would sell just because its Mario." How do you know? Has it ever been done? Last year you couldn't put a fitness game on wii and make billions$. Halo is a big franchise and FAR, FAR more popular than the little know (until recently) Killzone. For Killzone to be even competing with the mighty Halo name brand is a result.
It is amazing how you can stamp Halo on a game like this and it will sell great (ala mario). I mean look at Civilization Rev. These guys have been making RTS games forever and Halo Wars will outsell that game in the first week. Halo = goldmine forever. It is not at all on par with mario but it is definitely second.
You can't put Mario in to k18 Fps game and think it would sell just because its Mario. Rts is so popular on Pc and always has been bad on Consoles..
How is everyone impressed by the fact that a game with the name "Halo" in it sold this much? It could have been a damn board game and would have sold this much lol.
HW will fail, Killzone 2 will have better legs, for sure. Many americans thing HW is a FPS... not really.
MysticD, I've never even heard of Halo Clix. And a board game with a brand name on it doesn't guarantee success. I just saw a box for Beatles Monopoly the other day. Does that mean that version will sell millions upon millions? Take a guess.
Halo Clix and Halo board game bomb really bad, and those have Halo name on it. So I don't think Halo fans blindly buy everything with Halo on it. My nephew who is Halo nut is not getting Halo Wars because he only like FPS. I thought you left for neogaf ...
Glad to see an RTS sell so well, even with Halo in the name. It is a very good game
Let's stop this 'RTS on a console' crap. It's frikkin Halo. Yes, the 20 million+ franchise. Yes sister to Halo 3, closing in on 10 million sales. Let's be honest people, we all knew this game was going to move gangbusters. Just like Halo: ODST will and anything that has Halo in the name. Let's not try to make this bigger than it is because it's an RTS. That is completely overshadowed by the fact that HALO is in the name. With that said, the game did very well. It's apparently a really good game, and got good reviews, and it does a good service to RTSs on Consoles, and it will sell good, it looks like. Go Halo!
