Nintendo Confirms New System In Development - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 14 April 2018 / 7,665 Views

In what shouldn't be a shock to anyone, Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi has confirmed that the company is hard at work on a new video game system.

Shinya Takahashi revealed the fact in a BBC interview conducted at the BAFTA awards, which you can view below.

The key quote comes at the end of the interview, where Takahashi says the following: "Nintendo constantly works on hardware, so we have been doing research and development. So you may see the new system sometime in the future."

Every company does this but I don't think its wise to be talking about a new system when they just released one a year ago.

if it is to do with switch this is the main issue. Definitely they are planning switch successor but don’t stunt your system by saying a new hardware sometime in future with no elaboration.

99% he was referring to Switch Pro. I think it's quite obvious that there's a Switch Pro in developement. The production model for Switch will be outdated from a day to another and for Nintendo will be cheaper to produce better hardware than maintain the one they sell now. The same thing happened with PS4 and PS4 Pro, cause both console were born in a transiction period for their respective market.

That might be also a switch mini, or 9ne that is only portable... makes sense for me. Smaller, more portable, 3ds size.

Could be but i don't think so. A smaller Switch will not be a Switch anymore cause the Joycon can't fit with a smaller hardware and if you lost Joycon and the dual mode TV/Handheld, as i said before it won't be a Switch anymore.
Many software exploit the peculiarities of Switch. Share the game with friends, motion control, Labo, etc ...
I do not think that Nintendo will be making smaller joycon, it would create further confusion, which was one of the main problems of Wii and the transition to WiiU.

Did anyone actually watch this and think about the translation? The question asked is if they're shocked at the success of the Switch, the reply / translated answer is that Nintendo are always working on new hardware. This seems like Chinese whispers if I'm being honest regarding "new system in development"

If this is the Switch NX, then I will eat my hat because Nintendo finally realized power matters, even if not everything...

pretty dumb move to announce the replacement of their current console less than 2 years after release... or is it a 4K version of the switch witch won't be portable

So? Sony is probably already planning for PS6 :)

Pretty sure he is just saying that they area always working on new hardware (its not like their hardware people take a break for a few years after a system launches) or more likely he's just talking about the first Switch revision, which I'm guessing could possibly come out next year for the holidays with a price drop on original Switch.

Of course, they wouldn't let their hardware divisions sit around on their asses all day. I'm positive they're even already shelving ideas for a system after the next one.

Why would they be working on a new console right after launching the Switch last year?

Is this a handheld or a home console?

  • 0
Mr.GameCrazy UltimateUnknown (on 14 April 2018)

This isn't really anything to be alarmed about. Nintendo has always started working on new hardware after launching a game system.

The switch is a full fledged home console... there will never be another nintendo non-hybrid.

Maybe a portable focused system?

  • -4
Lucca Azzanation (on 14 April 2018)

I highly doubt that they would ever make another portable-only console when the Switch is such a huge success.

Switch is a portable... they will not split the eco systems anymore.

  • +2
Azzanation Azzanation (on 15 April 2018)

Well its either a true successor to the 3DS or another Home Console which will replace the Switch.

I hope it's a new dedicated handheld.

As soon as a console is released begins the work on it's successor. So yeah, no surprises at all here. PS5/Xbox Next where certainly all in development already before even project NX got teased about. Early on, it's very slow and mainly only collecting potential ideas for a successor, and I'm sure that's exactly the phase Nintento's next gen console is right now. PS5/Xbox Next should already be past that point for a long time and are probably now in discussion with the potential parts suppliers and finalizing their designs.

I didn’t watch the interview so not sure if they are talking about switch or another system altogether. In my opinion it is quite early for a switch update if that’s what it is.

Tridrakious Bristow9091 (on 14 April 2018)

This seems like a really bad idea, if it is a dedicated gaming handheld to directly replace the 3DS, it's going to be pulling resources away from the Switch. Handhelds NEED too much to be successful anymore. Outside of a handheld, I don't know what a new system it would be. There is no way they would willingly halt/slow down the Switch cycle.
