Sony released its earnings report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2017 ending on December 31.

The company revealed it shipped nine million PlayStation 4 units during the quarter to bring the total number of consoles shipped to 76.5 million units. Shipments for the quarter were down by 0.7 million compared to the same quarter in 2016.

To compare, Sony announced PlayStation 4 consoles sold to consumers surpassed 73.6 million units as of December 31, 2017. That would put around 2.9 million consoles on store shelves and in transit.

Games & Network Services revenue did see a 16.2 percent increase due to increased software sales. Operating income increased from 50 billion yen a year ago to 85 billion yen.

Sony still forecasts 19 million PlayStation 4 consoles shipped for the fiscal year, which would bring lifetime shipments to 79 million units by March 31.

Sony as a whole saw revenue increase 11.5 percent to $23.65 billion, while operating income jumped 279.8 percent to $3.11 billion.

*Sony is a beast. (TM)

Amazing profit increase!

PS4 shipments about what i expect. They need to ship 2.5 million to reach the 19 million forecast for the FY. Should easy happen.

Especially after seeing the huge boost games like Monster Hunter World and Dragon Ball FighterZ have already done. Dissidia should help move a few systems.

And the excitement building for God of War will drive sells even though it comes out in the new FY.

We can expect almost a 100 by the end of this year, could even exceed that but the switch is giving it a tough fight.Regardless they're both doing great

Switch doesn't really seem to be affecting PS4 sales. PS4 had it's best black friday ever, and was up YOY.

Yeah but in japan the switch has taken over the market, but ps4 is still doing well everywhere.

Again though, Switch is bigger in Japan yes, but PS4 sold 1.8m units in Japan in 2016. and 1.785m this year. Basically flat.

They're both sort of doing their own thing outside of each other and it's great to see both doing so well.

I don't know where you are getting that from but there is no way in hell PS4 is hitting 100 million by end of 4th quarter 2018 with or without the switch being in the market. That would mean all time sale highs for the console in its 5th year at market.

Fantastic. Good work, Sony. 2018 is the biggest year for Sony and the Player worldwide, thanks to PS4.

At least Sony is clear about their figures: Sold to consumer 73.6, shipped 76.5 as of December 31 2017... Unlike a certain other company who a bit confusing on this front.

OMG now we complain about Nintendo numbers released LMFAO.
Nintendo has an INTERE SITE where you can find the exact numbers by 0.01m, for games, consoles, and revenue.

They also release numbers specific for America, Japan, some times Europe, and we complain about them? Ridiculus.

This has been one of my all time favorite consoles imo. The games for the first few years were a bit thin across the board on all consoles..but 2017 sure did make up for it. It makes me excited to see what they have in store for the PS5
