The PlayStation 3 has passed 70 million in sales as of the week ending December 8, according to VGChartz latest sales figures. This milestone comes one month after Sony announced it had shipped its 70 millionth PlayStation 3 to retailers. The console currently sits at 70,316,129.

The PlayStation 3 first launched in Japan six years and one month ago on November 11, 2006. It was released less than a week later in the US on November 17, 2006. It wouldn't launch in Europe until the following year, March 16, 2007 in the UK and March 23 in the rest of Europe.

The Xbox 360 passed the 70 million mark three weeks ago, the week ending November 17. It took the Xbox 360 seven years to reach the milestone, averaging 10 million in sales per year, while the PlayStation 3 has averaged 11.67 million units per year. The gap between the consoles currently sits at 1.95 million units.

The gap between the ps3 and the xbox360 is going to be fully decided by either Sony or Microsoft, the instant one of them announces a solid date for their next home console it will Kill the sales of their current gen system and the other one will run away with it.

It's becoming extremely likely that PS3 will overtake the XBox 360 much sooner than many of us thought. It has a shot by next holiday.

UnknownFact (on 13 December 2012)

In fact it's taking too long, but blame Kinect for that.

Considering the 360 only has Gears: Judgement in its exclusive lineup, I have a feeling that the PS3 will take the 360 before the next holidays start

people ps3 is way past 70million now. since Sony announced that ps3 had past 70million on november 4th. http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/16/ps3-sales-hit-70-million-worldwide

ganoncrotch (on 16 December 2012)

shipped vs solded, this article means there are 70million ps3s sitting under tvs in sitting rooms. The Ign thing you linked to meant there were these 70million units in both homes and sitting in stores waiting for loving owners to adopt them :)
