The PlayStation 3 has passed 70 million in sales as of the week ending December 8, according to VGChartz latest sales figures. This milestone comes one month after Sony announced it had shipped its 70 millionth PlayStation 3 to retailers. The console currently sits at 70,316,129.
The PlayStation 3 first launched in Japan six years and one month ago on November 11, 2006. It was released less than a week later in the US on November 17, 2006. It wouldn't launch in Europe until the following year, March 16, 2007 in the UK and March 23 in the rest of Europe.
The Xbox 360 passed the 70 million mark three weeks ago, the week ending November 17. It took the Xbox 360 seven years to reach the milestone, averaging 10 million in sales per year, while the PlayStation 3 has averaged 11.67 million units per year. The gap between the consoles currently sits at 1.95 million units.
