When I saw this I already knew from a report (also released the same day that these number's were released) that 2.1 was from TWO days of sales. Still amazing, but its Mrstickball, and his console has something to prove.

Just looking at the sales in the US for the 8th the ps3 seems to be doing really bad over there. Only 1 title in the top 10, LBP has dropped like a stone despite having a poor first week. Resistance the big hope only managed 300k.

Its the week on week hardware sales thats is the real problem though they are not getting anywhere near the 360 numbers and they have released what were meant to be there big titles.

I think the ps3 is going to have to settled for third now in the states, obviously second in Japan. Europe is very interesting though. Pretty much neck and neck installed base and software sales wise but the price drops and bundles have had a big effect in favour of the 360 by the looks of things. Some fall from grace for Sony.

We know from mygamercard.net that Madden 09 was around 175k users at the end of October and 1.2 million sold for NPD by the end of September. That should mean that the first week sales of Gears 2 was quite close to where Madden was at the end of October maybe just a bit more. Now Gears 2 in the US on mygamercard is sitting at 256k three days into week 2 so I would expect a some pretty nice legs going forward.

Its banned in Germany and it will have an effect on overall EU sales - thats the second biggest market after the UK with no high street sales at all. Of course serious gammers will get it anyway they will just import from Amazon.fr / UK / US etc.

700,000 looks optimistic we will have to see. Its still going to be absolutely huge though, certainly bigger than MGS 4.

At any rate, time will tell what's going on. Unlike MGS4, Gears only had 2 days, so mixing up 1 day, and 2 days of sales is a bit different of a scenario than having 4-5 days like most other games.

This prediction is not holding up well at least in the European area thus far. 500k first week tops and possibly as low as 400k for the first week. Meaning 700,000 is nowhere near it. If we are doing the same in America we are looking about 1.4-1.7 first week there which would level it off to anywhere in between 1.8-2.2 million. Meaning we may have another MGS4 prediction on our hands where first day sales turned out to be first week sales. Then in the second week it'd probably do about 600k-800k which is is anywhere from 2.4 to 3.0 million in it's first 9 days. Still great but nothing that has been stated here.

Of course this is all still speculation on trends but 4 million after 9 days is looking difficult.

KatJin - I'm unsure. Right now, it looks like a discrepancy of 70,000 units or a little higher in the UK. It'll be interesting to see what goes down, since Gears 2 released in a totally different timeframe than what we're used to.

For all we know, some data sets we get are being pushed back into Week 2 versus Week 1. Everyone needs to wait and see what the drop is next week, and where NA sales wind up at.

And yes, KatinJin, your right about the Halo 3 5-day number. Gears didn't have that extra 3 days of sales before ChartTrack reported sales. I'm not saying the discrepancy is large enough, but it's plausible. Either way, Gears 2 is looking like it's tracking in the realm of Halo 3, give or take 10%, in the UK. Unfortunately, it's impossible to say "your wrong!" or "your right!" when Halo was released on a Tuesday (not typical in Europe), and Gears was released on a Friday (not typical in North America).

with the way things are going in terms of piracy, and lawsuits over drm, dont be surprised if games that devs want to put on pcs, have to have a console counter part, or they wont see a return on development cost. its a very weird market. the freedom of the pc may be its undoing with highflying games like gears, or MGS. free flash games, and low cost games might take it over where ad revenues, or small sells can keep devs ahead of the game

I know a lot of people on forums don't count PC/360 as exclusives, but joe public does, most people play their games on a consoles.

But this time, gow2 may not have pc version, because the first chapter it only has a very poor sales figure in PC version. I remember its sales is even less than 10% of 360 version. Console market now dominated the gaming industry while pc market is dominated by the onling game such as World of warcraft

though this pains me to admit Microsoft are doing so well, I'd be very surprised if Sony sold a million units of Resistance 2 before Christmas. and even if they do, it pales in comparison to what Microsoft are doing. right now the Xbox 360 is winning the battle for 2nd by a country mile. in fact its not even a battle for them.

anyway well done to Microsoft. this has never been about console hardware for them. its always been about quality of software. thats why Sony can't catch them. if they keep pumping games like Fable, Banjo and Gears of War 2 out, people will still be buying 360 consoles at a mad rate.
for me Sony has failed to make the impact what wanted to this year, not saying its anything bad or not. but they can forget about taking 2nd place!

I have to say this every time: The LBP bashing on this site is horrific.
This thread isn't about LBP, and whoever expected LBP to sell more than Gears day/week 1 should not have been taken seriously.
But hey, bashing innovation and creativity is a good time, right?

That said, great sales, assuming they hold up, for Gears.
Not sure if it deserves that much, but it's a solid sequel (And improves in many areas from its predecessor), so I'm not surprised in the least.
So great job, the overall sales this holiday season will be monstrous.

Sales mean sod all. Halo 3 sold millions but is still crap either way you look at it. Gears 2 is very very good but not amazing, lacked the impact of the first(my opinion, i just find Gears 2 , well a bit similar and a bit boring at times). 22 mill 360's, 2.5 mill copies of a game. Some people still don't seem to know about it.

umm.... did anyone really expect less than this? Not to put it down, but this is not very surprising to me given the hype the game has been getting and how many consoles the 360 has sold in the US. What WILL be interesting is how many 360s are sold because of this.

CaptD - They are if they spent as much as Konami did on MGS4.

The bad part about MGS4 is that, currently, is selling ~13,000 units a week. That's not very good for a title that debuted to more than 1.6m units...That puts it just over a 2x multiplier. Hopefully it can pick up though, or else it could be beaten by Fable 2.

Huge first week and a good few weeks after maybe, but the rules seem to have been re-written by Wii and Ds games that start of fairly big but keep selling in larger numbers many more weeks or months later.
Look at Halo 3 with it's massive launch, it hasn't yet outsold Halo 2 even with a larger userbase and massive hype.
Huge first weeks sales are no good if they fizzle out a few weeks later.

Do these numbers include the GoW2 bundles? 700k in others is great, but if the bundles aren't included, things are even better. If the bundles are included, GoW could have moved a very decent amount of hardware.

This game is so epic. The story is great, the coop is friggin sweet. The game is long as hell. Me and a buddy have about 12 hours in on coop hardcore and we still have another chapter.

If you don't own this game you are missing out on something special.

Great sales. Nothing more to say. I'll be very curious to see console sales for the 360 for the next few weeks. Some sort of spike must be there, but how much?

GEAR2 had the most detailed normal and parallex mapping, with the best lightning effect, detailed and unbelievable environment structure and amazing lightning technical effect throughout the whole game, many texture are extremely high-detailed with powerful visual effect on it that you can never see in any game in this console generation.

But THE biggest sales is GTA4 and HALO3, let us see if GEARS2 had the potental to beat down GTA4 and HALO3 and become the dominant master game of this console generation.
