The first thing that alerted me to this game was when Level 5 announced that they had a new RPG in development, I was a big fan of Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2 for the US) and was hoping for more of the same.
The opening week for the Japanese release in which WKC sold in the region of 200k was the confirmation I was looking for and since then I have patiently waited for a western release, all the while keeping an eye on any new information about the game, much praise was given to the character creation section through which you could create a side character to represent yourself within the game.
Another new element was the inclusion of online cooperative play, this is what really got me excited about WKC, Sony released a series of clips which showed the online play in action and I was more than impressed.
This game seemed to strive for approval in the western markets, online play and having yourself represented within the game are typical of western RPG's, traditional JRPG's have long rested on the gamers contentment to watch the story unfold rather than take an active roll themselves.
I now own a copy of the game and from what I have played so far, the game is living up to my expectations, the gamplay is about what I expected, the storyline is so far so good, but what really draws me to this game is the style and feel it excreets (yes excreets), this game creates a genuine atmosphere that 99% of western games fail to achieve.
WKC is a colourful fantasy land with stunning cutscenes and a real warmth, you can tell that alot of thought has gone into everything from monsters and bosses to the fact that you can enter most building without a loading screen.
The only drawbacks I have found so far include mediocre voice acting and some sub standard textures here and there, but for PS3 fans who have been long starved of JRPG's this is the perfect game to get you in the mood for FFXIII!
