No More Heroes is a hard game to review. I consider it the "Napoleon Dynamite" of video games; for the reason being it has its' own unique style and premise that isn't commonly seen and it more or less relies on this substance for a substantial amount throughout the whole game. Basically, you take on the role of Travis Touchdown (weirdest name ever), an otaku who, after buying a beam sword off an auction site (eBay?), becomes an assassin to get extra cash after spending everything he had on the sword. After finishing off his first assassin, Travis must now watch his back as he has now become a ranked assassin and must ascend to become number 1 if he ever wants to keep living in his small apartment complex full of anime junk, mexican wrestling videos, and his pet cat. Like I said earlier, this is a premise not normally seen in video games, mainly because IT'S WEIRD.
The game has an open-world feature but I found it to be the weakest part of the game. Unlike GTA, nothing happens if you drive fast or crash into things. It mainly serves as a map for the player so they can get from where they are to where they need to go. BOR-ing. The controls for the game are not what I expected; it handles well, but there's alot less "waggle" than I first anticipated since your primary weapon is a sword. If you move the wiimote up or down, so well the sword, and you use the A button to swing. Sometimes you can perform wrestling moves, for example, by moving both the nunchuk and the remote up, you can perform a suplex. Simple, but it works. Then there's the bosses. Before you can take them on, you first need to come up and pay the entry fees. You do this by completing assignments (take out rival gangs) or chores, which vary from picking up coconuts, or washing graffiti off the walls of the city of Santa Destroy. You need to do this EVERY time, and the price of the entry fees go up. Luckily, the boss battles are worth the trouble of going through this type of repitition.
Each boss battle is different than the last, and every single one is fun, which brings me to the sad part of this review. Unfortunately, the boss battles are the major highlight of this game. After you beat one boss, you want to hurry up and get to the next one but you need to go through all the pre-requisites of getting the money and doing odd jobs. Despite this, I still enjoyed playing No More Heroes and it can be fun when playing in small doses, and it's a welcome addition for players looking for something hardcore for their wii. Just don't expect it to grab your attention for too long but that's not much of a problem since Desperate Struggle is just around the corner.

The pal version was ruined when for some bizarre reason the blood was replaced by black mist which really ruined atmosphere and enjoyment. Message | Report |
