Policenauts is a rare gem, a game containing the kind of story that really grips you and makes you want to continue playing.

In terms of under appreciated gems, Policenauts is the cream of the crop. Policenauts spawned from the mind of Hideo Kojima (of Metal Gear fame) and was originally released in 1994 for the PC-9821 and subsequently released on the 3DO, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation. The game can best be described as a point and click adventure with some light gun shooting stages, taking story elements from “buddy cop” films and general science fiction. The game revolves around the point of view of ex-Policenaut (a group of expertly trained police officers chosen to be the protectors of earths new orbital space colony “Beyond”) Jonathan Ingram, who is now a private eye in New Los Angeles, and his quest to locate his ex-wife’s missing husband. Jonathan’s quest takes him back to space, where nearly 30 years before he had been in a terrible accident which left him lost in space for 25 years, to Beyond which has now grown into a massive colony full of crime and political turmoil.

As with any point and click adventure game, much of the actual game play is interacting with the people, items, and areas around you, and Policenauts is no different. The PlayStation version of game sports wonderfully detailed anime environments and characters paired with many fully 3d animated and anime cut scenes which really makes this type of game pop. To balance the point and click game play Policenauts also makes use of light gun combat which can be challenging but is very fun and helps pace the game and allows it to really feel like a buddy cop film. Both game play styles are executed to the highest standard possible, the dialog menus for the point and click game play as well as the level of difficulty for gun combat are top notch. However the real strong point of Policenauts is the story, which starts of with a bang, and never slows down. The characters are dragged through a plot consisting of terrorism, drugs, murder, and political intrigue which is mature and well developed. Kojima’s work with the Metal Gear Series is very wildly regarded and Policenauts lives up to the same level of excellence as his most popular franchise.

While Policenauts was never released in America or Europe the quality of the game makes it special, the kind of game you import to experience. Policenauts is indeed a rare gem, one that deserves not only official localizations of the game so more people can experience it, but also the kind of game the deserves praise for the depth of the story compared to it's peers. Hopefully thanks to online gaming communities like PSN and Xbox Live we will someday see an official english language localization of Policenauts, but for those who cannot wait for that day then import the game, download the fan translation patch that was recently released to the public and enjoy one of the best video games of the 90s, If not one of the best video games ever.

So far I'm really enjoying the game, I had been waiting quite a long time for the English translation patch to be completed and it was well worth the wait.
