Hybrid Heaven is a difficult creature to describe. Calling it a Sci-Fi fighting/rpg is accurate, yet does so little to really describe the experience of playing the game. Playing it is like being the director of your own "B" Sci-fi/horror movie featuring martial arts, clones, aliens, and over-the-top world domination plots. Ed Wood would be proud.
It's hard to pinpoint why Hybrid Heaven is so engaging. On many levels it is a flawed work. The fighting mechanic works well, with plenty of twists. You can learn moves from enemies, and level up different body parts as your fighting style evolves. Though moving during a fight can be somewhat akward. The levels are creative, but sometimes repetitive. A lot of work was put into the voice acting, but it sounds like a bad X-files episode. And I have no idea what poor intern was drafted into writing the English subtitles, but he apparently had only heard of the English language in passing. Virtually every aspect of the game is slightly quirky, but many of the flaws are oddly endearing.
And for all of it's flaws at least it had some ambition. The melding of fighting and RPG games is still an unusual feat. Even if the parts aren't perfect they dared to create a new experience for players. Hybrid Heaven is a singular experience that cannot be found in any other game. If it can be found for sale pick it up.

Great game, it was my RPG. I spent over 100 hundred hours in a single playthrough, and yeah, I did more than once, obviously. It was a little difficult to beat Ultimate mode but did it several times, Unfortunely, never manage to get JS to the max level :( I got bored playing survivla mode a hundred of times xD I'm serious. Recently, I got it again in 2007 online but I didn't much about buying things online and when I put in the N64, it didn't work :( and well, no change to get my money back :( I lost about 320/420 mexican pesos(30/40 US dollars). Wish it could hit the VC but honestly I doubt it'll happen. Message | Report |
