Larger lot
Enable the map_edit on code. You can now use your pointer to take over the entire lot. Then, enable the map_edit off code and you make the land go as low as the game will allow in the lot. Enable the move_object on code and delete your family. You can now build your house. Note: Even if you have kids, the bus will go right through your house.
