Xbox Live Arcade Sales, Week Ending 3/01/08 (Triggerheart = 7.2k) - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 01 March 2008 / 4,566 ViewsSchmup 'Triggerheart Excelica' garners 7,200 units besting January's schmup 'Omega 5', but falls well short of leader 'N+'

Remember: this chart is 5-day, versus the typical 7-day charts, due to the fact that I was unable to do a chart last Saturday, and did it Monday.
This week, Triggerheart Excelica launched to decent numbers. Triggerheart Excelica is the 2nd ever Dreamcast game to come to the XBLA Service, with Rez HD being the first. Excelica beats previous $10 Schmup recordholder, Omega 5's debut of 6,000 units by a decent 20% increase. However, like Omega 5, it was vastly frontloaded this week: it's debut sales on it's first day was almost 40% of the 3day week (which is rather high). Another major note: Japanese Xbox 360 users made up 40% of the entire Excelica userbase. In the case of Omega 5, it sold only to 14% Japanese users (which is well above the norm, as the JP userbase constitutes maybe 5% of the average XBLA purchase base).
- Sonic the Hedgehog reaches 250,000 Units. It's the quickest 16-bit, $5.00 Console Port to do such, with only TMNT (to my knowledge) doing it faster for any sort of older-ish port.
- N+ increased very well vs. it's 5day last week. This is a decent sign, and has already put N+ into the #3 position of 2008 releases (edging out previous #3 Poker Smash)
- Rez HD finishes it's first month just shy of 100,000 units. Wow. Insane. It's multiplier was very weak (3.99x), but considering how well this DC/PS2 game did it's first week, it is certainly expected, given the niche game it is.
- Chessmaster LIVE ends it's first month with almost 28,000 units. Despite opening up very poorly, it's multiplier was massive: 6.97x vs. it's first week.
- Poker Smash had a massive drop from last week: it shed 70% from last week...Although it tracked for 9 days last week (vs 5 this week), it's still pretty notable. Fortunately, the game has still done very well with grossing $400,000 in 4 weeks.

Next Week's XBLA Game: Rocketmen: Axis of Evil (800msp)
Mrstickball's comment:
Personally, I'm very excited for Rocketmen. It's Capcom's first entry to the XBLA Market since SF2 did oh-so well in Aug. 2006. Rocketmen also marks the first multi-platform release on XBLA/PSN on the same week. The game also looks pretty good. Sales will be interesting, because I tend to think the only game that released on PSN first, Gripshift, sold very poorly on XBLA. Could PSN steal some sales from the Arcade?
Personal Prediction for Rocketmen: 9,000-10,000 3day sales.
Oh, and in other news of no intrest (or maybe some interest): I'm interviewing this next week for a video game company. If hired, I will be doing sales analysis for XBLA games, as well as other projects :) Hopefully I get it, because I'd love to have more time for this, and of course, market analysis.

Sega -
And I totally understand, and agree with that. However, I don't see how a game could be qualified as being a game that no one wants to play, when 70%+ of users did indeed play the game enough to unlock achievements. Maybe 5% of users, however, unlocked 100+ GS on MS3. So I'd be willing to say that there are certainly a few people that decided to max out achievements, but of the 80,000 people that own the game, only a small part of that actually liked the game enough to trudge through it.
So it's the same thing with FF2 - yes, there are people that will max the GS, or get a majority of GS, but there are tons of people that do indeed play it enough to validate their playing with atleast getting the easiest achievement in MS3.
First of all I didn't say everyone is an achievement whore and second, I didn't say MS3 sucked. And that still doesn't prove that majority people will enjoy a certain game if they unlocked certain achievements for that specific game. It's like saying yeah a majority people loved playing Fuzion Frenzy 2 because they completed all 1k for it. They didn't, they just played to get achievements for it (FF2 sucks terribly, not a great party game at all). Easy way to build some points.
I'm going to drop this though, we'll be at this forever. I really don't think this amount or some sort of record of people unlocking achievements for a certain game means that they liked it. Tons of people especially achievement whores force themselves to play games just for points. That's just my point. We just see it differently.
I respect you though ;). I think you do a fantastic job every week with XBLA sale results.
I've tried the triggerheart demo, and gotta say its pretty fun. I'm a long time fan of scrollin' shoot 'em ups [since sector Z, Xervious & 1942 on Nes]. This and the anime style art direction make it a must buy for me, now if i can just get some points.
Sega,
The issue is that not everyone is achievement whores. I track games using total achievements for the older games, but the newer ones I track only by gamercards. Because of this, I can establish ratios of gamers that own the game vs. gamers that actually have unlocked any achievements. Achievement whoes are obvious (as I used to be one, and ranked in the top 500 X360 owners at one point).
For Metal Slug 3, somewhere near 80-85% of users actually have achievements. Yes, you might think MS3 sucks, but for some reason, alot of those 70,000+ people have actually unlocked achievements - not that many have unlocked ALL or a majority of the achievements (showing they actually liked the game enough).
mrstickball, you surely do not know the way of being an achievement whore! :p lol
Achievement whores don't care, they'll play anything. From absolute crap to great games just for achievements.
Metal Slug 3 is enjoyable but repetitive and those achievements aren't easy (of course like you mentioned Tempest and other games sure hell are a lot of worse but MS3 is still isn't easy). Triggerheart is the same but to me, a below average shoot em up. Achievements are possible but I'll leave that for shoot em up fanatics.
Yaris isn't that bad though, just got to get use to it. Sure its like getting punched in the nuts but whatever. People never take advantage of free stuff too, people def. need to check the market more.
prepare to be bored.
Never played Yaris, but I didn't know it was free. Now that I know it's free, I do plan on downloading it, and giving it a whirl.
Sega -
But having said that, atleast with Metal Slug 3 and Triggerheart, your playing a game that is fun enough to where you WANT to unlock the achievements (and therefore count yourself in the numbers).
In the case of Yaris, it has one of the higher weightings I have to give out vs. raw numbers: it's about a 4.8:1 ratio of people w/ achievements vs. sales numbers.
And from judging the newer games, where I have data of cards vs. achievements being unlocked, Metal Slug 3 is actually a bit better than you'd think - Tempest is real bad about users not unlocking achievements (somewhere near 50% of the purchase base hasn't unlocked an achievement).
Yaris does suck real bad but what you're going to expect off something free? Achievements aren't that hard, kinda time consuming but not that bad. You can easily get over 100 points easily in the game. Metal Slug 3 and Triggerheart is something to complain about, not Yaris when it comes to achievements.
DMeisterJ - Have you ever played Yaris?
It's quite possible that alot more people have played it some, but not enough to unlock achievements (which is how I track Yaris numbers). Yaris is one of the worst games on XBLA, and the achievements are very difficult....For the 1hr+ I played, I never unlocked an achievement. So download #s could be higher. Or maybe people avoided that turd, and were smart ;)
good luck for your interview
Thanks for that info :)
Yaris is free? Why aren't more people downloading it? It's FREE.
Oh, okay. Thanks.
I use gamercard websites that track achievement data....I take their total # of users for a given data, and extrapolate the data to achieve results similar to leaderboards, then weight games with difficult achievements.
This gives the best view of any given game. You can't use leaderboards 100% of the time because not every game tracks data very well - Triggerheart, for example, only has a top 100 list, and no LTD user data. Other games might have LTD user data, and still more might give you a ranking for 0 users (which may or may not be the real # of units sold).
And even then, you have people like me that show up on maybe half of the leaderboards.
Having said that, since MS updated the 360 with the new Fall Update, demos aren't tracked anymore. Because of this, I can now just use the total # of gamercards for a given game and multiply the data - this is very, very accurate compared the Major Nelson's data (which is litterally the only place legit data comes from).
If you don't mind me asking, how do you come up with your figures. I mean, it's not like you can call someone and ask them how much stuff has been downloaded right? I'm just curious.
I did get Triggerheart. It's lots of fun, but it is also very hard.
I have it on DC. Good game.
I might get Triggerheart. I played the trial and loved it!
I wouldn't thought Triggerheart would sell that well. I was expecting weak sales for it like around 5k or less. Either way, great info as always. Glad Rez is close to selling 100k. The game is that great!
Good luck on the interview!
I read DenisDenis' post (I didn't realize it was there). As far as I know, he's not affilated with MetaNet. LoadInc (the company he says he works for), however, did indeed make Mad Tracks.
I actually recieved an Email from another person affiliated with MetaNet, the developers of N+
He disclosed ALOT of information about N+, and some great info. The post-mortem analysis for N+ by Gamasutra was actually NOT the cost of N+ - it was a bit higher, as marketing, and other post-development expenses raised the price. He quoted me (and told me I could disclose the number) at $280,000 USD. I also believe he mentioned that they also needed to pay back the loan that they took out from the Government to make N+, further driving the required number of units up a bit more.
He quoted me on a number that N+ needed to sell, but I am unsure exactly if I'm allow to state it, but it's a bit more than the 40,000 we initially thought (but definately well within what N+ is going to make in a few more weeks).
As for DenisDenis from last week - if indeed his sources are correct, and Week #1 sales were 33.000 units, that'd mean that my chart(s) are accurate to within a few units - since he posted the first full week data at 7 days, we still had 2 extra days to track (when it was at 21,000). Add in the fact I still refuse to weight numbers, and the actual data I'm giving is most likely very, very close to actuals (within 5%)
correction* He said they [load Inc.] recorded sales of 33,000+
@Mr. stickball
In last week's edition of XBLA sales report there was a poster by the name Denis claiming that he was affiliated with the N+ team. He said that N+ sold 30,000 copies in its first week, how credible is he, or rather is he your contact?
Yay for N+ ... and the handheld versions will probably only add to the games income :D
N+ is now officially profitable
I didn't know N+ was on XBLA yet. I'll buy that soon.
