Xbox Live Arcade Sales Chart - 2/26/08 - News

16mb former flash-based game 'N+' stuns the charts with 20,000 units in 5 days, making back almost it's entire budget in it's first week, while Commander: Attack of the Genos sees a strong 2nd week.

Ok. Before I get to chart analysis, be forewarned: I was away this weekend on an Emmaus Walk. If you know what that is, then you'd know I wasn't around a computer during the weekend. Because of this, the charts are a 9-day chart, rather than the typical 7 days. This chart covers 2/15/08-2/26/08. Because of this, N+ has a 5-day opening. It's 3-day weekend was 13,654, putting it 35% above Poker Smash.
At any rate, there were quite a few notables in the charts this week, even with it being a 9-day chart:
- N+ had a massive opening, regardless of it being a 5day weekend. With 13.5k, and just above 20k for the respective 3 and 5-day tracking periods, N+ has done very well. With revenue over $205,000 it's almost earned it's entire budget back in 5 days. In it's Gamasutra Post Mortem article, N+ was stated to cost $214,000 to make. Taking out Microsoft's 30% cut, N+ needs roughly $305,000 to make a profit - it's already 66% of the way there.
- Uno winds up at #2, adding in the Arcade bundle sales. Removing the Arcade sales (which I assume makes up 20-25% of total weekly sales), it's still doing great. I'd tend to think Microsoft should announce at some point, that Uno sold over 1m copies, as it's real close to that number taking out the Arcade sales.
- Poker Smash suffered a massive drop - roughly 57% even after an extra 2 days on the tracking period.
- Rez HD has a fairly strong 4th week. It should just edge over 100,000 units on it's first month.
- Commander: Attack of the Genos increased it's sales quite handily over the 9-day week. It jumped from #17 to #6 on the All Prices charts.
- Chessmaster LIVE has a small drop (stays about par with last week, but 2 extra days). It's now selling less than 2:1 against Rez HD, despite selling 9:1 it's first week. It should continue to preform strongly.
For those wondering: Yes, Undertow is still getting alot of activations. I've been comparing gamercards and achievement scores for the game, and both are doing very similarly - indicating that many people are still deciding to try out the copy of Undertow that they already got for free.

Hey, I'm Denis from Load Inc.
To add to the news, N+ has sold over 33.000 in week #1.
To date, one of the best sale at launch!
When we launched Mad Tracks, we did 25.000 in week #1 which was very good already :)
Have a great day,
Denis.
N+ did way more than I thought it would...i'm happy for the developers...It's great that they disclosed so much information just before the games' release...Actually they received a fair bit of press coverage which must have helped draw attention to their baby, adding who knows how many extra sales :-)
Are you sure it's C? It would seem more likely that they would use the newer, faster and generally better C++...
@heruamon
I think I remember somewhere that all xbox360 games are coded using 'C '[computer language]. In other words, one of the easiest methods used when programming.
It's so great to see quirky, little games like N+ and quirky, big games like Rez doing well.
Heruamon - I haven't used any coding, but from what I hear......
XNA is rather simple to use, and there have been multiple games to come to XBLA with VERY SMALL development teams. I'd think that if you took some time and effort with XNA, you could produce some easy, meaningful games.
The issue with XNA programing (I assume) is the Q&A testing. Microsoft DOES NOT WANT a game that has issues, and has brutal certifications. So if the game is not playteted, and perfected, it takes weeks, and months to fix the small buggy issues.
As for Ikaruga - I would of really, really thought that it'd come this next week vs. Triggerheard Excelica. I'd think Ikaruga will launch in the next 2 weeks - as March is usually a big month for games (last year was Worms, SOTN and TMNT - 3 of the top-selling games last year).
Bangladdesh - I just recieved a PM from a developer from Metanet, creators of N+. I am asking him about what kind of revenue that they are looking to recieve from N+, and see if the 70/30 split is indeed true for them.
Also, this developer gave me a few new details about N+ in terms of actual budget and such. I just PMed him about permission of enlightening the VGC XBLA community about the real details of the game's budget, as they're a little different from the N+ Post Mortem on Gamasutra.com
Has anybody tried programming for XBLA? They make it seem so easy to program in it, but I imagine you've gotta have some experience. If you've some some minor experience in programming, is that okay?
Any idea when Ikaruga is coming?
So N+ is 70% and 30% Microsoft bcause its third party
Interesting. I knew that Microsoft paid certain parties less if Microsoft helped with the coding and localisation.
So basically the breakdown from XBLA is still 70/30 (developer/MS) if you make every part of the game yourself, and now 35/65 (developer/MS) if MS takes care of alot of the detais - in return, MS does alot more of the grunt work....Which is good.
The only issue with that Reuters article (from March, last year) is that I've seen that article many times, with some news stories reporting that Uno only had 1m downloads - and not actual sales downloads.
Great roundup, as always!
And also, Microsoft already announced that UNO sold 1 million: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN2724344720070328?pageNumber=1&sp=true
Wow 20k ... great debute :D
Not on all games.
The royalties cut are only for first party games, and because they not take in charge various thing (like ERSB rating process).
Some interesting details here : http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/24/gamesetwatch-breaks-down-xbla-royalties-cut/
Bang - other way around. MS takes 30%.
Anyway great debut nice to see the success means more content in the future most likely
I thought Microsoft takes 70% off the cut now though.
