PlayStation Move Sales Reach 1.2m Units Worldwide - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 17 November 2010 / 13,515 ViewsAccording to internal estimates by VGChartz, there are now over 1.2 million unique Move-compatible PS3s worldwide as of November 13th. This figure is based on sell-through of 1.9 million Move controllers (across all SKUs) since launch on the September 17th. VGChartz estimates that sell-in for Move controllers is likely to be over 3 million units by now. Around 40% of units have been sold in the Americas and 55% in Europe. For more detail on the calculation of unique Move-compatible PS3s from number of Move controllers and other related info please see this article.
VGChartz estimates that Move sell-through should easily reach 2.5 million unique PS3s by the end of the year (4.5 million controllers) and Sports Champions will continue to be the main driver for Move sales and could hit 1.5 million units sold by the end of the year.

I love how people say "I'm not a fanboy, because I own all every system". As if that's some kind of defense.
I use to use it too. Don't get me wrong, I thought it would work too. Then I grew up and just admitted I love PlayStation more and one day will have Kaz's job.
@Psyberius
Don't expect for me to answer to the quote you made if you ignore all the other comments that I did. But I just found funny how you know what is my product and that I want to highlight it.
"Then, they are not buying anything. Not even 25% of PS3 owners have the best selling PS3 game. What's going wrong with PS3 games?! They don't sell!...hm, I think your logic failed again."
That is kind of the point i'm making. Obviously Sony, Nintendo and M$hit have their own ways of doing things...the point however is selling as many as you can to as many people for as large amount of profit as possible. The name of the game is not console sales, it's all in the attaches. A lot of the owners tend to be rabid followers of their brand so if you do not get large numbers of attachments in software and add on hardware, you are not successful.
Saying that less than 25% owners have the best selling game is not something to highlight your product with lol.
The point that I didn't make with my previous post in so many words is: the Sony credo seems to be all about slow burning, plod it's way, making the console last until 2015...this is NOT a marketing plan that will result in success. I LOVE my PS3(well mostly due to its media playing ability these days due to a real snoozefest on titles the last bit for me...well until GT5 and GN) but i keep seeing these hmmm and hawww news releases that put me to sleep that show how complacent Sony has gotten. Nintendo and Microsoft are kicking the crap out of Sony on every platform and all Sony has to say is a quiet release on how 1.2m sales pre-xmas over a MONTH made them pleased. GIVE ME A BREAK...people should be breaking little old ladies legs for a Move but Sony marketing is ZZZZ.
A Strong and confident Sony makes Nintendo and Microsoft sharpen their pencils...the fallout of it all gives you and me better consoles and games.
LOL! Epic spin!
Its true tho 1.9m for sumthing that didn't have 500m marketing and was called a "flop" is EPIC!
it delivers the meltdown that we crave for LOL!
next up GT5 meltdown, can't wait!!!
wow misleading title lol
PlayStation Move Sales Reach 1.2m Units Worldwide
then 2 lines down:
This figure is based on sell-through of 1.9 million Move controllers
im not sure if this is incompetince, but it needs to either be changed to be more accurate than it is right now. the sales are at 1.9 million, not 1.2 million. there are an estimated 1.2 million unique buyers, that is not sales, thats changing words to meet your needs, the problem is that youre the only one who knows that you changed the meaning of the words
i know that catchy headlines sell and having move sales show up as lower than what people think they are will probably get people to look at it, but seriously, when its a lie, it probably gets people to look at what youre writing, but also find out that youre full of shit and then never look again.
@Psyberius
Yes, Kinect is totally killing Move in sales but to say Move is inching towards being a failure is silly. Anyone expecting Move to outsell Kinect this year is on cloud cukoo land. It wouldn't even be close.
It's not how you start, it's how you finish. Give both systems time and see where they end up.
The iphone was also considered a big failure by the anti-apple and MS brigade after 2months.
This Kinect, Move battle reminds me so much of when the PS3 was getting massively hammered in sales by the x360 a couple years back.
Back then many, who deluded themselves into thinking that they were "level-headed and intelligent" were posting similar "doom" crap about the PS3 being a massive failure and it going the way of the dreamcast.
You could have started your post "Move is doomed", it's been a while since all that "doom" shit.
My point, it is far to early to talk such rubbish, Move could show remarkable legs and steadily sell very well over a period of time. Kinect can blast out of the boxes and slow down.
You don't know, I don't know.
@psberius- sigh, if a company sets a goal and meets or exceeds it....it is considered a success. Sony has stated that they expect move to be a slow burner and they just stated that it has exceeded expectations. Hell, even capcom is surprised considering they are selling more RE5 GE than they expected. The psp was sonys first attack at the handheld market...how long has nintendo been doing it? I hardly consider 60 mil a failure and unless you are in the board meetings you can't say what they are happy with. In the end it's all about making money and clearly they are doing that.
@ Psyberius
"No, I'm just a person who owns every console..."
Who cares...? It proves nothing.
@Psyberius
"Regardless of how much has been spent on marketing by either products... It has taken Move over a month to get the same numbers Kinect has reached in 10 days"
Sure that huge marketing campaigns are not relevant. Your logic is hilarious.
"Move has had ample opportunity to crush Kinect yet it hasn't and it won't."
Ample? 2 months? Are you sure that this is the most properly word? I would say that these 4 years that Wii had in advance were an ample opportunity against Move and Kinect. It made Wii being related with Motion and Motion being related with Wii. Move didn't have any opportunity at all against Kinect since both are already annouced since 2 years ago. So, 2 months gap between launches is nothing.
"PS3 is almost neck and neck with Xbox360 worldwide so there is NO EXCUSE for their somewhat flat sales of Move."
Are both Kinect and Move the same thing? Are they following similar strategies? Are they appealing to the same gamers? Are they having the same kind of software line-up? Then, how can you compare them so early? Wait 1 or 2 years to see what's really going on.
" PS3 has over FORTY MILLION in console sales yet they have attached less than THREE PERCENT in over a month of sales. For something as unique and interesting, their sales should have been much greater."
Kinect is something more unique than Move, but you seem to want to "ignore the obvious truth". As for the Move attach rate, don't be so impatient. It will raise along the time.
"The owners of PS3 are NOT buying Moves...please look at the sales"
Then, they are not buying anything. Not even 25% of PS3 owners have the best selling PS3 game. What's going wrong with PS3 games?! They don't sell!...hm, I think your logic failed again.
"1.2 million in over a month is NOT impressive, it's slowly inching towards a failure"
Before Move, PS3 sales in Europe were below Wii sales. After Move, it became the opposite. Yes, definitely a failure.
In the end, it's funny how you think that it's you who are able to see the obvious truth.
Jordahn,
No, I'm just a person who owns every console that's ever been released who has no specific need to promote ANY of them.
I spout just the facts...Sony is NOT happy with the sales of Move...they would have to be idiots otherwise. Are you trying to tell me that Sony is happy with a little more than 1m in sales on a unique and interesting upgrade to their systems 1 month before CHRISTMAS? That it took a MONTH to reach 1m? That's LESS than a 3% attach rate. Ummmm wow.
BTW: I bought Move for my PS3 and it really isn't that much better than my wii. Now once some real games come out for Move, we'll see how my opinion of it is then...the child like games for wii do annoy me. Kinect isn't any better at the moment either.
BTW: You sound like Sony execs who keep spouting glory while PSP is being outsold 3:1 by DS. Success for Sony isn't measured by what they say in their official releases, it's by how many executives commit Seppuku after they receive their initial sales figures.... ;)
Psyberius you're just as a fanboy as the ones you claim. Assuming the numbers on VGCharts are dead accurate (again they are estimates) in regards to Move, Move doesn't have to sell better than Kinect. Success is not measure in outdoing your competitor. Success is measured by meeting and outdoing what you expect. I'm sure all these console makers are trying to out do each other. But as long as Move is making a profit, supported by developers, and supported by users, then it's a success. In fact SONY said official stated that Move has exceeded their expectation while ramping up production. I have no reason to think otherwise. And PS3 owners are buying Move which both this site and YOU have proven. If you buy a console and are dissatisfied wit it, you'd stop buying games for it. Again let's assume that VGChartz are dead accurate. Therefore a lot of those 1.2 million households feel that Move is worth it because they are buying extra controllers. And if we were to give validity to VGChartz numbers, then it's plausible that their "Move sell-through should easily reach 2.5 million unique PS3s by the end of the year (4.5 million controllers)" prediction would come true. This is good stuff for Move. Take off your hate colored glasses so you'd smell the roses.
kurasakiichimaru=Fanboi
MaxwellSmart=Fanboi
Cross-X=Fanboi

I can keep going. I love people who ignore the obvious truth in favor of promoting their obvious interest in floating a paticular system. Putting rose colored glasses on and spouting false truths or hope does not make your interest in that system look any better, it makes those of us who look at the whole picture roll our eyes.
Regardless of how much has been spent on marketing by either products, the truth(it's what we search for here at vgc, NOT fanboism) is what speaks. It has taken Move over a month to get the same numbers Kinect has reached in 10 days. Move has had ample opportunity to crush Kinect yet it hasn't and it won't. PS3 is almost neck and neck with Xbox360 worldwide so there is NO EXCUSE for their somewhat flat sales of Move. PS3 has over FORTY MILLION in console sales yet they have attached less than THREE PERCENT in over a month of sales. For something as unique and interesting, their sales should have been much greater. The owners of PS3 are NOT buying Moves...please look at the sales...1.2 million in over a month is NOT impressive, it's slowly inching towards a failure...I sincerely hope for Black Friday and Christmas success to help elevate them.
Finally, if there are stores that are sold out of Move it is probably due to manager short sightedness, NOT an abundance of sales. The sales figures just do not SUPPORT massive sell throughs of this hardware! Haven't we heard the "Ummmm yaaaaa dude I just had to drive to 11ty stores to get my (insert slow moving hardware or software name)" thing just a little TOO much.(on ANY platform...not just PS3)
Denial is NOT just a river in Egypt. PLEASE try to separate yourself from your default system and discuss truth, actual numbers, proper comparisons, not ignorance.
@ Lord_Yggdrassil
Wow, you're right! I'll totally take your anecdotal evidence (I work in retail, guys. RETAIL.) over sales estimates from VGChartz or numbers from NPD. Nope, definitely gonna go with your ONE store's success/failure with Move units. That way, it really does seem like the numbers are BS and that Move isn't selling well at all.
God, what a load off my mind! Thanks, nerd!
Didnt realize it before, but shouldnt the headline be "Unique Move Users Reach 1.2m", or rather "Move Sales Reach 1.9m Units WW" as stated in the article, since its a sales website? Just asking.
"...and it didn't cost them $500+ Millions in Marketing"
Even if MS didn't spend that much in marketing and had 2 months for sell Kinect it would have sold MORE than Move. Move is basically Wiimote HD and Sony are doing a piss poor job in marketing it. Somehow i find these numbers to be BS. I work at retailand the Move is bombing hard. It's a total waste fo space and probbaly won't start flying until Killzone 3.
Great sales for move! :D
...and it didn't cost them $500+ Millions in Marketing
I'd say it's some pretty good numbers for Move and seeing how Sony has been happy about Move, guess VGC only further proves that Move is doing very well.
nice
you are miles off on this one i believe...
Not bad sells that steadily improve. We can say that move is a success for Sony.
As the 3 motions devices for the 3 consoles have pretty good numbers, we can guess all the big 3 will have motion controls from the start on the next generation.
@Empire
Actually PS3 was over-tracked by VGC acording to NPD october numbers recently announced.
Funny how one of the comments discussing spelling got the word atrocious all kinds of messed up... 'attrocious' indeed!
Are these enough sales for real development of motion gaming on PS3? Perhaps. We shall see how it goes.
@ Grandia
"I know that my spelling ist not the best..."
You're still a troll.
So there are over 1.2 mil unique users, with ~ 2 mil controllers sold, in 2 months. Not bad for a device that was supposed to have a slow start and lacked a HUGE hype train before launch. Can't wait for estimates to be released after the holiday season. Of course these numbers may change when Sony puts out an update on the shipped numbers.
And glad to see VGC continue to give out both the unique users and total of sold controllers. Keep up the good work.
you know, there's a dude (a irrational one btw) who thinks udraw tablet will outsell move :-D
@think-man
I know that my spelling ist not the best, my whole englisch ist not the best. I´m from Germany and englisch is not my first language. But I think ( I hope) my englisch is good enaugh to argument her :-) .
So, basically, Move has sold 470k in the 1st month (which was corrected to 600k) and now 1.2M in less than 2 months. 2nd month is being better than 1st? I would definitely like to see Move weekly numbers.
what's sell-in? don't you mean ship-in as in the other article?
so right now the ratio is 1:1.5 and you expect it to go to 1:1.8 by christmass? i guess people do buy more controlers arround christmass to play with the familly.
@ binary solo- so basically move is a success?
Please, don't troll people for their spelling and grammar. Not everyone on this site is proficient in English, so a little tolerance wouldn't hurt. Besides there are plenty of native English speakers here who get it wrong a lot, so I'm pretty impressed with the overall level of English proficiency of the non-native speakers here.
OT: yes while for Sony number of Move controllers sold is where their bottom line lives, they will also be concerned about expanding the user base from a long term Move viability perspective. They're expanding the user base at a reasonable rate at present, but I think they are hoping for some of the big guns in 2011 to take things up a notch or 2. User base expansion this year isn't such a huge deal, and Sony have confirmed this by saying Move performance at present is exceeding their expectations. Holidays 2011 it will be important for Move to have a multi-million user base 5 million minimum, 7 million great, 10 million optimum.
Does that mean Sony is about $ 500 Million ahead in revenue that they didn't spend on Marketing? :-D
What's the fuss here?
The article publishes the estimate for total Move controllers sold, as well as estimating the number of Move enabled households. Both are legitimate sets of data to report on, and from the perspective of the long term success of Move it's all about the number of households set up for playing Move. 3rd party developer support will hinge on Move continuing to expand into more households, hence one of the more important metrics is how many starter packs and PS3+Move bundles are sold as these sales directly correlate to the rate of market expansion for Move. Number of standalone controllers sold will, over time, become irrelevant to market expansion because people who owned a PSEye prior to Move release were a pretty smal proportion of total PS3 ownership and PSEye owners are likely to have a very high early adoption rate (like me) . I think headlining with the estmated install base for Move is the most appropriate number to lead with.
I also think average Move controller ownership will quickly rise to 2 per household and get to 3 before the end of next year. Having only one Move controller rapidly becomes severely limiting for dedicated Move games, and for a number of Move optional games. Given Move is meant to facilitate social gaming experiences it almost seems counterproductive for Sony not to have a 2xMove controller starter pack available. They should be able to sell that starter pack for <Kinect in most markets, or, outside USA, include an actual game and price it to match Kinect.
@think-man
I like that he spelled point as "ponit" both times he used it which may suggest that is how he really thinks it is spelled. I'm not a grammar nazi or anything, but he definitely set the bar pretty high for attrocious spelling, grammar, and punctuation all at once.
Wow Move is doing pretty dang good!
@Grandia
Your spelling is shocking, I can bearly make out what your trying to say.
@grandia- I think i Understand what your getting at but I don't believe ylod was as huge as rrod. Honestly I think sony could care less as long as those orders keep coming in..making money is really all that matters to any company.
So since VGS always undertrack PS3, Move sales WW are about 2 Million.
@ Grandia
"...Artikel."
What did you say...?
Xbbjf9s- Becaus the User is the important thing her. Hardware like Kinect, Move ore Xbox 360 and PS3 as a wohle were made for the Games. The more users are ther the more Games could be sold. Thas the point, Hardware on its owne is absolute useless.
If one User bys 100 Move Controllers dont mean that you can sell than 100 Games to ths person. This person going to by only 1 Game than, thas the Ponit.
And you know as good as I do, that microsoft replaced every broken Xbox 360 for free. And the PS3 also had big Problems with Ylod and blu Ray Disk Drive, an there were also many broken Ps3.
very well said Jordahn(replying to your first post)
Grandia- Your not getting it, sony fans are contesting why the onwer is being counted instead of the actual unit (i think). If i buy a move bundle and then two more controllers that's still two controllers bought. If we are going buy owners shouldn't we count x360 sales like that since there was a rather large rrod issue?
The Sonyfanys dont get the Ponit. Its not so complicated to understand this Artikel. Not every sold Move Controller means 1 new Move User. The ratio in the case of move ist near 1:2, means 1 new Move User bought in averaged 2 Move Controllers.
Kinect ist different 1 sold Kinect means 1 new User, no one needs more then one Kinect. Thats a major difference ist clear that you did not understand this Artikel.
nice. looks like move in kinect will compete on the same stage after all?
Grandia, no matter how many more Kinects are sold over Move, I still won't be able to play Heavy Rain with Kinect, and it will not make the crappy Kinect games anymore enjoyable. So piss off with your trolling.
VG Chartz I think you've made a typo check your numbers again.
Guys, give VGChartz a break. At the very lease, they are estimates, and if taken as hard numbers, it's the minimal amount. Better to be conservative than to shoot the moon with Move numbers.
@ioi
Well I know people want to compare Move and Kinect (and Wii) but the reality is that trying to do so in terms of units sold/install base is a bit apples to oranges at the moment IMO, particularly as you're effectively inventing your own definition of what a Move unit is to do so.
But it's your site :) I still like it and I'll say no more as you have my thoughts.
This bull shit is so annoying, Sony even said they had released 1.3 million in europe alone I, this site is pissing me off that it is still undertracking the ps3 by 2-3 million
why keep insist counting owner instead of total number of sold.. don't forget previous PSeye owner don't need any bundle at all just the PSmove itself will be able to play whatever capable PSmove title they want, isn't the estimation missing out all these?
Kinect is going to roll over PS Move. Move has now 2 months after its releas the same Userbase Kinect sold in only 10 days in Amerika and 3 days in Europa. Move has no chance.
Oh dear, considering its only just ahead of Kinect and has been out for several more weeks
@ioi, Reasonable and Kitler53: You guys are all clearly quite knowledgeable and the discussion is helpful, but as @reasonable says, we won't know unless sony tells us. However, the guesses are good, and whether it's 1.3 or 1.6, at this early stage as Kitler53 says, it's only making a small difference.
Maybe we shuold have the discussion in another month, then the figures will be substantively different.
@ ioi - obviously i have no real proof to back up my claim but i'm with reasonable on this one: the attach ratio is likely lower than with other controllers at their launch. i've been trying to buy a second move controller since i launch and i just can't find one anywhere. move bundles yes, not a problem but the the stand alone controller is now where to be found.
anyways, it's not like it really matters. if we dropped your assumed attach ration from 1.6 to say 1.3 that changes the final number to what? 1.3M? eh, whatever.
I think 1.9 should be the main number of the news article, since that is the estimated number of move controllers (the thing with the glowing ball) sold. It's ok to know the estimated number of people who bought them, but I think it's secondary. In the end, if you sold 4 controllers, there are 4 controllers sold, even if they were bought by 2 people.
Im really looking forward to the next line of "move" centric games. Very curious to see how sales continue/change once (I dont want to say better...but better to me atleast) games get released for it.
I know I am personally waiting for more "new" content before I buy one and I am sure there are more people out there like me.
@ioi - thanks for the response. I understand the factors you're using. But with Move launching with a sizable Eyepet install base plus the clear interest from Resident Evil/Heavy Rain fans (and other titles) I feel that assuming normal controller ratios is a bit suspect at this time.
I think (and soon) its likely Move will settle down in terms of likely relationship between the number of invidivual units bought and the actual unique owner install base, but I believe the initial 4 to 6 weeks contains too many other elements not normally present, such as partial install base due to existing Eye sales - via Eyepet, Singstart, LBP, etc.
It seems clear that there is a far higher demand for individual Wands vs the actual bundle a new owner would buy, for example, plus Sony have pushed heavily with the initial titles that you don't need a second controller.
I'm not saying the number is high or low, just that there's more than a neat number of factors around Move launch that complicate feeling sure about standard 1.7 controllers ratio (or something from 1.5 to 2.0 as you state).
My other point - which is clear from many of the comments - is that a lot of people are really not understanding what you're trying to estimate. A lot of people are seeing 1.2 million units sold when of course (and I know you state this) the actual number of units sold is much higher - you're estimating 1.2 million unique users.
The actual title of the article is therefore strictly speaking wrong as it states 1.2 million units worldwide. It should read 1.2 million unique users estimated WW based on sales of 1.9 million units (going by the numbers in the article).
You're also risking confusing people with the comparisons as again I think you need to call out the double level more clearly - i.e 1.1 million Kinect units sold vs 1.9 Move units sold with 1.1 million Kinect users (assuming a straight 1 to 1) vs 1.2 Move users.
I'm very comfortable with the concepts myself - I should be as retail demand forecasting is a discipline of mine - but I see a lot of mixed terminology here and a lot of confused readers judging by the posts. I know its not your fault people aren't getting it - but as I stated before I think you need to more clearly call out the units/users aspect and make sure all titles, etc. are consistent.
For the record I suspect the ratio was lower initially, more like 1.3 to 1.4 but that it will rise soon enough to around 1.5 to 1.7. so I do think the install base is probably a bit higher at this point. I believe this lower ratio is driven from a large number of existing Eye owners getting 1 Wand initially combined with bundle sales to new owners. I think people buying a second or third unit will have a period of lag from launch and that probably in the last couple of weeks more people have been buying additional units than at launch.
I guess we'll never know unless Sony themselves have such data gathered from PS3's connected to the internet.
@oves2splooge
You do know that the Ps Eye was out before the MOVE, right? It was used for games like Eyepet and The Eye of Judgement. I got the latter, so I already had a Ps Eye and I only bought a MOVE controller and Start the Party. I haven't bought Sports Champions yet, because it reminds me too much of wii sports and wii sports resort and I already have a wii. I am sure that there are many others who did the same.
So the Move has really sold close to 2m so far?
I'll take the unique user estimate with a pinch of salt, there are too many moving parts involved in estimating that for me to feel that confident in the numbers. 3 million units sold sounds about right though.
So a decent start and a more even US/Others split that Kinect at this point, which seems to be more US/UK centric in its sales.
Overall - i.e. worldwide - I'm getting the feeling neither is going to kill the other or deliver any kind of upset to established patters - i.e. Move isn't going to swing US towards PS3 and Kinect isn't going to swing EMEAA towards 360.
well, looks like kinect has already matched and therefore about to pass move sales. not bad sales for either but extra good job to kinect.
loves2splooge->
Sports Champions is not bundled in the European Starter Packs.
@Ghutto,do you have nothing better to do than to spew out rubbish? I dont care if you think anything that isnt Nintendo owned fails,just stop putting the same comments in every move or kinect related article.
So there are 1.2 million unique Move-equipped PS3s but only 0.71m copies of Sports Champions (which is bundled with the starter pack). That means almost 500k users got a Move setup but no Sports Champions? That seems odd to me. Think about it. A standalone Move controller is $50 and you need a PS Eye in order to get Move to work (add another $40). Why would you buy a Move and PS Eye standalone when you can get the starter bundle with Sports Champions for just $10 more ($100)? It would only make sense for you to buy your first Move standalone with no Sports Champions if you already owned a PS Eye before Move came out. Maybe that might be it. Perhaps existing PS Eye users were much more likely to try the Move because they already had the camera and only had to pay $50 for the controller?
Fail, sales are so lower than expected like Kinect but this history have a good side, a winner of a revolution in the industry.
And the Winner is....
NINTENDO and your Nintendo Wiimote controls for old mamas and girls. Criticized by Sony and MS and copied by them.
clap clap clap!
Owned... again!
Damn good
Nice.
What would happen if Move had a huge advertising campaign...
Theres that word again " estimate" lets all say it together "estimate"......I estimate by next week the Kinect will have passed the Move......
Mr Estimate
Go PS3! Keep chuggin'!
Go Move Go!
I assume move controllers includes navigation controllers,? But pretty nice numbers overall, in fact strangely similar to total Kinect sales after 1 week... So get a move on! (pun a nice outcome, but not initially intended)
It will be interesting to see if sales pick up once proper games (SOCOM, Sorcery and Killzone) come out for the system, which should attract some more hardcores. Oh, and if Sony started advertising it properly
Nice numbers! Next year will be very interesting seeing how many games will have Move support or even Move required.
This just in, Aaron Greenberg is "LOLing" at Move numbers!
:-P
jk, pretty good sales for Move!!
sell-in = shipped? So over 3m Move controllers shipped and 1.9m sold.
Good start for Move.
GOOD NUMBERS!
