'Rez HD' shatters all records with an incredible 25,000 units sold, while 'Chessmaster' has a solid opening; Boogie Bunnies and Metal Slug 3 continue strong runs.

Wow. Appearently all Xbox 360 owners also owned Sega Dreamcasts. This week, Dreamcast shooter remake "Rez HD" all records we've had since the charts started. In just 3 days, it's already amassed $250,000 in sales, and beaten the the rest of the top-5 3 day debut games combined. Yes, it's that massive.
So what's next in store for Rez HD? Most likely alot more sales. Rez HD is well on it's way to eventually selling 500,000 units as projections would place this high of sales within it's first 18 months of sale.
Chessmaster LIVE also debuted rather strongly, despite selling in Rez HD's shadow. With almost 4,000 units sold, it's likely that a casual-selling chess game, such as CM Live could go on to do very well - even though it's at a $10 price point.
In other notable news, Undertow had a huge number of downloads activated this week. This should be the biggest week, with sales beginning to decend from now on. Expect about another 500,000 before it stops.
While Rez gets all of the fanfare, however, Metal Slug 3 finished it's first month of sale with 63,000 units. Since the charts started, this places it at #2 next to Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, with 88,000 units. However, that record won't last very long, as Rez HD should sell over 100,000 units it's first month.

Strategy - Live implementation. Microsoft mandated that every game, regardless of coding, have some sort of live implementation.
Because of that, there must be online leaderboards, online multiplayer, or something of that nature. Therefore a simple port of coding + an emulator will not surfice. The game must then be recoded to add such features.
$50-100k is merely my estimation.
Microsoft only takes money once the game's been released, and takes roughly 30% of the LTD revenue (on average).
ok, I read an earlier comment and you said it costs 50-100k to port a game to live marketplace,,, Why does it cost so much when hackers do it for free?
I thought microsoft made license money for every unit sold ,not beforehand.
Kai - I noticed that it defaulted to black text coloring. I will change it to white....Or use a grey platinum color.
There's a GREAT article about XBL publishing in one of the game mags, think gamepro. Has anybody tried to use the authority tool, and can provide some feedback?
I think you should change the dark blue color, the readability is bad.
Something cool to try with Rez. Find a jacket with 3 pockets that will fit a 360 controller and turn on the vibration for all of them.
Strategy - Yes. Yes we can. The second Home launches, I'll be seeing what I can do to start gathering PSN profiles and such to get some charts for the PSN.
Also, just an FYI: Rez HD is still doing REALLY REALLY well. I would expect it to hit 45,000-50,000 for the week.
omg, people would rather buy boogie bunnies than over half of all the games on there....
Also, I wish you could track sales of the games on the psn, but I doubt they have gamercards. Could you track trophies in home when it comes out? (if)
you are indeed the fountain of all knowledge.
Keep up the great work
Glory - All you have to do is look at some of the crap games at the low end of the charts (such as Screwjumper, StreetTrace, and others) to realize there's a reason for shovelware: many developers are making money hand over fist, and lesser studios (or bigger ones) want a piece of the pie. Microsoft has said that within 18 months of sale, the average game (mind you, on average) has brought the developer a 156% return on revenue - or their cost of goods + 56% more. That's insane.
The sales do NOT include any sort of DLC. The LTD revenue is merely the sale of the game.
There are some brilliant retruns out there for devs looking at the figures you are quoting. No wonder there are so many new games in the pipeline.
Do your figures take into account the paid for downloadable content for games such as Lumines and Uno. If not, with the additional downloads these games are like cash cows for their devs.
Good first week for rez
Glory - it'll be another week before we can determine what post-free Undertow sales are like. However, one can look at Carcassonne and see that the free period really helped it.
I have no idea how MS can/will handle price drops on the ancient games that no one plays. On one hand, they could re-invigorate sales. On the other, it'd kind of determine that older games should always be cheaper, hampering new classic releases (why buy a $10 Dracula X when SOTN is $5?).
Mummel - remember: Devs make 70% of total estimated revenue. XBLA games are incredibly cheap to make - somewhere around $50k-100k for classic ports, and new games are anywhere from $250k-750k for typical releases.
MS are going to have to have a price drop on some of the slower games at some stage.
How are Undertows sales going now the free downloads have finished?
Cheers
They're actually earning a good bit of cash over XBL, a lot more than I thought!
@mrstickball
@#$^& *(%$^&~ [removes foot from mouth]
my bad, just checked it out could've sworn it was 800P then again i never paid for it [free with vid cam] i'll know better and check nxt time.
can we get a chart like this for the PSN
WOW
300k on one week !
and 25K for Rez .. Nice ..
250k$ on one week is GREAT
I would only produce XLA if I have a company!
erikers - Its very doubtful Rez wound up doing TMNT type numbers. TMNT has sold 425,000 units in about 10 months. Rez projects itself to about the same in 18 months - so I'd think TMNT did around 40,000-45,000.
Krusnik - Uno has always been $5. The Hits program includes Small Arms, Lumnies Live! Marble Blast Ultra, Bankshot Billiards 2, and Zuma. Each of these games have the correct sales and LTD numbers with them.
Silver members still can download trial versions of Arcade games - it's just full releases they get screwed on.
Rez HD is currently above a 90% average rating on Gamerankings.com - although it could be a bit frontloaded, only Screwjumper has had under a 4x multiplier for sales of 3 day opening vs. 1st month. The average for every game we've tracked (minus SWOS) is 5.42.
If that average held true for Rez, we should expect 137,792 units sold first month, and 551,170 for the first 18 months. however I do expect it to be a little less due to Rez being frontloaded (atleast that's my assumption).
Wow that's a lot of sales for a three day old game, seems like the fans were stalking this release. I wonder what numbers its gonna post up after a week on the marketplace. Other games doing well, UNO still selling close to 10K a week awsome, Carbonated Games must be enjoying them selves.
@Mr. Stickball
Nice job on the figures, although there are a few discreprencies. For example wasn't UNO added to the Arcade hitz list after it retailed at $10 for quite some time? I'm well aware its difficult to be accurate but the LTD revenue figures are off a bit. If we're going to guess i'd say its within the 6,250,000 -->10,000,000 range. Again its just an observation.
Very nice for Rez. It is getting great reviews and maybe people are just really enjoying the trial. Remember last we heard from MS they are over 10 million xbox live members regardless of silver or gold they would still have access to the trial etc.
It's pretty odd that Rez would sell that much more than any other of the usual well known games that come out at the same price. I didn't notice any particular hype for the game beyond the occasional hardcore gamers who knew the game was good before.
I wonder if it came anywhere close to TMNT which was the top seller last year I believe. I'd bet it probably did 1/3 of it which is pretty good.
