The VGChartz Gap Charts Monthly Update for June 2010 - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 02 July 2010 / 3,706 Views

Xbox 360 v PS3

Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions as recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together.  The line on each graph represents the gap in the install base (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.

Americas

US

360 lead is 9,410,013

Japan

Japan

PS3 lead is 3,976,202

Others (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia)

Others

PS3 lead is 447,974

Global

360 lead is 4,985,837

HD Consoles (PS3 + 360)  v Wii

For the Wii to reach 50% market share (total install base) the line must drop below zero

Hdwii

HD lead is 3,948,087

360 v PS3

In the Americas the 360 has improved its lead this month especially in the last two weeks since the 360S launched.  There is clearly no stopping the 360 in this battle.  Some big games have come and gone, supply is now back to acceptable levels and yet the 360 still marches on.  This is likely to widen further over the coming weeks and months as the 360S, Halo Reach and Kinect keep the 360 in the minds of the consumer.

A stark contrast in the Others and Japan regions where the PS3 has continued to push on, admittedly this has slowed somewhat but it is still one way traffic in the whole of 2010.  Japan is a done deal in favour of the PS3.  The hard fought Others region continues its swing towards the PS3 and this is where  Microsoft may hope to turn the tide, but it will be very tough for them.

The Global gap chart is now just under 5.0m.  Remember that the gap when the PS3 launched in November 2006 was 5,433,893.  The gap has not only slowed dramatically recently but it has actually turned and increased again during June.

HD v Wii

The Wii performance seems to be settling down after some volatile performance earlier this year perhaps in the face of US supply issues.  However, the level that it has settled at is lower than the combined HD consoles and so the gap continues to grow.  The PS3 performance may have fallen back a little over the most recent months but this will now be offset by increasing 360 numbers.

ale666 yes the wii has more than the 360 or the ps3 but what the chart shows it what it would take to have over 50% of the market for itself. Which it was rather close to pulling off. You say it's not fair but if it had over 50% then you'd just say it has more than the 2 combined.

@Scoobes

This is clearly a hardware analysis chart mate, no software numbers are in sight ;) Although a total software chart would be interesting .

@ ale666

It's somewhat fair if you look at software. The majority of HD games appear on both 360 & PS3 and never appear on Wii and the majority of Wii games are exclusive to Wii. There is just so little to distinguish between the HD consoles software-wise.

2 vs 1 is not really fair game now is it? Sorry brent you need to revise your work here as its incomplete so let me help you out with whats missing.;
WW Ds vs psp = 72.5M Ds ahead
WW Wii vs 360 = 31.7M Wii ahead
WW Wii vs PS3 = 36.7 M Wii ahead

Hope to see a more accurate and complete effort next month, do not take it personally but i think its a fair observation to make between honest people ;)

The 360 is going to be strong throughout this generation. The same is true for PS3. Anyone hoping for one to lose and the other to win will have to wait for the next generation.
