Miyamoto Wants to Make a New Character, AND a New Pikmin Game - News

Yesterday Nintendo held a meeting with their shareholders at their corporate headquarters in Kyoto.  The lucky devils got their own private demonstrations of the 3DS, and they even had a Q&A session with Shigeru Miyamoto.  One of the attendees wrote up the juicy details, and the folks over at andriasang were kind enough to translate the highlights to English for the rest of us.

Most importantly, Miyamoto wants to make a new Pikmin game.  It's been six years since Pikmin 2 came out, and he wants to get a new Pikmin out "quickly."  Speaking of Pikmin, Captain Olimar and his sentient plant pals were Miyamoto's last new characters when the first Pikmin came out nine years ago, and Miyamoto believes it's about time he introduced a fresh new face to the world of gaming.  He hinted that he might do that next year, but pointed out he's pretty busy working on 3DS games at the moment.

Miyamoto also mentioned that he's recently become interested in swimming.  We're not sure if this is a joke or a clue, or both.  It's become a tradition for Miyamoto to take his inspirations from very mundane non-gaming ideas, and to tell the rest of us what they are.  His dog Pikku and his interest in dog breeding led to Nintendogs, his interest in measurements led to Wii Fit, and his interest in gardening led to Pikmin.  He's even told us that the gravity-based platforming of Super Mario Galaxy was inspired by the concept of "inverted hamster balls."  He knows that any new interest he mentions will lead to rampant rumors and speculation, and has played with this idea before when he said he was really interested in cats.  Everybody thought he was joking, because he couldn't really be hinting at a "Nintencats" game, but then at E3 Nintendo actually announced Nintendogs + Cats for the 3DS.  Could this mean Nintendogs + Mermaids, or Nintendogs + Catfish, or maybe Wii Swim with the Vitality Sensor?  Miyamoto has spoken, so now it's time to get those rumor-mills churning.

Well, as long as the swimming doesn't release a Mario platformer (2D or 3D) with all swimming levels, I'll let Miyamoto let his creativity run rampant.
