Xbox Live Arcade Sales Charts - Wk ending 1/19/08 - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 19 January 2008 / 1,759 Views
Arcade Shooter 'Metal Slug 3' leads an insane week where majority of titles are up 400%. Omega 5, Arkadian Warriors, Tron and Sensible World of Soccer also see major gains. However, new puzzle game 'Boogie Bunnies' charts poorly compared to other games.
It was a crazy week. Even as early as Monday, I started seeing strange numerical increases for various games. And by the end of the week, sales are just insane. In the case of Metal Slug, sales are the highest for any full-priced (non discounted, ect) game since we started the charts.
But you must ask: What made the majority of titles increase so highly? I have a few plausible answers, but unless someone from MS can give me a solid answer, I'm in the dark as to the specific cause:
1) Xbox Live is running much more smoothly. The controversy, as well as the better server speeds have increased the rate of XBL purchases to peak this week.
2) Consumers are finally using their Holiday/Christmas point cards to purchase and buy more points.
3) This week, the new Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was featuring a 200 free Microsoft points for those that signed up for Email alerts. This information was then posted on CAG very quickly afterwards, causing the Terminator website to then shut the promotion down, as some users recieved 1,600 and even 2,000 points.
4) In tantem with the XBL server problems correcting themselves, the huge influx of 2 million new XBL users (or a 25% increase) over Christmas, has finally resulted in a major market adjustment of new titles.
5) Mygamercard.net servers, the website that helps out with the gathering of information, have had major updates to their card info. This is also plausible, but would be more of an issue with Microsoft XBL servers rather than MGC.
So take your choice as to why sales are so high, but the raw numbers are staggering. However, Boogie Bunnies did not garner as high sales as the other great games - although it's sales are still fairly decent for a Puzzle-type game. It's debut week of an estimated 3,400 units puts it between 'Word Puzzle' (4,900) and Gripshift (2,400).
Please note: due to some very minor changes in the way I've built the charts, some LTD sales, and total sales are a bit lower. Some were noted, some were not. The reason they changed yet again is due to the fact I've worked out a way to export all the weeks of the charts once we get a website established for cataloging these numbers.

No new XBLA this week, booooo!
Wow , MS3 is doing great ... it seams that people really like SNKs shooter afther all :)
MS3 sales are definately a huge turnaround for sales. I am glad the game is doing well. Omega 5 is also doing well.
And from what I'm seeing, Boogie Bunnies sales is picking up a bit. Im really wondering if the fact that MS has "fixed" the XBL service has enabled a metric ton of new users to start downloading content, or what exactly has sparked the sales, because as far as I've seen, sales haven't slowed much- MS3 and Omega 5 both sold somewhere around 2,000 units each between Saturday and Sunday, and will both reach ~10,000 units for next week if things hold.
As for movie and TV figures - MS does release some information, but it's based only on the XBL broswer, and just gives a "top downloaded" ranking from the most recent movies and such....Which really isn't anything to go off of.
IMO, I would think that DLC + Movies and ect items probably are close to the LTD numbers of XBLA games. I'll post up the DLC figures now for a bonus.
Metal Slug 3 - Nice!!
wow 395k xbla games sold this weak, very impresive.
Wow! A huge week.
Amazing sales for Metal Slug and Omega 5
It is going to be interesting to she how many people take up the free Undertow download this week, then to see if the sales pick up like Carcassone did after the free download.
It is a pitty MS still do not see fit to giving us in the UK Aegis Wing and Yaris'
I wonder how long before MS reduce the price of some of the slower selling games
Do they release the movie and tv download figures?
Life to date
What does LTD stand for?
Wow... Uno is the first game people have to purchase to reach 1 million!
XBLA is becoming quite the force. Games appear every week and they all just seem to keep on selling...
3 Million on one week !
Great
every site put Pac Man as one of the best game in 07
hope to see it sell very well
Wow ... I am impressed. I didn't realize that MS made over $120M off LIVE. Wow. Do they have numbers for Fable and other original Xbox titles on LIVE?
Excellent work, it should be included in the regular weekly charts of VGC!
Xbox 360 and XBL both have a bigger user base than that off the PS3/PSN. So I don't think it would be too fair of a comparison just yet.
nice work,i hope they do the same about the PSN,im exited to compare it with the xbox live
