Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions as recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together. The line on each graph represents the gap in the install base in millions (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.
Americas

360 Lead is 9,051,817
Japan

PS3 Lead is 3,494,384

The first monthly update of 2010 and the last that will show the effect of the holiday sales numbers. Next month volatility should reduce as the lower sales of the quiet period take over. These charts are right up to date and take into account recent sales announcements and financial reporting.
In the Americas the 360 has maintained its lead in the face of onslaught from the PS3 Slim. Having said that the PS3 has been pretty much matching the 360 over recent weeks and there is somewhat of a stalemate at the moment. It looks likely that the 360 will slightly outsell the PS3 here though, certainly in the near future.
Japan was always going to be dominated by the PS3 in the HD battle. Despite a relatively slow start by the PS3 there it has taken off and is currently outselling the 360 by 10:1. Microsoft continue to try and make a difference there with their recent campaign of three apparent new Japanese focused games. The first was announced as the Monster Hunter MMO, it is unlikely to make much difference though.
In Others the excellent sales since the Slim launched and the holiday boost has helped push the PS3 very close to the 360. The PS3 is currently outperforming the 360 and will catch the 360 within a few months if things continue this way.
The Global gap chart is just under 5.9m. Still some way to go before the PS3 gets the gap back to where it was when the PS3 launched.
The gap between the Wii and the HD twins is virtually flat this month. However, the Wii is suddenly looking like it may have a chance of pushing that little bit closer to the 50% market share point, perhaps even surpassing it at some point...?

Looking at last months it looks like 360 outsold its expectations!!!!
Great Job
@hmduong- I was thinking the same thing
here's the link to last month's gap charts:

I remember in last month's gap charts, the PS3 had already overtaken the 360 in Others region and the global 360 lead was less than it was at PS3 launch. How come there's no explanation of the sudden changes?
Kowenicki no longer in the "Wii can never reach 50% marketshare" camp?
That graph certainly does not make it look unlikely, especially when you consider that it's matching PS360 while it has shortages in the U.S.
"perhaps even surpassing it at some point...?"
I had this "Find out in the next episode" movie effect in my mind.
Anyway, can you clear up, since I remember around month ago reading that Ps3 is ahead in others..I saw there was some adjustments tho.
The Wii's December spike was awesome!
