Xbox Live Arcade Sales Chart Estimates - Wk. Ending 11/28/07 - News

Another week of numbers. Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe debuts this week to a strong showing.
Remember: these charts are only [b]really[/b] rough estimates. I had the great fortune of a XBLA publisher PM me last week, and reminded me to let everyone know these are estimates. He has actual access to the numbers, and stated I was/am off on many numbers.
I have updated and fixed numbers for Screwjumper and Shrek-N-Roll. If anyone checks Major Nelson, I was spot-on with many of my higher end numbers (ie, Switchball, Undertow, ect), but incredibly off on both titles. I have figured out a few ways of increasing
my ability to estimate these numbers, and they're fixed.
Having said this, I still have a long, long road ahead of me to perfect these charts. They always will be estimates, but I have a few ideas on making the charts alot more accurate. Overall sales for the Arcade are up around 20%, taking out free download "Carcassonne". Even though there was a black Friday, and downloads are increasing, it's certainly not at the pace of retail sales.
Asteroids Deluxe has a pretty strong opening for the week. Rough estimates put it at the low-3000's for just above 3 days. Expect strong sales through the coming weeks.
Overall, the top-10 hasn't changed much, save working on Screwjumper! and Shrek-N-Roll. Sales on the lower end games (ie, the bottom 10) are alot lower than normal. Scramble last week had 3 or 4x the sales, and are now barely registering.
In the coming weeks, expect some changeup in the charts. If you check the FAQ, you'll find out I typically use achievements to sort out demo usage. However, between the new update that forces out trials, and some other work I've been doing, I plan on using MGC's total userbase to calculate sales as well. This should greatly increase the accuracy.

HomerRamone - The thing about Major Nelson's charts is the fact that he covers a totally different period than I do. Nelson tracks Tuesday-Tuesday now, and I track Saturday-Saturday. So a new release, such as Asteroids, has nearly 7 days to track. Whereas these charts are half of that.
Had I tracked Asteroids simiarly, my numbers would be very, very similar to his as well.
This list just proves what a load of tosh Major Nelsons charts really are !
His 'Top Arcade Titles (Full Versions)' chart shows Asteroids as the #1 game followed by sonic.
Or maybe 11K people bought undertow and just didnt play it :-)

sinha - And I'm the exact same way. I have litterally 0 games that show up on the leaderboards.
Even worse than that, I've uploaded scores that have been purged as well.
Fish, for games that have recently debuted, I use a strong weighted system for sales. Over the next few weeks, the weighting I use will lower, and will average out more for the game.
But again, I have along way to go on sales numbers. It could indeed be that I'm too high on games, and if that's the case, I will go and re-do my numbers. But again, this is all a beta test. I've been off, and also on, with Major Nelson statistics. It's a very, very simple thing of editing my numbers if they're too high. It's vastly more difficult if I'm consistently off when it comes to a week-to-week change in sales positioning.
I can agree that there may be some users missing from the leaderboards, but not anywhere near enough to explain the numbers.
To use Undertow as an example again. The difference between the 6k users in the leader boards as the 18k estimated here is huge. I can accept there might be +/- 3k users or so which would make a reasonable estimation, but 12k is miles off.

fishcakes: I own a few XBLA games that I don't show up on the leadeboards for. Two recent examples: E4 and Switchball.
But there are always a lot less people on the leaderboards. Using your example, if MGC only covers 1.6m users that makes the numbers even more distorted. So much so, that its difficult to look at the numbers even as estimates.
If there are 10million users and MGC is only a portion of that and still shows vastly inflated user numbers, then I would say MGC's methods are completely wrong.
The simple test has to be the leaderboards. If you play the game and are online, you will post a score. Same for everybody who plays the game at least once. Go to the leaderboards of any of the games in the list, and check the total users. You will find the numbers are far lower.
Not trying to be a pain. I want to know the accurate numbers as much as the next man... but these numbers so far are very off. Microsoft has made nowhere near the estimates shown.
Fishcakes - I understand. Like I said, these are estimates. MGC gives us a way to estimate alot of games. There are plenty I know I'm off on, and will have to do alot more to work on numbers for.
Thats why I said these are really, really rough estimates. As for leaderboards accuracy, I am sure there's alot truth to many of them, but at the same time, MGC covers everything. If they say that a game has 300,000 people that have unlocked achievements (such as Uno), and only cover 1.6m total X360 users, wouldn't you think that there are more people than that on the leadarboard?

Looking at the leaderboards on any of these games shows much lower numbers than stated here.
For example, Undertow has 6000-ish users with scores on the leaderboards. I dont know where you got 11k this week with 18k in total. Are you suggesting that 12k users have yet to play the game or register a highscore?
The same goes for all my XBLA games. These numbers are on average double what they should be and in many cases much more off.
Mygamercard is NOT an accurate way to estimate XBLA sales.

He was ranting about how great Space Giraffe was, and how everyone was so stupid for buying Frogger over his game.
XBLA titles are accessible. Old favorites like Golden Axe, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 have lots of nostalga value. Combine them with the fact that you can buy what once was a $50 cart for $5, and it's a steal.
Undertow is doing remarkably well, and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. However, I would anticipate Screwjumper! to start slowing down. All indications point to it starting to drop soon.
We have a good bevy of strong titles for the rest of the year, that should be interesting to see how they fare.
About PacMan CE - Remember, it's nearly 6 months old, and it's still charting near the top-10 after taking out the freebies. That's pretty good. It's at $1.6m revenue, and adding roughly $30,000 a week to that total. Not bad. Catan on the other hand is way behind, but any game that still move $10k/wk is going to continue to do well.
of course downloads won't increase as much. many 360 being bought now will be cristmas gifts and therefore users wonl't be downloading till after then. I would expect the highest download period to be the last week in december/first week in january.
It seams that downloadable games are going pretty well ... at leats they make pure profit :)

It's good to see Undertow and Switchball continuing to do well. I'm always disappointed sales of Catan and Pac-Man CE are not higher... Also I have thought Exit would do better, it's doing so much worse than junk like Screwjumper, Shrek'N'Roll and Word Puzzle.
I really love the easy access to some old classics like Frogger, Golden Axe, or Prince of Persia which are well worth the small fee.
Makes me even more anxious for the Xbox Originals to become available this coming week. Changing disks can be a pain, (i.e. finding them) and having the 360 compatable versions on my hard drive or streamed on demand will be perfect.
^And there aren't a huge number of releases every week.
Its different.....I do one every week.
The issue is that sales are very similar each week - most games have really long legs.
Haven't I already seen something like this a few days ago or is this different?
