The VGChartz Gap Charts Weekly Update to 23rd January 2010 - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 01 February 2010 / 2,649 ViewsXbox 360 v PS3
Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions as recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together. The line on each graph represents the gap in the install base in millions (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.
Americas
Japan
Others (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia
Global
HD Consoles (360 + PS3) vs Wii
For the Wii to reach 50% market share the graph line must drop below zero
Commentary
The gap charts will now be a weekly feature.
The format will be slightly different in that the weekly update will not have a full commentary. There may be a few words and comments added when appropriate but a full analysis of the month will appear in the final week of each month.
These charts are right up to date as 23rd January 2010.

Hmm, well I guess I can understand that. I would be so happy to see how bad the Wii is beating the other guys. But y'all are right... except for this last guy. I mean, console wars is just that, console wars. Not software wars. Even if they did do a software thing, you will still see Wii on top, then probably 360 and then PS3. Not much change, there.
What do hardware sales actually mean in of themselves? Are they indicative of the total amount of games sold per system? Do hardware sales by themselves with no charts on weekly or monthly software sales per system show who is winning the trumped up "console wars?" Or are they an impulse buy from a complete non-gamer who will buy a Wii and Wii Sports Resort during the Holidays and buy nothing else throughout the year?
Weekly and monthly reporting hardware sales without weekly and monthly is sophomoric at best equivalent to a two tier research project where the other equivalent tier (software in this case) is totally ignored.
All of us would appreciate weekly and/or monthly software sales posts that shows the charts of which system is selling the most games per month.
You guys do it during the holiday season. Please keep it up after Christmas. Thanks.
i think the Asia stats are very wrong, 360 n wii piracy are very high.
@ LinKing. Gap charts are only interesting when there is actually something reasonably coompetive happening. I think there is probably some sense in haviong a PS3 vs Wii gap chart for Japan, given PS3 vs Wii in Japan is now a lot like PS3 vs 360 has been in the USA, with PS3 being more competetive on a weekly basis than it has been historically (What you think kowen?).
Wii vs individual consoles outside Japan is boring from a gap charts perspective. There is simply nothing competetive happening, so the only purpose for having one would be to give Wii fans another avenue to gloat over Wii supremacy. I get my fill of "Nintendomination" from the weekly sales charts thanks very much. As it is if Wii permanently cracks 50% market share (which is considerably more possible than I would have said only 1 week ago) there will be no end of "I told you so" coming from certain quarters. Isn't that enough gloatage potential for you?
Maybe if something happend with PS3 or 360 to sky rocket their sales to close to or above Wii globalluy then putting in a Wii vs individual console gap chart would be worthwhile.
@ PS3FTWLUF
Adjustments do suck. But oh well, part of life. But not to worry, it'll probably be jsut a few more months and PS3 will be back on top in Europe.
thanks man keep it up
@ LinKing "I know that there is almost no competition, "
You answered your own question ...
I still don't think anyone has answered my question that I've been asking on all of these articles: Why don't they compare Wii with each individual console as they do with PS3 and 360? I mean, I know that there is almost no competition, but it only seems fair to do equal comparison. And I also think that y'all should use the same scale on each graph (or at least on each group of graphs); at first glance, it can be a little misleading.
But, I don't want to complain so much. Excellent work, guys, and thanks for the now-weekly updates on this stuff. Makes for good reading. Go Nintendo!
The recent adjustments have made the HD vs Wii chart look dramatically different.
PS3FTWLUF: keep up with vgchartz!
Nice to see this as a weekly feature. Will be very interesting to follow in the coming months. 360 back on top in europe after adjustments, but PS3 should slowly catch up.
Also anything but an increasing lead for HD vs Wii during spring would be very surprising.
What??? like 3 weeks ago PS3 was in lead in Europe? was i dreaming... ?? and PS3 still selling more in europe than xbox360... that's bull**** anyway!! ....
Now that these articles will be released weekly I will read them with even greater pleasure.
