The VGChartz Gap Charts - Dec 2009 Edition - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 10 January 2010 / 5,371 Views

Xbox 360 v PS3

Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions as recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together.  The line on each graph represents the gap in the install base in millions (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.

Americas

DEC US

Japan

DEC Japan

Others (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia)

HD Consoles (360 + PS3) vs Wii

For the Wii to reach 50% market share the graph line must drop below zero

Commentary

The final gap charts of 2009 and the launch of the PS3 Slim seems to have confirmed a few things that perhaps we already knew.

In the Americas, a region heavily influenced of course by the US market, the picture has hardly changed.  Indeed the gap is now the biggest it has ever been at comfortably over 9.1 million and around 300k larger than it was the day the Slim launched.  The 360 grip on the HD gaming audience in the US is tight.  The 360 has once again been outselling the PS3 on a weekly basis for some weeks now and the gap will likely increase this year with tweaking of price and model variations.... not forgetting the much hyped Natal.

Japan was always going to be dominated by the PS3 in the HD battle.  Despite a relatively slow start by the PS3 there it has now taken off since the launch of the Slim to increase the gap by a further 1 million to 3.35m.  There is simply nothing that the 360 can do to compete on the same level.

The Others gap chart looks different doesn't it?  That is because it is now a "PS3 lead" chart for the first time.  The excellent sales since the Slim launched and holiday boost has helped push the PS3 beyond the 360 for the first time.  This has been threatening to happen for what seems like a very long time now.  It is surprising it has taken this long for the PS3 to overtake the 360 in a region where Sony has historically swept all before it.  The PS3 may now go from strength to strength here and it is difficult to see why it will not unless Microsoft has somehting up its sleeve to reverse the trend once again.

The global gap chart is now 5.55m, this is 100k more than the gap was when the PS3 launched.  So, in other words, the PS3 and the 360 have had almost identical sales since the PS3 launched.... to be precise their total sales over the last 3 years are within 0.3% of each other.

The gap between the Wii and the HD twins dropped this month, a reflection of the massive holiday sales the Wii has managed to post.  However, despite this record month for the Wii the gap did not drop too much, but at least the trend is back in favour of the Wii.  I still doubt its ability to be able to get to the 50% total market share figure that would mean literal domination.

as long as the PS3 is not moved with pirated software and remains unhacked it will still stay on third place..... unless a flood of millions of legitimate software moves it

@Linking
the graphs are not about let's show how successful each console is. These are the two "races" people are interested in. Nobody cares about how well the Wii has done against the PS3 because it's not even a race, it's not even close. So nobody cares(except for maybe you and a few others) about how the Wii stacks up against a single HD console. If you are so interested in that then the raw numbers are right there on the site why don't you make the graphs and submit them to the site?

The comments are a little more feisty now compared with the months of yore.

The children of my Girlfriend now received a Wii from their father. We played once since X-mas, with the PS3 I played almost every day. It is just an overestimated piece of s**t, I think in most households, it is just consuming power. After 30 min of playing you have done everything, the games are 5 min fun, then just boring...

Why is it that the Wii is compared to the two systems combined, rather than one versus the other? The other systems get to go head to head, while Wii has to go head to 2-heads.

I think that the Wii's success is severely understated in the way it is presented in the single graph. What's all this "the Wii needs to get to 50% market share"? Let's take a look at it's market share right now, and let's look at its individual comparison with each of the other consoles. It seems only fair to do so, really. Unless you want to include the DS with the Wii vs. HD twins.

Maybe I just need an explanation, please?

imo whats gonna be cool to see is how similar PS3's lin in worldwide will be now

360 had a STEEP rise then a flat line

will PS3 have a steeper line?!

The comments after the graphs seem to be dominated by one word. :P

Others chart looks weird, too.

Re the last sentance: I think this year (2010) will be the year that determines whether Wii can get over 50% LTD market share. Wii got itself a huge holiday boost having it's best holidays yet, but December 2009 was no where near the best month in terms of change in market share for Wii. Once we see the sales pattern for the first half of 2010 I think we'll be able to say with confidence whether Wii will top 50%. I don't think it will.

This has been the best holiday period yet for PS3 vs 360 in the Americas. Looking at the past 3 holidays 360 made nearly all of it's gains against PS3 in the October-December period. This time round it only managed a small improvement in its lead. 2010 will be an interesting year with weekly sales see-sawing between 360 and PS3 depending on game releases, retailer specials etc. 360 should still be ahead most weeks and in weeks where nothing special is happening. I see the 360 lead over PS3 creeping up, but I doubt it will get above 10 million.

@Kowenicki

No what I am saying is, in business it's not about what you did 3 years ago. It's about what have you done for me lately!! 360 is getting hammered right now by the PS3. As far as my statistics goes, it's very simple logic. PS3 has been outselling the 360 by 150,000 units a week. Multiply that X4 and that is 600,000 units a month. Multiply that X12 and that is 7.2 million by the end of the year. Sure 360 will have a rpice drop by spring or whatever, but they will only end up running into a PS3 price by August of this year. No matter how you look at it, the only war 360 has won is America. And that won't happen in the next console cycle..........

c0rd (on 10 January 2010)

The 360 doesn't sell in America "because it's cheap." Just look at the top selling software in America, it tells the whole story.

The Wii v HD graph will probably hover around 3-4mil for a while.

NicholasCage (on 10 January 2010)

There's a lot of typos in the commentary.

OT: I really don't think PS3 will gain anymore ground in America. Breaking even will matter to Japan and Europe.

On the HD vs Wii Chart...

AUG-DEC 07 and AUG-DEC 09 look very similiar to me.

If this is a good year for the Wii (compared to other years for the Wii) then that downward trend throughout 08 may be repeated in 10.

Best Wii line up yet + vitality sensor make this a possibility.

Lol @ ''not forgetting the much hyped Natal''.

To be honest 3D is more hyped right now than all motion controls combined. Wouldn't suprise me if 3D moved more PS3's than Natal moves 360's.

Well weird thing that Ps3 got Xbox 360 already...Since late Ps3 release and such...
I can't belive Xbox 360 is doing so well in America...Well...Its cheap?

Here is my favorite line. ((((((((((((((The global gap chart is now 5.55m, this is 100k more than the gap was when the PS3 launched. This doesn't make any sense. You have to look at the last 4 months and see how much the PS3 has outsold the 360. Microsoft needs a price drop fast or it will lose it's global led by sept 2010 for sure.

  • 0
Boberman (on 10 January 2010)

@Globox

360 isn't going to pass the Wii. So it won't win America(since you did count the wii when ranking the PS3).

  • 0
Aidman (on 10 January 2010)

the Wii is the console that Nintendo were expected just to surpass the gamecube at first and look at the sales now even Nintendo didn't imagine their console will end now with 100 Millions by the end of 2011 no doubt in that.

When it is all said and done PS3 will be 2nd, 360 3rd place, PS3 will win WW BUT 360 will win in USA this gen, that is how i see it. For MS that would be considered major succes

Chairman-Mao says:
The 360's global lead over PS3 is dropping as fast as Nortel stock in the early 2000's.

And will go up like gold since 2000 after Natal launch-maybe:P

What's with the constant Wii vs HD systems?
I don't see the point of picking out one particular feature of two consoles and comparing them against one(s) that don't have it.

most devs see PS360 as ONE platform.

This has always been my favorite VGC feature. 2 questions for you all.

  1. What does Sony have to do to gain marketshare in the US?
2 What does Microsoft have to do to gain marketshare in Others?

    Thanks!

The game developers must be happy with PS3 and X360 having a similar userbase: you essentially sell your multiplatform title twice.

Notice where the release of Mario Kart Wii is on that HD vs Wii gap chart. The point of release of NSMB will look like that after a few months. :)

Or any of the other previous generations Klaudkil. When Nintendo held 100% of the handheld market for 15 years or when Nintendo held most of the market during the SNES and NES generations.

"don't ban me" You could try to be a little more objective next time.

  • 0
Gilgamesh (on 10 January 2010)

I was waiting for this one :)

@Klaudkil, the PS2 had around 70% of the market share (rough estimate)

  • 0
darthdevidem01 (on 10 January 2010)

with ps3 & 360 both looking like they will do around 70 million, it begs the questio, will the 2nd & 3rd place consoles in gens moving on always be this massively successful?

  • 0
klaudkil (on 10 January 2010)

in other words... wii will never be as dominating as the ps2 did in uts time.. id had more then 50% market share.... but ow well. and noo dont ban me i dont want to start flamewars etc... juts me pointing out

  • 0
TheConduit (on 10 January 2010)

PS3 and 360 sales are gonna look very similar by the end of 2010 in terms of consoles and games .
