Xbox 360 v PS3

Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions as recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together.  The line on each graph represents the gap in install base in millions (sales through to consumers), and the title indicats which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.

HD Consoles (360 + PS3) vs Wii

For the Wii to reach 50% market share the graph line must drop below zero

Commentary

The PS3 slim is in full effect for the first time on this months gap charts.

The turnaround in Others and the sustained high sales in Japan have caused a marked difference to the Global chart, pretty much a mirror image of October 2008 following the 360 price cut.

The effect is less dramatic in the Americas and here it looks as though the 360 will likely hang on to a substantial lead.  Of course we also saw a price cut for the 360 and that will have softened the blow from the PS3 in the 360 home territory.

Others is a different story and here things could look very different after the christmas period if September sales are replicated and amplified through the holiday period.

The gap between the Wii and the HD twins increased massively this month, a combination of the trending down of the Wii, the surge in PS3 sales and a solid 360 performance.

And now we have a Wii price cut coming.  Will this change things around and offer another twist to a volatile last 12 months?  Certainly next months gap charts will be every bit as interesting as the price cut from the Wii kicks in and the PS3 steadies.

Hey kowenicki: Did you happen to notice what happened on the Europe only (without Others) chart on Sept 27?

@z101

Wow you're so wrong if you think the Wii has a better lineup of games than the PS3 and the 360 for 2010.

PS3:
Bayonetta
Red Dead Redemption
MAG
Max Payne 3
ModNation Racers
Bioshock 2
Dante's Inferno
Heavy Rain
Lost Planet 2
Aliens VS Predators
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Nier
Crysis 2
Dead Rising 2
Gran Turismo 5
Final Fantasy XIII
God of War 3
White Knight Chronicles
The Last Guardian
Brink
Alpha Protocol
I Am Alive
Resonance of Fate
The Agency
Rage
Fallout: New Vegas
DC Universe Online
Lord of Shadows
WarDevil

And there's just so many more...

"best console 2009/2010! have the best game lineUp"

I think the Wii lineup is by far better for 2010 and even for 2009 than the PS3 or the Xbox360-Lineup.

2009 many big Franchises:

  • New Super Mario Bros
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
  • Dead Space: Extraction
  • Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex
  • Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers
  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (in Europe)
  • Wii Fit Plus
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade
  • Rabbids Go Home
  • Tales of Graces (in Japan, hopefully 2010 in US/EU)
  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars
    and many more ...

    2010:

  • Metroid: Other M
  • Mario Galaxy 2
  • Endless Ocean 2
  • Red Steel 2
  • No More Heroes 2
  • Sin & Punishment 2
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • Samurai Warriors 3
and many more ... (Zelda?, Pikmin 3, Starfox?)

Also with UK growing in gaming power when is it going to get a seperate chart?

The only "Must Have" on your list is GT5... other games are niche with Uncharted having the best chance of busting into the more "Must Have" level of 5 million... I wonder how Heavy Rain will sell compared to it's multi platform predecessor(spiritually speaking) Indigo Prophecies as I really like the Dev team that's working on the game. The thing that suprises me most is that the PS3 didn't cut into the 360's numbers... how does this effect predictions for the holiday season?

Good month for PS3! I'm sure that Sony will close the gap even more with the upcoming exclusive titles like Uncharted 2 (MUST HAVE for every PS3 owner!), Gran Turismo 5, GOW 3 (another MUST HAVE title), Heavy Rain, etc.

Although X360 has also its interesting exclusives, I think they are less appealing than these for PS3...

360 owns NA for HD. Others my go to Sony for HD. Let's face it 360 never had a chance for HD in Japan. Wii still rules them all though.

Very nice seeing how Xbox360 Elite got a 100$ price cut and now a 50 Dollar rebate, and 360 has been the cheapest console for a while (well till last week) And had a 18 month head start and still only barley managed to Out sell PS3 in the US last week. :) but thats fine PS3 has way too many great games coming out for me to care

ps3 doing good so far but they would do a whole lot better in sales if they give the people what they want, such as bringing the white and silver ps3 to the U.S if they would bring colored ps3's to the U.S for christmas i think they would see a huge increase in sales, cause people like different colored systems, along with some bundles

Xander the 360 elite got a $100 price cut and a $50 cut in rebate plus HALO ODST thats why it outsold the PS3, in the americas.. barely. Once Uncharted 2 is out, heck by next week I expect the PS3 to be on par or above 360 in america. The wii is the questionable one, I sense a nice boost in the U.S, a slight boost in OTHERS, and a very small boost in japan based on some data ive seen..

I'm not sure why they did an XBox 360 vs PS3 in Japan. That was never going to be close. They should do a Wii vs PS3, as this is the only country the PS3 has a chance to catch the Wii this generation. They aren't going to catch the Wii or XBox 360 in the U.S. that's for sure. Xbox 360 is already outselling the PS3 Slim in the U.S. just after a few weeks. Wait until the holidays and the Halo ODST/Halo 3 and MW2 bundles get released. Sales are going to start to pick up this month.

Also Microsoft in US is very caring of the clients especially with extended warranties and console returns. Doesn't work as well here in Malta (Europe).

XBox might also better cater for the tastes of NA with FPS which might be less popular in US and Japan. With regards to games library PS3's does seem more varied to me.

@Talyis... the reason that the 360 has led the HD race in the US so far this gen is not just because it's an "American" brand (that has almost nothing to do with it), but the simple fact that the 360 has had the bigger software library with better 3rd party support and more big exclusive or timed exclusive titles up to this point... which is the same reason the PS1 and PS2 led the previous 2 generations here in America. Not to mention the fact that the 360 also has the most robust online experience of the three consoles (although PSN is definitely catching up to XBL finally.)

If American gamers went solely by brand loyalty and nothing else, then SEGA and Atari would still be in business!

I only wish those charts were done with a good chart software like SwiffChart, I don't understand why VGC uses "amateur" softwares for their charts... anyway, I like this article and am always wanting forward to read the next one!

UC2 shd feed the western PS3 audiences and FF13 japan for the rest of the year... I think the PS3-360 gap shd shorten by another 300-500k units by the end of the year.

Looking at the 360 v PS3 world wide graph it seems the PS3 price cut has had a much larger effect than that of the 360 last year (i.e the decrease from august to september 09 was greater than the total increase from august to october 08 when referring to the 360's lead). It will be interesting to see if that trend continues over the holidays when the 360 did the most damage last year.
