The VGChartz Gap Charts - August 2009 Edition - News

Xbox 360 v PS3

Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions as recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together.  The line on each graph represents the gap in install base in millions (sales through to consumers), and the title indicats which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.

HD Consoles (360 + PS3) vs Wii

For the Wii to reach 50% market share the graph line must drop below zero

august hd v wii

No summary for each region this month as August has been unusual.  The 360 has pushed on in each region, even pulling the lead back in Japan a little, due entirely to a drop in demand for the PS3.

The reason for the drop in PS3 sales?  The worst kept secret in gaming history, the PS3 Slim and price cut.

VGChartz data for the last week of August shows us the PS3 has increased its sales due to the price cut and limited supply of early release Slim models.  However, the same data also shows an increase in 360 sales due to the price cuts for the 360 range.

It should be noted that the price cut for the PS3 in Others is not as generous as the price cut in Americas.  However, Japan will likely go crazy for the Slim model, nobody likes a re-model, re-launch more than the Japanese.

Next month the PS3 will surely have its best month for some time and will eat into the 360 lead, but by how much? Will it be a sustained increase for the PS3 or a short lived surge?

The Wii moved back toward 50% market share but again this was skewed due to a drop in demand for both HD models following the rumours of price cuts and the PS3 slim.  The gap will widen in favour of the HD twins next month as both enjoy good increases in sales through September.

wii's lead over the HD twins seems to be slowing down since the beginning of this year. Wii will probably settle down comfortably at 45% market share..

The Wii NEEDS a price cut

They have had a good run but with the weak lineup this year so far and the low prices of the other consoles its starting to get absurd

"iWarMachine says:
it's almost a fact that ps3 will lead in europe when this year ends."

this was said to no end in summer 08 just so you know

it's almost a fact that ps3 will lead in europe when this year ends.
though the gap in the americas won't have a significant move, maybe 2 or 3 million less with a 100% of optimism.
japan it's another story, of course nintendo and sony will keep leading there.

The downs and then ups right before a new SKU launch are always misleading. Part of the surge of the new PS3 model will be those folks who were about to buy a system but heard of the price cut and held off a few weeks (or more). It's hard to say that a price cut increased the baseline a specific amount, unless you go back far enough to the point where the rumors because more less accepted truth. My guess is that since both HD systems dropped their prices, and the Wii is still $50 cheaper, that the market as a whole won't change significantly.

You can see where the price cuts for the respective systems had their impact in the Wii graph.

In 07 PS3 dropped to $400 and the 360 released the much cheaper arcade, large gain in HD lead that holiday.

in 08 360 got it's price cut and there was a small blip in the graph, but then had a drastic decrease due to Nintendo shipping tons for Black Friday, then shallowed out again in December once again to supply constraints.

with both PS3 and 360 price cuts this holiday. I predict we will see another hump much like in 07, but not as large (since Wii was still supply constrained then). and if we go by the trend shown in this graph, it won't be until mid 09 where Wii begins to outsell the HD twins combined again.

Just a couple more of those sharp drops on the last chart, and Wii is at 50%!

Oh I thought the Wii initially had a monster market share (about 70%) and have been losing it since launch and being flat in the past few months around 50%

I need more Vgchartstudy.
