The VGChartz Gap Charts - July 2009 Edition - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 06 August 2009 / 3,719 ViewsXbox 360 v Playstation 3
Here we have three charts representative of the three main regions recorded by VGChartz, and a global chart which brings all of the data together. The line on each graph represents the gap in install base in millions (sales through to consumers), and the title indicates which console is in the lead in the particular region covered.
Americas

The 360 moves further ahead this month with the PS3 sales slowing further in this region. This is not going to change unless something dramatic takes place. The PS3 price cut and slim are heavily rumoured and now seem almost inevitable. Maybe the introduction of a slim version of the Sony machine coupled with a reduction in the price can prevent the gap passing 9 million in the Americas by the end of August?
Japan

360 sales have dropped during July in Japan and need a boost from somewhere if they are to halt the slide back to the dismal levels not seen since 2008, currently it is still managing to stay at more than double those poor levels but how can this be maintained? The PS3 has also fallen back in Japan as a result of the Wii dominance in July. However there is at least some light at the end of the tunnel for the PS3 with some potential hardware moving software releases possible this year.
Others (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia)

The real battleground. Price is the determining factor here and it seems that only price can tip the balance in the favour of the PS3. Will a price cut push more people toward the PS3 or will the perpetual lower pricepoint of the 360 continue to steal its sales? We should know quite soon and there is every chance that this chart could look very different as the year progresses.
Global

Bringing all of the data together and we can see how the price cut in August of 2008 helped the 360 move swiftly and significantly ahead of the PS3. The gap since the launch of the PS3 has now grown by nearly 3 million. However the graph illustrates how quickly fortunes can change.
HD Consoles (Xbox 360 + Playstation 3) vs Wii

A very significant turnaround this month... Wii Sports Resort does the job and helps turn the tide back in the favour of the Wii. This will likely continue througn August as the Wii gets a continued boost from Monster Hunter and Wii Sports Resort. If the graph line drops below zero then the Wii has achieved a total market share by install base of more than 50%.

This is what I like best about VGchartz :)
Straight to the point and made simple.
very nice chartz.
I knew others was crazy, but damn!
I want to see a wii fit vs ps3 chart i can't remember the last time i saw the ps3 out sell wii fit in a week, this week wii fit out sold it by almost 50, 000 units.
Yeah I think you should mix this up a bit each month.
eg do the Worldwide chart for PS3 vs 360, PS3 vs. Wii, 360 vs. Wii as well as HD vs. Wii.... then do a couple of additional charts changing what they are each month. (1 month do the PS3 vs. 360 regionals... next month something else)
With all this talk of a coming PS3 pricecut, and the fact that price is king in Europe, doesn't everything still point back to what Nintendo has know all along? Price is king EVERYWHERE, and always will be. MS has caught on with competitive pricing, but Sony has been extremely slow to adapt. Given that Nintendo could cut their price $100 easily if need be, it makes you wonder if a trend reversal is even plausible at this late stage of the game. A $150 Wii would be hard to counter. I think by 2012 we could see a $99-129 Wii quite possibly, at the end of its lifecycle. The Gamecube was going for $99 only 3 years into it's lifecycle, and that's what kept the HW sales going after it was already clear that it lost the war. Despite Nintendo's current rhetoric, they're not afraid of slashing prices to keep market share, when the time comes.
@DKII
How about a The Conduit vs PS3 chart?
Could you do a Wii vs PS3 and Wii vs 360 graph?
Would be interesting to see the HD Twins vs Wii charts for each region as well.
How about a Wii Fit vs PS3 chart? hehe
same old same old kowenicki, would like to see these charts in around 9 months time to see what the ps3 price cut does, and anything MS and nintendo does to countrer
