The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the US for September 2026 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the four-week period of August 30 to October 3.

The Nintendo Switch 2 came in second place, followed by the Xbox Series X|S in third place.

The total hardware unit sales fell three percent compared to a year ago. The PlayStation 5 in terms of unit sales increased 22 percent year-on-year, while the Switch 2 fell 14 percent and the Xbox Series X|S dropped 27 percent.

The Xbox ecosystem fell to its worst September in history. The previous record was set last year.

Hardware dollar spending for the PlayStation 5 increased 43 percent year-on-year, while the Xbox Series X|S is down two percent and the Nintendo Switch fell 12 percent. Sony's dollar share of the hardware market reached its highest point in a single month since May 2025, which is the month before the Switch 2 launched.

Overall spending on video games in September decreased one percent year-on-year from $4.80 billion to $4.76 billion. Spending on video game content was down two percent from $4.27 billion to $4.18 billion, while video game hardware sales increased 12 percent from $324 million to $362 million. "US video game projected total spending across content, hardware and accessories fell 1% in September when compared to a year ago, to $4.8 billion," said Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana Piscatella. "Year-to-date spending is now 3% behind 2025’s pace, at $41.0 billion."

He added, "The PS5 Limited Edition DualSense Wireless Controller Wolverine Battle Yellow gamepad was September’s best-selling accessory in both units and dollars."

There were eight new releases in the top 10 best-sellers list with Marvel's Wolverine debuting in first place for the month of September. It is the 11th best-selling game of 2026 year to date.

"Marvel's Wolverine generated the highest launch month full game dollar sales for a Sony published title since the February 2024 debut of Helldivers II," said Piscatella.

He added, "NBA 2K27 surpassed Resident Evil: Requiem to become the best-selling game of 2026 year-to-date. NBA 2K27 ranked 2nd overall in September behind only Marvel's Wolverine."

It would be insane to expect anyone to turn things in less than a year.

Well she certainly knows how to fire people and close studios in less than a year.

Sure bud. Like Pee Wee Heman Hulst is doing such a bang up job. Playstation has had more failures this gen than any other generation.

Forced hate couldn't stop Wolverine in the metric that matters most. Nice.

This is amazing for the PS5, I didn't think it would have such a good result. The PS5 must be having a great holiday.

When will people learn that hating on Playstation to this extreme only gives it free advertising.

Funny how Sony relies on IP that's not theirs to be successful. Shows the company as a whole is a failure.

Dude, with all due respect.
We talking Vídeo Games, shill a bit. No need for this much hate.

Strong results for PS5 despite supposed boycott and mixed reception to Wolverine. Online sentiment does not reflect real life.

Wolverine is garbage bro. High sells doesn't mean the game is good. Just slap a title on it and people will buy it lol.

"Circana includes the dates for the four-week period of August 30 to October 3." Typo, they are 5 weeks.

Slow month with a niche game like Fire Emblem FW outselling so many titles for the month reporting. If Amazon is any indication FW and Wolverine have dropped off significantly from their release month.

Surprised to see Switch 2 holding up so well with the price hike. I guess NA consumers are just significantly more price insensitive than the JP.

Matt touched in this in his thread. Because of the Mario Kart World Bundle ($499) that went on for a quite a while that nearly everyone opted for, when Switch 2 transitioned to $499 (no bundle), it was almost like there wasn't a price increase, just less value for the same price.

Seems like Wolverine did sell really good, i'd like it if Sony could give us some official figures tho

Concrete figures would be nice, although we will hear about it in the next financial report. I suspect it done well but below internal expectations.

Yotei done 3.3 in 1month globally, Wolverine outperformed it in the US but we did get UK figures that the physical launch week sales were just below Yotei. Without there being a drastic change in year on year digital ratio, I suspect Wolverine globally has sold a little bit over Yotei's 3.3m. Maybe 3.5-4m in its first month, but we'll have to wait and see.

FF16, GOW & Spiderman all sold over 3m in their first week. Really puts into context how frontloaded FF16 was, Wolverine will definitely have healthier legs but how healthy is a big question

Matt Piscatella also said that Wolverine is the 11th best selling title of the year (in US of course). Not sure how far behind Pokémon Pokopia it is, and I know that doesn't help figure out unit sales, but just thought I would throw that tidbit out there ;) My guess is you are right, and it's probably pretty close to Ghost of Yōtei's first month sales.

Worth noting that Pokopia's charting is based of physical only, so closest total sales comparison is Lego Batman which is multiplat

Circana estimate all digital sales now

Ah, okay! Those * games will be less accurate in their sales then
