Final Fantasy VII Revelation to Let Players Automatically Raise Characters Levels to Skip Grinding

Final Fantasy VII Revelation to Let Players Automatically Raise Characters Levels to Skip Grinding - News

Final Fantasy VII Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi in an interview with IGN Japan (and translated by Genki on social media) revealed the game will let players skip grinding and automatically level up characters.

This is an available option for players that only want to play the main story and want to skip the side content. In the previous entry, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, players that wanted to focus on the main story would end up under leveled if they skipped side content and did not grind.

Hamaguchi says at specific points in the game a question will pop up asking "Do you want to automatically raise the level to the recommended level?" This is only an optional feature.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch for the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store on April 8, 2027.

I wait for the option to skip the games to see the end screens.

I mean it's not elegant but it is true that open-world games have a problem in this area. It's mostly the other way around though (game getting too easy if you do all the side content)

Yeah. While I enjoyed Remake Part II, it did fall into a lot of the same design traps other open worlds do, giving players a bunch of checklist objectives scattered around the world that do nothing to advance the narrative and are there to just fill space and pad out time spent playing. Sidequests should be deliberate and well-structured, meaty in content, do something unique, hopefully add to the story in some fashion, and maybe even give you a worthwhile award of some kind. They shouldn't just be stuff like "Go here and kill monster/climb tower/take picture/etc." Make exploring the world something organic and spontaneous, not simply traveling to various icons on the map to tick off bits of busy work, especially if it feeds into a leveling system of some kind. Sadly, most open world games go for the "checklist objectives" setup because it's easier for the devs.

Games should be playable from beginning to end with only the main story content. As a kid I ALWAYS did the side stuff but with less time in my 30s I would appreciate not being forced to doing a bunch of side missions that don't progress the narrative. ONLY if they don't progress the narrative.

That way if I finish the story but don't want to leave the world yet I still have stuff to do, but if I'm done then I'm done.

This defeats the purpose of an RPG.

I never felt I had to grind for levels, they just happen while you go about doing stuff. And leveling materia feels more important anyways. But maybe if you just beeline from main objective to main objective, you might fall behind of the curve.

Never bad to have more options.

Wow....that sounds...really awful. So there's basically a "don't play the game" option lol.

Well I guess it's sort of like a cheat code but just an option instead of having to figure out how to get the cheat code.

Which makes me think...are cheat codes even a thing anymore? I haven't heard of a game having cheat codes in ages. I think last time I used cheat codes was in Turok on N64, which while it was cool to get all the most powerful weapons in the game and skip to whatever level and stuff, it also kinda ruined the game when you take away the whole progression of a game, and that's basically what this is doing in FFVII Rev.

I recall that plenty of 6th generation games still had cheat codes. I suppose it was the rise of achievements that mostly ruined them.

This should really be behind an explicit toggle, like a difficulty mode or something you have to dig from the menus. For most cases, the game shouldn't ask for something like this ever. I can appreciate the option existing, but I don't think games should ever tempt you like this.
