VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

PS5 got crushed by Switch 2. It's as if announcing the death of physical games on PlayStation hurt PlayStation sales.

The fact that Sony seemed to have given up on Japan for....not sure how long, but long enough that you have to ask what they were thinking before trying to compete there again

They weren't thinking at all, just like they weren't thinking when deciding to kill physical games on PlayStation in 2028.

PS5 sales are up after the announcement. Switch sales are down due to the price increase. Clearly PS5 sales were not hurt by the announcement. What data point are you referring too?

Not only are PS5 sales up YoY in Japan but this weeks RoW sales plus Japan has PS5 number 1 in sales with those regions combined, PS5 is a head with those by 20k.

They also got crushed by Switch 1, though. The PS5's sales in Japan overall have been nothing for Sony to be proud of, and why they're not prioritizing Japan. They know that Nintendo has a lock on the market. Nintendo has cultural resonance in Japan that Playstation simply doesn't.

Japanese always rejected the Xbox brand since OG Xbox. But other parts of Asia don't reject Xbox, most Xbox sold on Japan bought by Asian importers/distributors on other countries e.g. South East Asia, China. I estimate about 60% lifetime Xbox Series sold in Japan are bought by Asian regions distributors. I know this because Xbox I bought is from Amazon Japan by the retailers where I bought Xbox (I'm from SEA). Grey market imports are common on unsupported countries.

Switch 1 and 2 to be launched in Indonesia in December!

It won't push the sales that much. Switch 1 has been available in Indonesia since 2017 grey market imports from Singapore/Japan. Switch 2 also already available in Indonesia since last year. Many retailers here import from other countries. People who are interested already own them

Yes

It's a huge leap to assume that grey market availability means everyone who will ever want a console already has one. Unofficial imports come with inflated prices, zero official warranty, and no localized marketing, meaning they only reach hardcore hobbyists willing to jump through hoops. You say people who are interested already own them but an official launch brings proper retail support, which gives consumers a sense of security, competitive pricing, and mainstream visibility that can unlock the broader casual audience and contribute to pushing lifetime numbers past 160 million.

No we are already trained for >40 years that buying Nintendo consoles mean come with no warranty & we bought it anyway. Same thing with Xbox too for 25 years, mostly Japan/Singapore Xbox sold here. There are around >50k Xbox Series owners here & >200k NSW 1 owners. Even best seller PS5 version here is the Japan import because way cheaper than official PS5. PS has the strongest brand recognition here, I estimate around >500k sold here.

Why the numbers look low? Well majority of people here living in poverty, the average minimum wage is around ~$180/month. If you live in big cities around ~$300/month. So most of Indonesian can only afford 1 console. This is based on real data because I live here.

Please just stop with 160m nonsense, people here don't like buying old consoles on "new price", people here who choose old consoles always buy used because way cheaper & they pirate the used consoles, PS4 CFW & Switch CFW are popular here. PC game pass also seeing steady growth after going official, the localized price is affordable enough (~$4.66) for middle low income people who have laptops

That local context is fair, but treating a niche enthusiast base of two hundred thousand as total saturation misses the wider demographic scale of a massive population. Low average wages actually highlight why official retail infrastructure matters; localized pricing, official promotions, and structured installment options open up pathways for more budget-conscious consumers who cannot afford to absorb the often high upfront costs of unregulated imports. Hitting the milestone doesn't require turning every household into a luxury buyer, just unlocking the broader middle tier that standard grey market channels often fail to reach.

Actually official PS5 ended up more expensive than grey market version from Japan. There's big tax here for all products: 11% VAT. PS5 disc is sold at ~$637.86 here. While the grey market one cheaper by about $50. All Sony first party games also expensive here, Wolverine sold at 1,297,000 IDR which is $72.58. Sony never gives us regional pricing hence why nowadays I only play on Xbox, Xbox has much cheaper regional pricing here

Scoopz Rhyno_888 (on 13 August 2026)

Actually, high import duties and the standard 11 percent VAT apply to both official and gray market channels alike, meaning official distribution still provides a vital foundation for structured retail availability and consumer protections that gray imports lack. Regional pricing and localized support naturally take time to scale up properly, but laying that formal groundwork is what ultimately creates a stable environment for long term market penetration rather than relying entirely on unregulated channels.

I think you overtracked Switch 2 sales in Japan. Famitsu recorded >6.13m units sold as of August 2026. Total units shipped = >6.7m (91.5% sell-through)
