by William D'Angelo , posted on 12 February 2026 / 9,234 Views

Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Santa Monica Studio have announced remakes of the original God of War trilogy is currently in early development.

"We’re thrilled to confirm that the original God of War trilogy is being remade – and what better way to announce it than with the legendary TC Carson who brought Kratos to life in the Greek saga!" reads the PlayStation Blog post on the announcement.

"This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one!"

For real, why talk if you don't have anything to show.
Low point, announcing things too early is just wrong, imho.

Think about what kind of reaction people would be having now if they only announced the smaller Sons of Sparta game yesterday to close the 20th anniversary celebrations.
They were very clever to announce the Remake now, even as I agree games should be announced within 1 year or so away from release and not this yearly, usually.

You have a very good point, as always.
Still, this kind of "empty announcement"... It just feels wrong.

Anyway, I'm hyped for GoW remake. I wonder if they are going to just revisit "classic GoW" or if they are going to make classic GoW play like GoW 2018.

I would fucking love to play the Og trilogy with GoW 2018 gameplay. Would also be amazing to expand the story, make Kratos even more ruthless and brutal, perhaps add some characters and storytelling.

Not a fan of the negativity, but I also agree whole-heartedly. From what I've heard, the game is still early in development. I'm not interested in another Metroid Prime 4, Silksong, FFVII Remake, Persona 6, etc., reveal-to-release cycle of tapping my foot in anticipation of news.

(Meanwhile, DKBananza and MKWorld were revealed within two-to-four months of release.)

The Wolverine game was first announced in 2021 ... it's still not released.
This remake is not happening this decade, for sure. Also, knowing Sony, I bet they're gonna split it in three separate parts with different release dates.

I would have prefered a HD Remaster since we know how disastrous remakes are, those last few years...
I hope it's still gonna be a Hack & Slash with hyper nervous gameplay & insane HD visuals, but I'm afraid it's gonna be the same crap than the last 2 parodies released in 2018 and 2022... Geez, I hope I'm wrong!
GOW 2 is in my top 5 of all times and GOW 1 is in my top 10... Don't butcher them, please!

There's no chance they are using the gameplay of Norse GoW when they are doing all 3 games at once. It would have to be like crash and pyro trilogies. a visual remake with the gameplay intact.

UnderwaterFunktown Trentonater (on 13 February 2026)

Crash and Spyro are remasters though since they use the original code base. As for Kanemaru's sentiment that remakes have been disastrous lately I have to disagree, at worst there have been a handful of very unnecessary ones, but also some that were fantastic.

They do not use the original codebase. very noticably in fact because the new hitboxes and collision boxes caused some levels to become significantly harder. as well as the physics being based onc rash 3 but being used for all 3 which is a significant change for the first 2 but a development shortcut. and basically none of the glitches from spyro carried over to the remake which instead hade their own entirely new ones. This is in contrast to say metroid prime remastered which has all the same patched out speedrun tech as the metroid prime trilogy version.

Ah yeah I misremembered after checking the wikipedia pages, though they went to a lot of effort to try to emulate and pass them off as remasters. Both are even reffered to as such on their steam pages, but yeah they're actually not.

Nah, I think it will be similar to the gameplay from the new God of War games and will include the RPG elements found in those games. The critical acclaim and the sales figures from those God of War games is just too popular to ignore.

If they were going to stick with the style of the original God of War games they would have just done a remaster and they could released it in about two years since not much would change.

This has probably in development since GoW Ragnarok which was about four years ago, so thats a long time to be working on it.

I would have thought though they would do a remake of the other God of War games that sit inbetween those three, Chains of Olympus (which I loved), Ghost of Sparta and Ascension, because theres various gaps in the overall saga without those games.

Trentonater A203D (on 13 February 2026)

Explicitly this project is in the early stages and would have only started recently. But completely upending the gameplay for a remake of an entire trilogy essentially means making 3 entirely new games at once. that just isn't viable.

Not sure. They have brought back the original Kratos which tells me they are redoing the voice work, they won't reuse the same voice tracks as before with updated graphics.

If you think about the six mainline God of War games, including Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta and Ascension, all six games can be completed in about 10 to 15 hours each. Thats not enormous. The new God of War games take about 50 hours each, thats without completing everything.

Then you have to think that if they are doing these game's as one remake project they will reuse the assets from one game to another. The same voice actors, same motion capture actors, same animations. I personally think they are going for a similar thing as the newer God of War games.

Which disastrous remakes exactly? Metal gear 3? Silent Hill 2? Resident Evil 4? Dead Space?

I genuinely don’t get toxic “fans” like you. Prefer the Greek‑era games all you want, but calling the Norse entries “the same crap as those two parodies from 2018 and 2022” is just embarrassing. Both scored 94 on Metacritic, both swept awards, both sold over 20 million, and both are loved by millions.

You don’t have to like them, but this weird compulsion to trash them is childish. And let’s be real: without the Norse reboot, the series would’ve flatlined after Ascension. Maybe try appreciating that instead of acting like this.

Don't tell people how they got to feel about games, okay?
You don't like me hating those 2 games? Not my problem. Shouldn't be yours neither...

Suspect this won’t release until around 2030, so there’s really no point in announcing it now.
As it would be year until the devs could really show anything it can make it look like its vapourware or in development hell.

BraLoD (on 13 February 2026)

This can be one of the best games ever.

Please make all 3 of them be playable in sequence carrying over the weapons and skills until the Colossus of Rhodes and Hades, make it one big continous game and it won't even matter it is a remake, it'll be my priority over mostly any new game releasing that year.

I know there are other games between 1 and 2, but that doesn't matter, make it a massive game and not only a collection of 3 remakes (it can also be divided into the 3 games to be played separatedly if you want Sony, but make my wish an option at least).

The graphics look incredible. This complete reimagining of these classics certainly ups the ante and puts pressure on Nintendo to show anything of equivalent depth and detail.

Since this project is in very early development, I wonder if that means the other project SM was working on after the release of GOW Ragna is cancelled. Doesn't really make sense to announce your new project over one that has heen in development for over 3 years.

  • +1
BraLoD Qwark (on 13 February 2026)

They announced it because of the 20th Anniversary, people would heavily criticize and mock Sony if they would announced the small Sons of Sparta yesterday.
Even as I agree it should have been announced when it had footage to cover a trailer at least, but it was very smart to do it now.

This'll probably just be a fresh coat of paint which I think is fine, really. Kind of a boring announcement. The games are already playable. Maybe they touch up the narrative a bit to bridge the games. Maybe they remove the bit where you use womens corpses as puzzle pieces, which I'm sure will piss off some of the worst people.

Sure. I guess it's been long enough, though. Fuck it. Kind of a waste of time though, I think.

If they remove the button mashing as an accessibility option, I can finally play these games. I tried the first one and couldn't get past the first boss.

I'd love to see the trailer for the game Santa Monica has been working on since 2022. Even though I don't think God of War 3 needs a remake, the trilogy is great news for me.

The new game directed by Cory should premier as the TGA "one last game" for this year.

Any word on if this will come to PC or will be PS5/6 exclusive?

  • 0
Qwark h2ohno (on 13 February 2026)

By the time it will release PlayStation has probably catched up with Microsoft and will be a defacto third party publisher with its own plastic box.

  • +2
Blood_Tears h2ohno (on 13 February 2026)

It will likely be cross-gen with PS5/6 and a PC release a year or two later like the current single player policy.

MS laid out the blueprint on how to destroy the sales of your own plastic box which is why Sony has regular console discounts to build their install base and still keeps their AAA single player games exclusive for a period of time before a PC release once sales have initially saturated for which ever game. Not too mention Sony doesn't release their AAA single player games day 1 on a competing console in order for that game to survive financially. So anyone that says different is usually just hating. This gen is the evidence of that.
