The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Total Lead: 2,393,866 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 4,418,136

Switch 1 Total Sales: 2,024,270

January 2026 is the 8th month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.08 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 2.39 million units.

The 8th month for the Switch 2 is January 2026, while for the Switch 1 it is October 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 4.42 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 2.02 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 36.58 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 32.16 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

I think it’s fun to imagine if Nintendo had sold their products at every price— What if NS2 was literally just free? Like Fortnite or smth. Just fill the system with micro-transactions and boom, costs covered.

I think that would be more likely to happen if Sony pulled a Sega Saturn with the PS6 but with the price tag of $0 with Fortnite 2 as a pack-in.

8 month mark for Switch 2 being level with 15 month mark for Switch in Japan is wild.
