By the end of the year, PS5 should've passed the lifetime sales of the Wii.
PS5 should be able to sell about 14-15 million units this calendar year, which would put it ahead of the lifetime sales of Wii.
The Wii was a sales beast.
Especially considering Nintendo's traditional time limit of old 4 to 5 year generational paradigm where they'd more or less kill the console at the end to make way for the next. IMO, a bad strategy on Nintendo's part as it was disruptive to customers and their own continuous sales power. So far, NES â†' SNES, GBA â†' DS, and Switch â†' Switch 2 remain their best transitions from a commercial standpoint. The one thing they all have in common is Nintendo continued to push these systems until and after the generational transition; add that Nintendo supported Switch and NES well beyond the 5 year generation limit. You could make an argument for 3DS â†' Switch (probably not Wii U â†' Switch because Wii U was commercially irrelevant by this point, while 3DS was still in the ~5 million range).
Note: while it's true SNES sold fewer in total than NES, it sold almost as many in half the time, it was how Nintendo ended the SNES generation that resulted in the failure to surpass the NES, rather how it transitioned from NES to SNES).
