Switch 2 vs PS5 Sales Comparison - December 2025 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 05 February 2026 / 10,645 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. PS5 Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 2,740,536 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 6,624,145 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 15,585,319

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 8,961,174

December 2025 is the 7th month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the PlayStation 5 by 2.74 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is ahead of the PS5 by 6.62 million units.

The 7th month for the Switch 2 is December 2025, while for the PS5 it is May 2021. The Switch 2 has sold 15.59 million units, while the PS5 sold 8.96 million units during the same timeframe.

The PlayStation 5 sold 89.44 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 73.85 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS5.

Switch 2 after 7 months already close to the PS5 after 14, crazy how well it launched.

and yet people are dooming it all over

It should be noted that the PS5 was affected by the consequences of the lockdown and the global shortage of 2020 and 2021, making it very difficult to purchase at that time, unlike the Switch 2, which has experienced no stock shortages. It was only in 2022, when the PS5 finally became available everywhere, that sales really started to pick up.

Yeah, I was just looking closely for that 23 month mark where they were finally able to stockpile for the holidays.

Switch 2 might still have its challenges, but I felt PS5 lost some early momentum. There was a lot of PS5 talk, but a lot of it was about people trying for months to get a PS5 rather than playing PS5. There was some hype because of the shortage that drove demand up in some respects, but it remained a longer term shortage as they could not meet that demand from people who already wanted a PS5.

Switch 2 may have unforeseen challenges, but I see it balancing out somewhere around that 39 month mark where the contest can be more clearly understood.

Here’s to another three years of vgchartz.

How does this well known history change the reality of the comparative sales figures? Its interesting context but it doesnt then allow for the sales difference to be discounted. The impact of the lockdown was unfortunate for PS5 but that's life.

I've always wondered if the demand for the PS5 was higher than normal due to the lockdown (an argument always brougth up when talking of the NS1). My guess is it was, but not as much.

A loud minority who (at least IMO) are trying to justify their high-horse position is “Switch 2 is too expensive for the market; people are foolish to pay for unchecked greed” by interpreting reality as something other than the fact that Switch 2 is shattering records.

The comparison is meaningless though, as the PS5 sold number is just the production number. It is in no way representative of actual demand.

I think "meaningless" is a stretch but its definitely a relevant point

Long term sales are really determined by ongoing 1st and 3rd party support so we'll just have to see how the sales comparison evolves overtime

Switch 2’s record shattering sales are even more impressive considering that the PS5’s 14-15 months include two holiday seasons during the Coronavirus period, often argued to have inflated demand for consoles.

this will be a fun race! Ps5 has GTA6 coming and switch2 has several heavy hitters coming, mario, zelda, smash brothers, more pokemon.................................

I think the first 2 years are going to be painful, Sony didn't fix PS5 pandemic shortage until 2022

Mind you aside from Mario Kart World there is no like heavy hitter exclusive to Switch 2 yet and it's able to sell massively just because of how strong the Switch brand is. They have 128 million active users on Switch still, that's crazy for a console almost 10 years old.
