The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Less than 1 million lead for the DS now.
December will effectively cut that lead in half, more or less.
And the Switch 1 still has some steam left in it.

They are tracking so close in the end. Also, notice how the slope has flattened for both. I feel like most likely the Switch will get there. You just gotta wait it out. its gonna take a long time. Maybe even till 2028.

NS1 has already shipped more units than DS, so it’s a done deal at this point. Wouldn’t anticipate sales needing too long to catch up… Switch should be ahead launch aligned in the next few months, and ahead of LTD easily before the end of CY2026. Only 1.5-1.6mil left, and Switch will likely pull 400-700k in December alone.
