Yikes. Half its lead - Gone. Just like that.
Not a good sign.
PS5 needs GTA VI sooner than later.

This month has really bad for every gaming system in the US, not only the PS5.
It sold like crazy in the EU, in the other hand.

Something tells me Europe will have to do A LOT of heavy lifting from this point forward to help the PS5 catch and surpass the PS4.

It should. After all it has another 15M of a gap between PS4 and PS5 there. US will do a few more millions and rest of the world will do a few more too. It should get there. GTA 6 will help also.

Maybe not, PS5 can last longer than the PS4, and that alone would make it very plausible to oversell the PS4. PS4 had no legs as soon as the pandemic took over and Sony was struggling to barely even meet the PS5 demand with the silicon crisis, so if the PS5 last one year longer than the PS4 it can easily overtake it, if it have not done so time-aligned.

it's still down year on year in europe though.

That's expected, it's 5 years old now, it's natural it starts to sell less.

correct but saying it's selling like crazy when it's still down year over year in its strongest market seems a bit of a dishonest statement.

What's dishonest? It sold like crazy during November there, by this site estimates it pretty much matched last year November sales, which was by far the all time sales record for the month? It potentially either became the 1st or 2st best November ever, how is that not selling like crazy?

Why does anyone assume people are waiting for GTA to buy a PS5?

Its much more likely that nearly all GTA players already have a PS5 or Xbox... or intend to wait for the PC version

Given the huge sales of GTA5 and the fact it exists as somewhat of a live service game, it's likely there is notable portion of gamers who will feel pushed to upgrade to play it who haven't yet.

Its entirely reasonable large swaths of gamers still haven't felt the need to get new systems or update their laptops if all they play is GTA, Fortnite and the likes of Warzone.

We will quite obviously see a jump in hardware sales once the game launches, it's just a case of how big and for how long will that lift impact it's baseline.

Still seems odd to me that the PS5 did so well. Feels like the PS4 was way better software wise, but that could be because I'm just so out of touch.
