by William D'Angelo , posted on 09 December 2025 / 2,139 ViewsActivision following feedback has announced they will no longer be doing back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games as they admit "the franchise has not met your expectations fully."
The goal is to provide a more unique experience every year and to drive innovation in a more meaningful way rather than with incremental changes.
"We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games," reads a message from the Call of Duty team. "The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.

"We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental. While we aren’t sharing those plans today, we look forward to doing so when the time is right."
Activision is also giving players the opportunity to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 multiplayer and Zombies for free next week along with a Double XP weekend.
Feedback from players will also help shape the seasonal updates over the coming months. The goal from the team is to have Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 earn its place as one of the best entries in the Black Ops sub-series among players.
Activision concluded, "To be clear, the future of Call of Duty is very strong and we believe our best days are ahead of us given the depth and talent of our development teams. We have been building the next era of Call of Duty, and it will deliver precisely on what you want along with some surprises that push the Franchise and the genre forward. We look forward to welcoming you in, listening to you, and moving forward together."

Good. Build back up Sledgehammer after you laid off 30% of their devs in 2024, and get the 3 game, 3 year rotation going again, Modern Warfare, Black Ops, and the 3rd being new trial standalone games like Sledgehammer was doing before, until you find something popular enough to make a 3rd sub-series, preferably a historic CoD for the 3rd since Modern Warfare and Black Ops are mostly modern or near future now.
Or, if you're scared to do new sub series games due to the financial risk associated with trying new things, then get rid of yearly CoD releases and put a gap year between Black Ops and MW releases, with a 4 year development cycle per game instead of 3 year.
WWI CoD game? I doubt they would go back further than that.
That would be cool to see. Korean War would be cool too, I don't think I've ever seen any game set during the Korean War, WW1 at least got a Battlefield game, but Korean War has basically nothing.
If they can get the MASH 4077 unit as special guest characters - I might actually buy that game!
wont happen but that is a fun idea!
Not a lot of them left. I think they're down to Alda, Farr, Farrell, and Burghoff.
It doesn't have to be them - They're all probably too old to do it anyway, even if its VA work.
It can be a fresh cast. As long as they capture the essence of Hawkeye, Klinger, BJ, Radar, and the rest of the crew, that's what counts!
A CoD game set during the Revolution would be... interesting. Imagine all the controller motions you would have to do to pack the powder, wadding, and shot into your smoothbore musket.
Ghosts 2?
Ended on an unresolved cliffhanger
Well at least the decision has nothing to do with money
