The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

The PS5 was ahead of the PS4 by 535k in June 2023, now it's 827k behind the PS4. So in 2 years 5 months the PS5 lost 1.3 million sales to the PS4. With the new CEO of PS wanting to be more competitive in Japan I hope he can turn the decline around with the PS6 since I just don't see the PS5 catching the PS4.

I don't like PS failing so hard. I love competition, makes companies try harder to attract customers, and this exactly what Sony is doing, more marketing and cheaper consoles models. I hope I'll be able to see a new Sony handle next generation.

Part of this is less exclusives on PlayStation and the growing westernization of PlayStation which has been ongoing since PS4 in particular.

I think it's...

  1. Japanese companies being more Western focused.
  2. PlayStation's lack of commitment to Japan.
  3. Nintendo becoming the default console and the Switch 2 now getting the big Japanese games.
  4. PC gaming growing a lot.
