The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

This is the impact of Nintendo going strong with the Switch 1 into the release of its successor the Switch 2… you know, rather than ramping stuff down two years before the successor: shutting down services, cutting advertisement channels and campaigns/media funnels, and overall software releases.

In other words. I think it finally got through to them that they only look as good as their current console. If that’s in decline, then it looks like Nintendo’s in decline; and if their console doesn’t have a red hot feature and a killer app, then they’re not going to recapture the fans they shed (“Nope, I got bored and I got a PS instead”). I’d speculate that they figured they could get away with it before because of the old adage that “absence makes the heart grow fond” along with “they’ll be paying attention on the successor instead of the old one”. Anyway, lesson learned by them it seems. I think the 3DS was part of the market research on what they were going to do with the Switch 1.

And since they went this route, “Nintendo shattering records with Switch 2” reads like an understatement.
