by William D'Angelo , posted on 17 September 2025 / 8,029 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS3 Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 88,059 - PS5

Gap change over last 12 months: 4,186,860 - PS5

Total Lead: 25,402,535 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 78,220,915

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 52,818,380

July 2025 is the 57th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 by 88,059 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 4.19 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 25.40 million units.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 83 when it had sold 78.69 million units.

The PlayStation 3 crossed 60 million in month 62, 70 million in month 73, and 80 million in month 85. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 9.18 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

Someone said to me in an old article that the PS5 won't grow that 25M lead. It seems it did. I also think it will grow it a little bit more this holiday season, and especially more next year (since GTA VI is coming and on top of that PS3 enters it's 2012 year which was a decent drop, close to 3M from it's 2011, that PS5 is outpacing here). The things are moving exactly inline for a gap of around 30M when it's all said and done (of course if PS5 doesn't surprise us with better legs than PS3 and PS4).

I still fully anticipate PS3 to beat PS5. Sony will announce PS6 for GTAVI’s launch, and then immediately stop all PS5 production once LTD hits exactly 100 units under PS3’s LTD. They’ll then use the marketing of being the “industry underdog,” coming out of their weakest generation, in hopes of PS6 being like Switch.

GTA VI will be Nintendo Switch exclusive, giving the console the push it needs to reach that 170M dream!

If the PS5 has very good sales this holiday season, it could surpass the PS3 by the end of the year, everything will depend on whether Sony makes some discounts. We have Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 7, which could help the PS5 a lot.
