The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS3 Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 50,018 - PS5

Gap change over last 12 months: 4,437,274 - PS5

Total Lead: 25,160,476 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 77,279,193

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 52,118,717

June 2025 is the 56th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 by 50,018 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 4.44 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 25.16 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 77.28 million units in 56 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 52.12 million units. Month 56 for the PlayStation 5 is June 2025 and for the PlayStation 3 is June 2011.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 81 when it had sold 77.49 million units.

The PlayStation 3 crossed 60 million in month 62, 70 million in month 73, and 80 million in month 85. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 10.12 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

Looks like someone used a limiter at 25 millions :D

That limiter will be broken in the holidays, and most specially next year with the GTA 6 launch.

The current gap of 25 millions would result in 112.4 millions lifetime sales of PS5. This would be my guess as well. PS5 is currently 3.1 millions behind PS4, which would also lead to a similar range of 114.1M units. In both cases (PS5 vs. PS3 and PS5 vs. PS4) I don't expect the gap to increase in favor of PS5 (because of high prices and the success of Switch 2).

The gap will continue to increase during this year yes cuz PS4 is at 18M in 2018. However starting from next year PS5 should start closing the gap, because of GTA 6 and because PS4 did just 14M in 2019. Then only 8M in 2020, and by 2021 it did just 2.5M, which PS5 should surpass. Of course I don't expect much higher numbers than those of PS4, but still somewhat higher to close the gap, and finishing somewhere close to PS4, 1-2M ahead or behind. But still ending more than 25M of the PS3.
