The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in the US and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 US:

Gap change in latest month: 716,235 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 716,235 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 1,624,673

Switch 1 Total Sales: 908,438

June 2025 is the 1st month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.72 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 0.72 million units.

The 1st month for the Switch 2 is June 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is March 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 1.62 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 0.91 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 48.12 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 46.50 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

Switch 2 will ride the hype of the Switch 1 early on but it will be crucial to get some lead before the pandemic boom.

I don’t think it’s riding the hype of Switch 1, it’s that the concept in general is appealing and games like Mario Kart World & Donkey Kong Bananza are legit system sellers.

It is of course riding the hype of the Switch like how do you think this is the fastest selling console of all time rn while the Switch had the same concept and stronger line up but still sold less. They still managed to have a great launch package for Switch 2, but Switch 1 is a factor.

I guess “riding the hype” to me comes off like it’s not doing well based on its own merits so maybe I’m just misusing that phrase.
