Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - January 2025 - Sales

by William D'Angelo , posted on 04 March 2025 / 9,792 Views

The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 374,373 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,016,777 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,390,267 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 149,190,137

DS Total Sales: 151,580,404

January 2025 is the 95th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.37 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 7.02 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.39 million units.

The 94th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is January 2025, while for the DS it is September 2012. The Switch has sold 149.19 million units, while the DS sold 151.58 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 4.83 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

It is! It had the best FY6 of any system! Not even beasts like the PS2, GameBoy or the DS had a better one!

No. Because we do not have reliable figures for the PS2. vgchartz stared tracking consoles and handhelds in late 2005 if i am not mistaken. The PS2 released in march 4 2000 in japan. It was well past its peak when vgchartz started tracking. Reliable weekly figures are availible since the DS. With PSP and the Xbox 360 the weekly sales... anyway back zo topic, the DS gets smoked sometime in summer this year!

Maybe then you could add a line for the PS2 sales in this chart similar to the one for the Gameboy sales?

Switch's line touched DS's. Last time this happend was around month 49~50. The DS now can feel Switch's breath on the back of its neck!

The DS is as good as smoked! It does not matter if it outsells it in the US/ Americas (In Americas the DS should be ~60 million and in the US ~57 million if i am not mistaken?!). In europe the Switch should trash the Gameboy, but it'll be lucky if they barly beat the PS4. In ROTW the PS4 is as good as smoked. 157 million is the WW floor as for now!
