this year wiill be fun, you guys get it?, "wiill"
Wii was an absolute beast.
The berserker.
Only Switch and DS were able to exceed its sales velocity.
In April 2020(the start of Lockdowns) the Switch was still 9.5m behind the Wii. I doubt the DS sold at a faster velocity as well. The Wii is the fastest selling console ever I’m pretty sure.
What I meant by that is that the Wii sold 26 million units in a single year, Switch sold 29 million, and DS topped the 30 million mark two years in a row. No other console has hit those heights.
It’s true, when taking the first 4-5 years, Wii still wins. The DS had a decent start, but the DS fat wasn’t as appealing as the DS Lite.
The Wii could have done even better given all the issues surrounding it: mainly massive supply constraints (from 2006 to spring 2009, and then again from late summer 2009 to winter 2010). The second part was Nintendo’s fault, they began shifting to Wii U development probably around 2009, as 2010 really felt like a winding down period following Spring 2010 (about when Monster Hunter 3 came out), slower updates on the channels and the release schedule became less interesting going forward ( Xenoblade being the exception). But it was 2011 when they slammed the brakes: shutting down services, marketing, ending stuff like Nintendo Week, and unveiling the Wii U sealed it - but even in this winding down period to the end, the Wii still sold another 30 million hardware units and 450 million software units, more than double what the Wii U did the entire generation.
Could see PS5 being within 10m of Wii's lifetime sales by the end of this year, assuming GTA VI actually releases this year. PS5 should easily surpass Wii's lifetime sales in 2026.
Next year the PS5 should pass the Wii LTD!
