The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 2,552,995 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,293,311 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,600,640 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 148,790,269

DS Total Sales: 151,390,909

December 2024 is the 94th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 2.55 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 7.29 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.60 million units.

Wooow... look at that... what a comeback, man! Not even Rocky Balboa. From the biggest distance, just a year and 3 months ago, to the last push to proclaim victory. Switch already shipped 151 Million for SURE by now, knowing the official numbers of Nintendo for Switch being 150.86 until 31st december, and just adding the japanese sells numbers since the start of this 2025. Less than 3 million for sure.

We will need probably 2 or 3 more "sales comparisons" to make it official, but...

Its over! Its litterally impossible to NOT outsell the DS now! Only Apophis and Bennu could prevent this! Its not a question IF but WHEN now. Depending on the Switch 2's launch date Switch could outship the DS even before its launch!

It is almost touching the DS's line, which is something that happened the last time in month 49!

I think the Switch is definitely winning this one considering its current momentum. Congrats Nintendo! I think the Switch will overtake the Nintendo DS launch aligned during June - September this year and will overtake the lifetime sales during holiday 2025 (probably October - November).

I think Switch will overtake DS lifetime sales by August/September

The DS is really incredible considering it was replaced after 6 years. Still Nintendo's biggest success in my book even after the Switch overtakes it.

In terms of profit generated the Switch was reported last year to have generated more profit for Nintendo than the previous 16yrs combined. So that includes DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. Switch is hands down Nintendos greatest success in terms of profit.

DS didn't have digital retail games or online subscriptions. Those two things made Switch a bigger financial success than DS.
